cheshire_red
Three United States-based businessmen who expect their Oldham takeover to be ratified next month want to establish the club as a force in the First Division inside five years. The New York-based Londoners and lifelong friends - Simon Blitz, Danny Gazal and Simon Corney - have spoken publicly for the first time about their aspirations for the struggling Lancashire outfit. The consortium, who made their fortune in mobile phones, hope the deal that has seen them buy the club and the land on which Boundary Park stands will be given the go ahead at a Football League board meeting on January 15. They aim to turn the Latics' on and off-field fortunes around by taking a financially stable club into Division One within five years. "We need to be getting 7,000-8,000 fans here at Boundary Park on a regular basis to achieve that aim," Corney told the club's official website, www.oldhamathletic.co.uk. Blitz added: "We've purchased the land and will now start taking on ideas in terms of what the council want us to do and what the locals want on the site. We hope to use the site to help pay for the long-term running of the club." The consortium are already in talks with manager Iain Dowie over a new contract and will retain both local businessman Barry Chaytow as chairman and Alan Hardy as chief executive. They will also work closely with the supporters' group Trust Oldham. The new owners have insisted the club must retain their Division Two status this season and that funds could be made available for new players to bolster Dowie's depleted squad. "The fun is seeing the fruits of your effort," said Corney. "To develop through working with a good team and to reach your goals. "We believe that if we put in the hard work, we will turn it round no matter how long it takes."
Niall
I'm pleased for them - despite looking too much like an alien for my liking, Ian Dowie has done great things on a next-to-nothing budget. Lets just hope they start their revival next season..........
Gazred
Seems now a days the only way to get an injection of cash into your club is to be on the verge of administration. Good for them all the same.
Guest WillsbridgeRed
It annoys me - Our bored work hard to keep us financially sound and what reward do we get? none. Then someone like Oldham get big businessmen ploughing in money and aim for bigger things.
Dave L
Ian Dowie has done great things on a next-to-nothing budget. Agreed. he's one of the few lower division managers who I think could do a job here if Wilson left. Others would include Paul Sturrock, Billy Dearden, Leroy Rosenior, Brian Little and, dare I say it I** H******y!
22A
I'm with gazred and Willsbridge on this one; where is our big backer? Thankfully our board keep us going, attractive stadium, neat passing football and loyal fans producing some of the division's highest gates, but no big backer. Draw a triangle Pompey-Brum-Cardiff and none of us clubs inside that have a backer.
