Not been since Ninian Park days, should I expect coins and bottles full of piss or have times changed?

Apparently, the city of Cardiff has changed and gone upmarket. Bute high street is now the home of assorted designer outlets. What was Cardiff East Docks is now a luxury yacht marina.

In keeping with this, you'll (hopefully) be showered with bank notes and bottles of champagne.

Yep Cardiff city centre and Cardiff bay really are decent places to go , good pubs and clubs in the centre / Bay Area and some trendy type pubs around roath and pontcanna ( think that’s what it’s called ) , we always get train there to go shopping but usually end up having a few beers and some food , come back with next to nothing sometimes .

If there’s a will there’s a way , I pride myself on getting away from escorts at away games , much older now so don’t do so many but when a young un always got away and ended up in random pubs .

As for Cardiff ( the time the young uns smoked out the Great western pub ) old bill had all the city fans kettled outside after 10 mins of realising the pub weren’t gonna sell any more beer and the old bill starting to gather round in large numbers I knew what was coming so a little manoeuvre between the police lines I was off like a slippery snake straight into the prince of wales just round the back of the great western had to keep me head down and say very little as lots of blue birds in there , saying that around the centre nowadays is deemed pretty safe cctv lots of Cardiff banned , there nastys tend to drink in the canton area ( our equivalent of Bemmy )

so basically keep your head down don’t get into a mob no colours no singing and shouting and you should be able to sneak off somewhere

Cardiff fan here.

Yes, you've pretty much summed up how things are with some good advice. The city centre is relatively safe and has some nice bars to have a pint. Personally, if I was an away fan coming to Cardiff I'd head for the Bay area. It isn't too far to walk from the rear of the station (or get a short taxi ride). It's a really relaxing area to go to, with nice bars and restaurants, and trouble-free too.

Good that you mention staying away from the Canton area. I have NEVER seen any noticeable away fans drink there (I HAVE met lone fans without colours). This area is a stone's throw from the ground, it has lots of pubs that are rammed full of home supporters. Just not worth the risk.

Driving . Daughter wants to park up in St David’s , have some food and walk to the ground, not a good idea ?

No colours or nothing.

Yeah it’s a bit of a stroll but do-able.

Parking wise you’ve got John Lewis and St David’s at the shopping centre/motor point arena end - both get busy on weekend and are more pricey.

The NCP just before them at Cardiff Adam Street is an option if very busy.

Street parking closer is a bit of a gamble availability and permit wise but there are little spots here and there.

Only time I’ve been to Cardiff (a) was the bubble match on an evening in the 15/16 season.

As this is a 3pm Saturday game, what is there around the ground, other than food stall type stuff?  Not looking for a pint, just prefer different food.

If I get to Cardiff early, is heading down to Cardiff Bay first an option?

Yes the bay is a good option Dave - take the docks road in and the first left off the queens gate roundabout onto Caspian way.

There is blue badge parking outside the wales millennium centre on Bute place or you’ve got Q Park Cardiff bay or Mermaid Quay Park. Other option is the red dragon centre.

It’s a bit further to walk but County Hall Park and Ride car park is free evenings/weekends.

is Pontcanna worth it or a bit too risky? If it's just two of us keeping quiet with no colours

Pontcanna is a very nice area and usually fine, wouldn’t say it’s risky - parking hard. Most pubs fairly chilled up and around Cathedral Road. Somewhere like Brewhouse and Kitchen should be fine for you with no colours.

I’d just avoid Canton, Grangetown, Cowbridge Road East, bottom of Llandaff Road etc

Walking through Riverside to the ground from the city centre/ station isn’t the nicest of walks either, probably be fine but like walking through Easton. Pontcanna area fine I’d park up at the Sophia Gardens off cathedral rd, loads of parking there.

For those who are slightly worried about the Cardiff experience please let me reassure you it really isn’t like it used to be , Cardiff is very much like Bristol ( but welsh 😂😂) seriously lots of nice bars etc and shopping area in my opinion is better than Bristol . One iffy area that has been mentioned is canton ( our bedminster )

no doubt there will be some flash points during the day but that will be with the likeminded of both sides , the old Cardiff just being an away fan was precarious but if you are there for the football and a pint and are sensible it’s no different than going to any other away game .

No, that’s Grangetown ( or strange town as it known as ) both pretty rough areas but not in a football way, most people who live in grangetown won’t even know a game is on….Riverside is full of dodgy hostels half way houses and hookers…you prob won’t notice walking across the bridge and down Tudor rd to the ground though as it’s mainly dodge after dark…..

I do know Cardiff fairly well , spent half my youth either chasing or getting chased round it when you played at Ninian , I also go over there a fair bit for work and me & mrs go there a fair bit shopping but also go over to have a few beers and something to eat .
quite like the bars & pubs around Mill lane ( that’s where I will be Saturday) planning on staying over there until about 9pm Saturday then train  back to Bristol

Growing up as a Welsh City fan, i spend most of my international breaks in and around the area, aswell as going to the University of South Wales. I tend to spend my International days drinking in The Moon on Womanby street before heading to Chapter arts centre, Avoid Canton at all costs as it will be nothing but issues for us on saturday, a quick suggestion maybe the far end of castle street! Perhaps Tiny Rebel,Gatekeeper etc before walking down?

Someone mentioned drinking in Newport, is this a decent option?
A guy with us has done his ankle so doesn't want to walk 25 mins to Pontcanna or the Bay area. Not drank in Newport for years , is it worth it?

There’s a Wetherspoons near the station I know quite a lot of city fans have done that before , as for Newport itself ,

umm stuck in the 80s is all I will say 💩 hole

Newport isn't a bad option for a few quiet beers before the game. You literally just have to stroll 50 metres from the station. Just be mindful that quite a lot of Cardiff fans use that station too.
