Not strictly football, but it does concern the City of Bristol. The Cleanest City top 10 announced.

The search for 2005's tidiest city has stepped up a pace with the announcement this week of the Top Ten finalists.

The British Cleaning Council's Cleanest City competition will see a tough battle between London, Westminster and Birmingham (previous winners) plus other contenders in BRISTOL, Cambridge, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Ely, Manchester and Truro.

Paul Pearce, BCC Chairman had a clear message to all finalists that citizens and tourists of finalist cities must continue using the bin, while graffiti in city centres must be nipped in the bud.

Chief judge, Ruth Drysdale, said: "A bug bear of the judges is trade waste on the streets during the day. This can often contribute to blown litter and spillages that may lead to a slip or a fall.

"Chewing gum appears to be on the increase too, and removal of these unsightly blobs is tedious and has horrendous costs. However, the judges applaud many councils that are introducing penalties for any type of litter dropping including gum and cigarette ends."
