22A
Stick with me as this may end up City related. The RLclubs are discussing a proposal that the Super League be formed of the clubs with 1; the best grounds, 2; the largest fan base and 3; the most stable finances. Clubs realise that if this goes through,at least ten clubs would never be relegated. If that move does go through; how long till the EFL and Prem decide they'll follow suit? 1960maaan
Wasn't this a conversation had by some of the Americans in the Prem ? I don't think they came out and said it should change to no relegation, but the discussion was something like "we do this in the USA, isn't it better ?" I did wonder if the threat would increase the more Americans are involved, they don't like the chance of relegation . Can't remember who it was though. ExiledAjax
How is RL owned? By its clubs or by other parties?

milo1111
Anyone remember when the league was suspended when COVID broke, within a week almost every side in the bottom half of the prem was bleating about how relegation should be scrapped that year. don’t be fooled into thinking that sporting integrity exists. I hope it does happen one day as it would completely kill the prem. most of the games would be meaningless without relegation Edited April 20, 2023 by milo1111
A Horse With No Name
Was listening to this on 5Live last night. Of the 44 (?) clubs who voted, and that obviously includes many outside the top division, 32 were in favour, 7 against and 5 abstained. It wont come in until 2025-6 season and there will still be a route to promotion to the Super League so it won,t be a totally closed shop, but yes around 10 clubs would never get relegated. Another of the contributing factors , apparently, is the number of followers a club has on its social media platforms.

And Its Smith
Football wouldn’t go this way. Too many fans would go mad. It would ruin the whole sport in England

Mainly the British clubs - the ruling RFL council includes all the professional UK based clubs and 7 representatives of the community game (main amateur leagues, students, armed forces etc). Nothing can be passed without at least 4 Super League and 4 Championship clubs agreeing so the clubs rule the roost. There's a big difference in size of infrastructure with those clubs though. The smaller clubs would probably equate to a local non-league club here with volunteers keeping the show on the road and pay match payments rather than contracts. The Super League clubs however have academies and community programmes more in line with the EFL. In football you can't survive at higher levels without infrastructure and revenue streams (witness Yeovil, Burton and Scunthorpe in the Championship) where as in Rugby League the lower sums of money involved mean you can. There are two current Super League grounds that make the Memorial Ground look palatial! The idea behind the vote is really to encourage investment and grow the sport's footprint. That's a problem football will never have.

RIP Rich the Toffee. Todd Boehly has a reputation as a clueless yank. The Chelsea owner once asked his manager to field 12 players in a rare 4-4-3 formation. But when it comes to the business side, he's got it all worked out... right? In a recent meeting with some agents, the American was asked how he planned to recoup his £500mil shopping spree. Boehly assured them he could easily afford to spunk the cash because Chelsea qualify automatically for the Champions League each year, earning millions in TV money. After an awkward silence, one agent explained that Chelsea did not qualify automatically, and were unlikely to make it next season as they are currently 10th in the league. "That's nonsense! We're in it every year," Boehly chuckled, before excusing himself from the meeting. After consulting his team, he returned a few minutes later and admitted he'd got it wrong. Whoops. This may not be 100% true....
