Yes, but the 5-yard sideways pass is often (if not usually) the right pass.  The player who plays the 5-yarder rather than going for the killer pass is likely to be doing the right thing.  Good football is based on the 5-yard pass.

Are you Lee Johnson?

Reading through this thread, Lee Johnson (the player) came to mind. He often didn't play the simple pass and often tried the impossible ball, and people got on his back (a little unfairly at times I thought) for it. Maybe the experience influenced him as a manager.

Personally I like to see a mix of pass (and move of course) and killer balls through when it's on. Endless passing can be a bit dull. I like what I've seen of Knight so far, a right pest for the opposition.

Like him too but our midfield failed to win enough 50 50s after their goal. Not sure we won much in the air either throughout the whole team.
When we get the ball down and play we look good but did we earn that right enough? Perhaps that’s where Knight needs another calm head ball winner alongside him rather than a somewhat frantic Williams.

Much the same against Rotherham, although this thread was something of a commentators’ curse.
Knight had a shocker yesterday. He gave the ball away every time apart from one back pass.

Knight did indeed give the ball away almost every time by running into trouble. To his credit though he did keep showing for the ball and chasing down right up to being subbed. Let's face it for 80 mins we were cack all over the place, bar Naismith & Dickie, so hopefully just a one-off blip for Knight.

It felt like that, but he made lots of successful passes…

…especially second half.

That improvement second half (not just him) enabled us to get 20 yards further up the pitch.  Instead of trying to construct attacks from the edge of our box we were building from the centre circle.  That was a key part of us looking better.  We were still bloody wasteful in good positions, Bell twice for example, one left wing, one right wing, clear of his man….runs out of play, lands another on top of the net.
