Huddersfield sack Schofield

David Wagner's name the elephant in the room in Huddersfield Town manager hunt

The promotion-winning boss is currently out of work after being relieved of his duties by Swiss side Young Boys earlier this year and supporters are yearning for his return

The rumours inevitably started the moment his presence at the West Bromwich Albion game was announced. It was always going to happen: with David Wagner out of work, the side in poor form and sufficient time passed since his departure from Huddersfield Town in January 2019, all it needed was any hint that he still holds some affection for the club to light the touchpaper of nostalgic hope.

The suggestions that sprung up after that game that a deal had already been agreed to replace Danny Schofield with Wagner were nonsense then and remain so now, of course, but now the former has been sacked the yearning for the German-American to return is only going to intensify.

Town are being tight-lipped about their shortlist, though work to bring in a new boss is of course already under way. In many ways, though, Wagner would be the ideal option: he is very likely to be respected by the players despite only Jonathan Hogg remaining from his time in charge; he already fits in with their style of play; he has proven he can get a team to dramatically over-perform in the Championship; and he is so enormously popular with the fans that it would be a huge PR win for the club at a time when they need it most.

There are arguments to the contrary too, of course. Going back for a second spell rarely works out (though of course Town fans would point to Peter Jackson in response to that), and Wagner’s track record since leaving Town is… not terribly good, shall we say. There’s also no guarantee he would want to come back, more to the point.

They were shocking against us but have lost a lot of top players haven't they?

Really? I thought they were the best team we played at Ashton Gate. Pressed us really well and had some good opportunities. They still have Sorba Thomas but playing your best outlet out of his position doesn't bode well.
