Yes, the current trio of Cundy, Klose & Atkinson haven't been pretty at times; and the days of a Websteresque great footballing CB may be behind us somewhat. But the last 4 performances in particular have shown a willingness to compete at a level of physicality  that I think NP will have been impressed by. He loves Baker of course, but we all know where that story is probably heading.

So it's a goodbye to players like Vyner, Moore & probably in a way Kalas who NP probably thinks are part of the passive malaise. Towler will hopefully have impressed his physicality during his injury break, so it maybe a fresh start for him in pre season friendlies. Let's see how he gets on, and hopefully banishes the memories of that Millwall game.

Kalas is a wonderful defender on his day, and certainly a top defender in the championship. But as a unit, he's quiet, doesn't take control (You only have to look at the difference Klose has made in that regard in the last few months); and sometimes seems to be trying too hard to cover for the deficiencies of others. That has had an effect on his own performances of course.

He's on huge wages, we can't afford them really; and neither can we afford to let him leave for nothing next summer. I've no doubt the operation he has had to "clear up" problems he has had for a few years, is in preparation for future medicals elsewhere.

Interesting where we go with the keeper situation (both OOC summer 23, but MOL has an option year of course). Plus JD entering his last year of contract. I've been so impressed by his return to form of late, after a really poor 18 months due to injury and form.

Good post, though my take on the Kalas situation is slightly different.

I think it is solely down to wages that we are looking to part ways.

If he was on £10k a week I think NP would keep him to compete with Klose, Atkinson & Cundy for a place, but he isn’t & so we are keen to move him on.

I know I say this a lot, but if we bring in a Bradley Orr type RB this summer our defensive options suddenly look very different.

It’s amazing what you can find in the lower leagues if you have the right people looking. Far better to get players like this who have the potential to develop rather than players at the end of their career who are only going to get worse with age

My view, he will sign a 1 + 1, where like Martin it will allow him to trigger it on appearances.

I think that will be tempting too, he apparently likes the area and the players like him as well. I think it would be a good move to get him signed up quickly, in case someone back home has seen how good his form has been here.

Like him, you mean?

Wade Elliott? Wilbraham? Or Ashley Williams?

It is the type, not their age, just like signing young players doesn’t always work out, either.

I completely agree with you.

But we have to be honest on this one - it was complete luck. Brian Tinnion wouldn't have been anywhere near Grimsby if we hadn't loaned them a player. Pure serendipity.

Much work still needed on the recruitment side going forward, although the fans scouting group is obviously a step in the right direction.

What I like about him particularly is that he has been knocked back at various times in his career but has kept going and is starting to get some reward for his persistence.

That suggests a good character, something Nigel sets a lot of store by. If he keeps working hard we could have a very good player on our hands.

I daresay many of us have not seen him play but Nige obviously sees some potential in him. Let’s hope he develops into a classy defender for us.

That's probably as close a compliment Towler will get. He's back playing for the U23s so I expect him to finish the U23 season strongly and then be in or around the 1st feam next season

Credit to him, showed some good things at Derby and NP clearly thinks he has something.

I don't really look much at the U23 stuff but it was notable thinking about it today that 5, 6 of the starters had minutes this season- and that doesn't even include 'established' players (yes I know a number of them were signed from other clubs) under 23 such as Massengo, Scott, Semenyo and since his bout of Covid and subsequent lag on form passed, Atkinson- it's really positive to see.

Edit- Atkinson is 23 so got that last one slightly wrong.
