I bought my first flat about 1980 but worked for a bank. Couldn’t believe my good fortune getting a staff mortgage at 5% - now that’s considered high!

Yes you were lucky, we managed then bearing in mind the salaries were much lower then, so really it's all swings and roundabouts.

Isn't a key ratio income to price for housing.

Sympathy with both sides of the argument but it would be interesting to see average wage v average hours price in 1982.
