Boring boring Preston?!

So we are equal on points with Preston. However so far this season they have had one 1-0 win and 4 no score draws. I know that every expert says the basis of a successful team is a strong defence but as I recall the aim of the game is actually to score goals.

Would be interested to know the fans opinion. Happy at being unbeaten yes, but also likely quite bored too.

The one goal they have scored was an absolute worldly as well, so you could argue that they haven’t created/taken real clear cut chances.

It makes the interest in Wells carry more water - if you’ve scored one in five clearly there’s a problem up top.

If I’m honest, it’d worry me. It’s more difficult to score goals than anything else in the game, and when they do start conceding (and they will) it’s how they react - do they actually have goals in them? Forward options are Parrott (not set world alight in loan spells), Evans (past best), Maguire (not prolific) and Jakubsen (1 in 4). My instinct is they don’t have a great deal of goals in them and I don’t expect them to be up the top end for that reason.

Their XG this season is 6.03 (Ave. 0.093 per shot - so taking 1 in 11 chance shots).

xG against is 6.23 (Ave. 0.118 per shot - so opponents take in 1 in 9 chance shots).

Suggest GF 1 GA 0 is about to bust the dam!

Ours is bloody lovely.

Average xG value per shot for 0.132

Average xG value per shot against 0.088

I’ll be updating once “XG Data” and Wyscout do their refresh.  You may notice in Tableau I’ve reverted to Wyscout XG values, but use XG Data’s “assist player data” OT their XG values where Wyscout haven’t counted a shot.

So in the first four games our expected goals were 4.5 and our actual goals were 6?  So either our goal scorers are world class or xG is meaningless?

It could be both, depends how you want to interpret it e.g. our strikers are doing better than our xG would usually expect but I would also say it's not meaningless it's just not definitive.

Funny you should say that. Alan McInally was reporting on Saturday`s game and couldn`t believe it finished 0-0. He reckoned it was a hell of a game.

Seen a few of their stats and they have a terrible shot to goal ratio, decent possession too- not playing Riis Jakobsen I notice which is a surprise- he's rather good iirc.

Very strange stat - scored one,  conceded none,  and have 7 points after 5 games.

Being linked tonight with a £10m move to Boro, which might explain it.

Boro of course sold Spence to Spurs & Tavernier to Bournemouth so are currently flush with cash.

Wonder if PNE would come back for Wells if they did sell? Troy Parrott hasn’t scored yet & Ched Evans is rubbish.

Boro signing Matt Clarke too, is a rumour going round today.

Yep, think Wilder has lost patience with a few after a slow start.

Strikers he’s already brought in are pretty unproven (Hoppe, Forss) so Jakobsen would address that.

Everyone screaming for Ryan Lowe a year ago too. If I was a Preston fan I’d start finding something else to do on a Saturday.

Let's see where they are at the end of the season. They are trying to get in a striker in, combined with their obviously incredible defence and I would say they have a chance of play offs
