Definitely a game to quickly move on from.

England have a lot of rethinking to do between now and Saturday.

They nailed it in the studio that we don't play enough teams outside of Europe to be used to that style of game, we really could do without having to play Colombia or Jamaica next for that reason

This is what football is all about, upmost respect to Chloe Kelly and Alex Greenwood

That's our get out of jail free card used today, the girls certainly dug deep but the history books will show a Lionesses victory

Now to find a bar at London Bridge to watch the game on Saturday

Utmost.

Yeah, sorry, but that’s one that bugs me.

This performance should be no surprise it was Australia again. Nigeria played tactically like Australia did who England are familiar with. Get high, overload the pivot/pivots and cut the pitch in halves, screen and press and England struggle to play through the second third.

Today the retention of the football in the second third was far below what should be expectation. Walsh and Stanway are above 70%. Russo, James, Daly gave the ball away far more than they kept it. Lucy Bronze was World player of the year and she has team mates who do not pass consistently to her. The patterns of England's possessional positional play do not exist when players are not releasing the ball. Positonal patterns can't exist when the third player is losing the ball 70% of the time. Switches do not occur to take advantage of dragging players out of position if James/Russo fail to release the ball.

England have the tools to do better, but they need to be following the principles of their football. Today was a mixture players  playing well to expectation and the carrying team mates whose performances fell well below what the teams approach requires.

The team collectively wont play that badly again.

Huh?

I'm guessing this is a whoosh moment for me

Yes.

The Matilda's (Aussie Ladies world cup squad) do calendars.

Very nice too they are.

Your a man who does pubs and pub chat.

In 80's pub chat the Matilda's calendars are like Whitbread trophy .. Guaranteed to give you a creamy head.

Two teams set on cancelling their opponents, resulting in a stalemate so far. The tactical games of the Groups are over and it's now the real tournament starts - knockout football - and hence the change of approach. Columbia are not averse to some strongarm tactics but the Jamaicans can be physical too if they want. Great first touch for Usme to score but questionable defending.

Yes, from an England viewpoint it would not be without value if the game goes into an extra time battle, but it's now up to the Reggae Girls to respond.

And there’s the City reference- 84th minute. I love you Jonathan Pearce.

Disappointing performance from Jonathan. Usually gets his mention in far earlier than that ?

Made up for it with his Marty Feldman Eyes referee reference though. Only those of a certain vintage would understand.

France go through at something of a canter against a Morocco side I thought would have been a bit tougher. Now they will face the Aussies in a rather different sort of match. I still think the French are yet to really fire on all cylinders and could be our opponents if all goes to plan but they need to raise their game now. Has their rebellious stance to oust the previous head coach led to an attitide?

Is it just me or are FIFA taking an absolute age to announce Lauren James' suspension details?

I've always assumed ban lengths are announced quicker than this

Automatic one game ban which kicks in on saturday.

Seems they're waiting until after the game on saturday to decide if she gets any further ban.

https://www.sportbible.com/football/women's-football/chloe-kelly-england-nigeria-womens-world-cup-760371-20230808

"Chloe Kelly’s game-winning penalty was the fastest shot recorded at the FIFA Women's World Cup at 110.79 km/h [69mph].

In addition to that impressive stat, the 25-year-old's penalty hit was recorded as being more powerful than any Premier League goal scored last season.

West Ham forward Said Benrahma registered the most powerful strike of the 2022/23 PL campaign at 107.2km/h [66.6mph]"

Fair. She`s held her hand up and apologised and is being punished accordingly but it would have been harsh if she had to miss what could be the greatest moment of her career for one second of madness.

Common sense from FIFA - not often you can say that!
