Bristol City The Modern Era A Complete Record by David Woods

Is that the one that covers up until about 1987?

Magnificent book and was the main source of data up to that date for the Citystats website when it was created.

Shame I've lost my copy somewhere now :(

One of our close shaves maintaining our record of never having lost to a non-league side in the Cup -

That's what I thought, but......

1910/11 season City 0 - Crewe 3. City were in Div 1 whilst Crewe were in the Central League. They had been in the 2nd division until 1896 and didn't get back in the League until 1923.

3-1, went one down. Don't think vs rugby exist anymore. Also remember plating Aylesbury the year after

Aylesbury were my ‘non-league’ team back then (place of birth) pleased City got past that test but I remember going to a pre season friendly against them, maybe the summer after and City getting well beat despite a decent line up.

No, this one goes up until the Gary Johnson years. The old man had the one you mentioned. Is indeed a great book.

Keith Cooper, who I believe is Steve's dad. League had plenty of Welsh refs then, not anymore.

yep he is.

Always remember Lester Shapter from torquay!

yes, niece was in my year at school.

The groans when he was announced as the ref! Him and Alf Bushk

I thought it was Spurs when they were Southern League or something like that.

Still, we can ignore that - over 100 years ago doesn`t count for me. A century of it never happening whereas some sides don`t even go a decade!

23rd Feb 1903.  FA Cup, Spurs 1 Bristol City 0.  Spurs were indeed a Southern League team at the time.

So that’s two FA cup defeats to non league sides.

You can’t even argue that we’ve never lost an FA cup tie to a club who are currently non league, because we lost in the cup to Wrexham in 1978.

And Notts County, probably more as well

Pretty sure we lost to Gillingham at home in the late 40’s and they were non-league at the time.

Correct; 1946 - 47 City 1 - non league Gills 2.

However like Crewe they had been a league team and were working their way back becoming one again.
