Ah, Somerford........Beirut with ice cream !

I worked on the Somerford Estate for a couple of months and in one house the tenant was running a porn DVD business - he had thousands of them and a full-on mail order operation and was quite open about it. I read a couple of years later that he`d been shot in some sort of `turf war`.

I just came onto the Semenyo thread and read the last post. Now I'm really intrigued to go back and find our how we got here from a discussion about Antoine Semenyo!

It's fine, I've been following it and I don't have a clue how it's gone there. Classic OTIB though - that's what makes it great ?

Yes, always use the ring road to navigate round there. The flats look like a soviet enclave crossed with Belfast's Divis !

A strange one (for me) Bournemouth.

Many years ago, I had a very good friend, who lived in Christchurch (Bournemouth), where we spent some fantastic weekends in lovely pubs and wine bars, and met some charming young ladies; we even went windsurfing one Spring morning in Poole Harbour (Bournemouth).

Some years later, when my friend had moved away, I had to spend a few nights in Bournemouth on business and asked my secretary to book me a decent (3/4 star) hotel, preferably quite close to the beach so I could venture out in the evening for dinner and to enjoy some of the wonderful nightlife I remembered.

What a shock.

I appreciate it was out of season, but the place was just full of beggars, drunks and druggies - I know, I should have felt at home.

There is a huge difference between the three.

Nice negative start to pre-season and preparations for the season ahead…..

not only are we now without our attacking catalyst, but due to that, we can’t move on the very expensive wells from the point of managing the clubs finances as we need cover.

Wells was never going anywhere.

Well, better chance he won’t be sold and should only miss 3 games - positive spin

Except when he gets over the injury he will have to do a pre-season on his own. So you can add a month or so to the 12 weeks.

Assuming we have got our estimate of his return right for once. How many times have we been told a player would be back in x weeks only for it to drag on? Sadly it's not an exact science. Fingers crossed.

That's a blow was hoping he would hit the ground running this season

Chance for Wells to show he wants it. Annoying for us and Antoine himself, but this is where Wells needs to show that he can still kick on and prove his worth.

Every cloud...

Wishful thinking I'm afraid, unless you know how Wells can add pace and power to his game between now and July 30.

This is shit news. And no mistake.

I’m a bit uncertain what you mean by this. If Semenyo doesn’t start training until the beginning of September, he’s unlikely to be fully match fit until the end of September. As the season starts on 30 July that’s a lot more than 3 games.

Just shows how lacking we are in squad depth when it comes to this sort of situation.
interested to see what Sykes can offer but maybe suggests we need one more wide forward to come in, especially with Benarous out until Christmas

Yea whis going to replace him?

We could go 2 up top with wienman and Martin

Or could play Wells

Or Conway

Or bell

Or Henry

I mean we really are lacking for options.........

Wells has pace and makes up for lack of power with his footballing intelligence.

At least Largish Nige has time to make new game plans with the absence of AS.

This could be a blessing in disguise if we can get Wells firing on all cylinders.

I don’t see either of those as replacements for semenyo IMO. Neither offer the same attributes or style of play. Semenyo was one of the highest pressers in the league last season which allowed us to turn over and create those counters where he had the pace, power, strength and ability to score/assist. None of the aforementioned players give us that so we would have to change style of play or simply won’t be as fruitful in attack compared to last season.

Not remotely adequate as a replacement for Semenyo. Imho.

Wells has nothing like the pace and power of Semenyo and those are the 2 qualities that make us twice the side without him. Opposition sides are scared stiff of Semenyo, not something you can say of Wells. Imho.

We have to change style depending on opponent, for example against Stoke we wouldnt be putting crosses into the box due to there big defenders

Cardiff we would use pace to expose the lack of speed at the back so on and so forth

We didn't rely on him last season and we won't this season, we are more about tram work then the individual now,

I largely agree with you but with Semenyo specifically, he has come on so much that what he brings dictates the positive way we play. Without that, my concern is that we have no one else in the team that can create that positive attacking nature that drives the team.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think we should change the way we play to suit the opposition. We need to play our way, be comfortable doing that and have players to suit the system. Constant change leads to inconsistency.

He doesn’t have to do that to be successful.

No threat in behind. Wasteful in possession. Good finisher.

Martin, Wells and Weimann have been here together long enough for someone to make them work as a combination. No-one has.

It's Semenyo that makes the forward line, the whole team, tick.

We're back to playing percentage football aimed at Chris Martin.
