Wants to get a permanent move abroad. Fair play to him imo.

If that's the case (as reported), then fair play to him. It's lifestyle aa much as anything and I could give him my blessing (that will come as a relief to him).

Despite what I said earlier. I love Joe Bryan and that goal against Man U was one of my favourite Bristol City moments.

What a rollercoaater this morning has been...

I always thought Joe seem to enjoy trying new places and cultures (London/Nice). He’s not your average footballer, much more likely to be found in a bookshop than a nightclub.

Great player for us, would have loved him back but best of luck to him.

Now this makes sense. Joe isn’t, it’s fair to say, your typical footballer - he’s pretty cosmopolitan and well read and I can see him wanting to experience different cultures even if financially less appealing. I’ve no doubt he’d rather live in Bristol than Blackburn, but a move abroad is a different matter.

As nice as Bristol is (certainly compared to the second City where I’m currently sat) I’m not sure it compares with the South of France. Can’t blame him at all.

He’s built different is our Joe.

So your saying he got the touch of a graeme le saux about him?....

Unless Pring is leaving I never got the Bryan signing. All the talk of playing in midfield or on the wing seemed silly too. Yes the versatility is there but not sure signing basically a career left back for the left wing would be something anyone was interested in if it was any other player. Not saying wouldn’t have him back but he wouldn’t be first choice for me on either left side position as we currently stand.

As someone else said, Roberts seems a much more sensible signing. Left side of the defence versatile and with Atkinson out covers us there and behind Pring which we don’t have an option currently. Still allows you to sign Currie if you really thought highly of him.

We talk about pathways and all that but we sign most to 3 year deals. Naismith, Weimann and James we all need to look at as being replaced in the next year or two. Football moves fast and a signing today that looks strange may look like a miracle just 6-12 months down the line. What I like is we are being linked with good players. Players with experience in terms of games played and versatile but all in all proven.

Mcrorie ready to take the next step from Scottish League to English championship.  Dickie arguably took his step and regressed. Still a great age and ready to get back to that level. Roberts has good experience in L1. Was in a good setup at Brighton and ready to take the next step in his career.

These feel like less clubs in the bags and punts that they used to be. More measured and sure. That is are target we go and get it done. You are a bit unsure then we move to the next. We definitely feel more professional than we have in a long time. Probably Steve Cotterill. Of course summers are a bit more boring not being linked with 30 players from 7 different leagues ?

You make it sound like we weren’t trying to sign him?  As for position, a lot of OTIB said “he ain’t a LB he can’t defend” so with Pring our best LB where do you think he was being signed to play?  As a high earner he wasn’t coming to share minutes.  Was he?

Maybe we will see us reignite interest in Currie then. More potential for punnery too.

With regards to Bryan, I would have liked to have seen him back but don't see this as the end of the world. I didn't really see him as fitting the mould of what we need and I am not convinced he is the Central Midfielder that a lot on here seem to think he is.

Agree on Bryan … didn’t think it was super necessary to get him when one of our best performers last season has his position at the moment.. Pring was my player of the season after Scott… but like everyone else I thought **** it it’s Joe Bryan ???

This young lad from Brighton may fit what we need way more. Happy to develop and fight for his place with potential to be sold on for a higher fee if that development works out… over someone who will be looking to play first team value with a very small sell on value.

Lets be fair at 29 JB probably want one more large payday..  I'm sure there's a couple of lower Premier sides that will offer him £50k a week

I’d be stunned if anyone offered him anything close to that!

But disrespectful that mate. @Bcfcshags has been right about a lot, ranging from highly unlikely team selections to the new kit supplier, and has fed information as soon as he has it. He’s as sound as an ITK as I’ve seen during my time on here and has only got one thing wrong that I remember (HWR playing Vs QPR). If he’s been steered wrong here then I’m in no doubt he’ll respond in the right way.

Not doubting your source, but wording it as “So we are just taking what someone called BCFCshags as gospel then?” comes across a bit needlessly confrontational

Always amazes me / amuses me in equal measure how people on here get so wound up about someone being ITK. We should be very grateful to them!

Genuine question as well, take it they are a well connected source?

Otherwise I’ve just had it confirmed that the deal is very much on, Joe will be announced next week

Took about 10 mins for your "source" to make you look daft mate.

If he's got the chance to go and play the MLS then I can't fault him for that at all. OK on a footballing level it may not be the best move but on a personal level it will be one hell of a life experience for him over there in the states.

Whilst it will be fantastic for him, most people that do go there do eventually return home. Unfortunately for him by the time that comes the Bristol City door will be closed for him.

Well i guess we are just being positive. Shame to not bring JB back but at the same time logical reasons for not bringing him in, if there are other options out there.

Shame but nice to see we have other targets lined up ready to go.

Good young cover for atkinson and Pring. Can play LWB, LB and LCB.

Derby mate of mine said he played LCB mostly as they played wingbacks most of the year but he did play a bit at LWB and LB.

Perhaps that's the O'Brien stuff from January moved on from too.

His sister spent a number of years in the states at college as well, so can absolutely see him ending up in the MLS.

It appears that we’ve made him a very good deal, but he’s said “thanks, I want to explore other options” (abroad)….I don’t think it’s us deciding there’s someone else out there and going for them instead.  I read it as:

  • target 1 - Joe Bryan - turned us down
  • Onto next target - assume Haydon Roberts

"We" were a little quick earlier in the thread to assume that Joe would have some preference to move back to Bristol and his hometown club. All of us are just trying to put the pieces together.

If we only offered a 1 year deal and he can get longer elsewhere then I smell a whiff of agent influence here. Agents are going to push hard for longer contracts this summer so that the contract has a bigger wage value and they can bank a payday before the new regs (which among other things cap their %, make players pay fees rather than clubs, and spread payment over the course of a contract) come into force in October.

If an agent can get a longer, higher wage deal, then they will be doing all they can to get a player to go there instead (even more so than they normally would).

Probably one of many factors rather than the sole reason for this falling through.

It's a shame but if he is going abroad respect for thsat More English players perhaps should but that's for another  thread..

..So long as 'abroad' isn't Cardiff or even Swansea ha!

Ideally I would have wanted Roberts and Bryan as can link up on left etc but such is life. Roberts has promise and think we ideally need a squad of 24-25. Unsure how many of the 2 fringe keepers we keep? Still questions about King and Kalas contractually so haven't yet stuck them in the below.

O'Leary, Bajic, Wiles-Richards

Tanner, Wilson, Vyner, Dickie, Atkinson, Pring

Naismith, James, Williams, Scott

Cornick, Bell, Sykes, Mehmeti, Benarous

Conway, Wells, Weimann

We can add McCrorie soon hopefully. Am I missing anyone in the above?

Idk but not sure he better than Pring at LB. Don’t think he is a good enough attacking player to beat out Mehmeti and Bell either. So must have been to share minutes? I don’t think we were going to flat out drop Pring, Mehmeti and Bell. There were minutes to fill from Dasilva’s departure and that is about it.

Have thought maybe we might drop the one behind the striker for maybe more tradition 3 in a 433. That would maybe open up minutes for him there too as a LCM.

Take out the name and history. Would have been signing a 29 year old former standout at that this level but not quite good enough for the step up. One who has come off a rough season where fitness was an issue. I think many would find it odd we are looking to replace Pring with that profile. Also think most would want their left winger to not be a LB even if an attacking one.

Also, don’t think earning has anything to do with minutes. He’d have had to beat someone out so fair enough if he did. As long as someone fits the wage structure I don’t think the number matters that much to Pearson.

I couldn’t understand why we would bring JB back unless Pring was off. I couldn’t see the lad taking a place from a specialist midfielder and I doubted that he’d be the best ‘winger ‘ at the club.
I understand that he has a good pedigree, experience and love of the club and city but all in all for me it was a strange one.
I think , in the end, this is best for all parties.
It was a nice idea at the time.

Joe - we can agree to disagree.

His name has nothing to do with it….generally many City fans think nobody is good enough for us.  If it was another footballer with his profile we’d be thinking differently.  Take Matty James signing.
