While I was waiting for my connecting train at Cardiff it rolled in, Heddlu observing.

Not sure why it stopped but don’t think anyone could get on - could tell it was the special from the occupants and the masses of Thatchers cans on display

Oh and it was a proper modern GWR train

Used it with the two kids. Arrived at Temple Meads at about 8:30 and was told by the policewoman “Go in there (small first class section) - there’s loads of soon to be drunk football fans in that bit”

Train journey was good. There was a trainspotter on board who was having words with every city fan who used the toilet and he thought was drinking under age. At one point he insulted a few city fans by proclaiming “You’re worse than the 22:32 from Paddington”

Escaped from the police escort and made our own way to the ground, probably got there 30 minutes before those who were escorted - a few trying to also escape from the cordon but unsuccessfully as they were more trying to barge through than walking round the outside with kids. Similar on the way back - police asked if we were going back to the station and we started in the cordon but there were a couple wanting to fight the Heddlu so swiftly turned back towards the ground and walked back to the station, got there at 3 for the scheduled 3:15 special which went about 3:40 after the cordon had got back to the station. Those of us who made our own way had the benefit of stopping in the Tesco opposite and stocking up on drinks as needed but water was provided on the train itself.

The straight through special was good for both getting there and I’d imagine for management of the crowd. Should be done again.

Don't get it, thought there were no trains due to strike, let alone football specials ?

NTTDS, was it an old type football special with engine and carriages?

No it was a 9 car iet. The rmt were out that day so there was a limited service on Great Western with guards duties covered by competent managers.

It was an overtime strike, not a full strike

Trains just finished earlier than normal with a skeleton service in the daytime

A few things did any one purchase split tickets and use the football special?

did any one get their tickets issued from Parson Street,if you did a big thank you from me

a request, please tweet an e-mail(or whatever) to GWR saying thank you for putting on the football special

and could we have another football special for the Cardiff match kicking off at 3pm(STAND BY FOR LIVE TV COVERAGE or game being moved to a 12:30pm on saturday or sunday kick off time)

If you still have your train tickets from the train journey could I buy them off you?

Surely if there’s no strikes on the weekend of the Cardiff game, there’s no need for a football special. Plenty of services there and back.

Betty Swallocks not sure what your trying to say here,

but if GWR want to run football specials that THEIR decision which I am quite happy with

I’m saying what need would there be for a football special if services are running as per normal, it’s not like there’s not enough trains going over to Cardiff on a Saturday morning.

GWR ran specials for other lot in season 2021/22 for two fourth division games to

Swindon(40 mins away) with FOUR service trains an hour from Swindon to the Bristol stations AND to

Newport(30 minutes away)with FOUR service trains an hour from Newport  to the Bristol stations

If GWR want to run a special for us to the Cardiff game which I presume will not kick off at 3pm

and the Plymouth away game on easter monday,I am happy with that.

See me on the special/s and I will buy you a drink                                                                     of tea or Coffee

Good PR for GWR, to keep us pesky football hooligans off the regular trains
