Thought the game passed him by again…

…did it bollocks.

I thought he was brilliant again. Keeps it simple to allow us to get the best out of Scott.

Even better with Naismith in that position today.

Him and Naismith complemented each other well today, both good on the ball and was able to play some triangles with Scott/Atkinson/Pring to move us forward.

Caught on his heels once late on but otherwise outstanding.

Who was that poster who said last week he had been “poor” after the World Cup break.

Clueless.

At a far lower level, I played defensive midfield. It is, genuinely, the most thankless job in the world. You work your nads off all game, cutting off angles, shielding, making easy (or seemingly easy) passes and generally working so other players can play. You don’t get any credit apart from when you’re not there and those angles aren’t cut off.

He did that excellently today.

Yeah, a very important role but not necessarily one that gets the plaudits or credit. A handful and I mean a handful of elite ones aside- Makelele, Busquets, Kante and probably a few more assorted ones. Not many do though!

Am I going mad or did I hear Downsy announce him as “our Captain, Matty Smith” before the game today?

With Weimann injured he was wearing the captain's armband today. Probably had a better game than the other captain on the pitch...

I think you may have missed the point!

You can @ me if you like Graham.

Outstanding is pushing it, but he was better today, as were the others around him.

I’m feeling bad.  Thought he was good today, just that I was watching Pring and Tanner so much, I kinda missed James mastery.  Thought Naismith was mixed in a decent way.

Didn’t put a foot wrong all game. As it doesn’t it pretty much every game. But because he’s a fairly unflattering footballer that won’t fit the narrative of most calling him crap

Glad someone started this thread. Being a defensive midfielder is probably the most un-appreciated position in the football pantheon.

But, what he lacks in speed, you can see James has in football sense and passing ability.

After a confidence crisis led him into some very poor performances, I thought he was excellent on Saturday.  The starting point of a couple of our goals, I believe.

Or even our very own Kalifa Cissé.
