Sunderland away match thread

Regardless of what others were doing Tanner did nothing to stop the guy. He backed off allowing him to advance closer to the goal. He then never got tight enough to make a challenge and allowed the guy to come inside and get a shot on goal unchallenged. Fact is Tanner didn't commit to forcing the guy away from goal or make a challenge to stop the shot IMO.

Again you're missing the point, Tanner had to over a run wide, a cut inside and a potential cut back because Vyner wasn't there to cut out a couple of those options. It was a great strike but had he tried to push him out wide and had got side stepped it would have opened up more space. He couldn't commit to the challenge as if it was wrong it was a one on one, he stood his man up but the strike was good and the half step was enough to create the space. Tanner isn't to blame there, he was damned if he did and damned if he didn't and although he made the best option which was to try and stand the man up for Vyner to reposition Vyner couldn;t get back in time and it was a quality striker from Sunderland.

We're far too quick to blame the player rather than looking at our whole team as a unit, Vyner caused the situation, Tanner was in a no-win situation and unfortunately was met with a touch and finish of quality.

Another bad situation caused by lack of pressure in the middle from the midfielders, Scott got wrong-footed, no other pressure and they've dribbled through. Lot's of little errors creeping into our defensive play now, the attack need to be more clinical to take some pressure off of the counter as the midfield is starting to get pushed.

Bizarre if we’ve taken Tanner off to play Sykes at right back.

It'll be to get Sykes involved in the attacks, Tanner is better deep, Sykes is dangerous going forward. Looks like we're going to try and overload them with attacking options.
