Chesterfield Review

City's late show provided them with their second biggest win of the season against one of the poorest sides ever to visit Ashton Gate.

The match began brightly for City as they pushed forward, seeking their fifth league win on the bounce, and also to celebrate Brian Tinnion's first home game after his 500th appearance for the club. Chesterfield's early nervousness was apparant in defence and desperate clearances stopped City creating many clear-cut chances, although from one cross Chesterfield keeper Muggleton flapped and the ball broke to Butler who shot but it was blocked on the line and Peacock blasted the rebound over from 5 yards.

The game then became a dour encounter, Chesterfield's lack of quality not being too severly tested by City who had two or three players not at their best. Phillips had long range efforts saved easily enough, nd he was rarely troubled. Chesterfield resorted to time wasting as early as the 22nd minute and the ref eventually lost his patience and booked Ian Evatt for kicking the ball away, perhaps the third 'Field player to do so.

Then Lee Miller saw a headed goal cancelled by an offside flag, correctly enough, but right on half time City finally broke the deadlock, another right wing cross only being half cleared as far as Tommy Doherty who thumped the ball in on the volley from 18 yards.

The second half saw more urgency by City but Aaron Brown had one of his poor matches and was eventually replaced by Mickey Bell who soon enough tested Muggleton with a shot from the edge of the box which was palmed away. Tinnion and new boy Marc Goodfellow were pulling strings in midfeld and a secodn goal always looked on the cards, but at the other end with Carey and Butler having poor matches it was felt 'Field could feasibly get one on the break.

Miller was replaced by Leroy Lita and eventually, with time running out, Chesterfield collapsed, having expended their energy in competing with City's passing moves. Blatherwick fell over in the box tiredly on 84 minutes which allowed Lita to head in Carey's right wing cross for his first home goal, and two minutes later Carey himself scored, smashing in a low angled drive from just inside the box.

The best was reserved for last, Goodfellow receiving a clinical through pass from Peacock and he slotted the ball past a despairing Muggleton for the fourth.

Phillips: 6, comfortable performance without being tested too severely.

Carey: 5, terrible first half only partially atoned for by his late goal and contribution to another. Needs to cut down the long ball and needs to learn how to pass accurately.

Butler: 5, another bad game from an out of form man. Either needs a kick up the bottom or a spell in the reserves. Substituted for Woodman.

Coles: 6, competent performance, but not spectacular.

Hill:7, another good performance by the best defender currently at the club. Made one fantastic tackle at the end when the score was 4-0.

Goodfellow: 7, fine home debut, fairly quick, good control, nicely taken goal. After settling in one hopes he will get better!

Doherty: 8, held the midfield together, nice goal, great tackling and ran for most of the game. What he lacks in subletly he makes up in committment and bravery.

Tinnion: 6, quieter game than he can have, but passed the ball about reasonably well although some second half passes went astray.

A.Brown: 4, not in the game, lacked confidence in taking on Uhlenbeek hi smarker and more often than not moves broke down when it reached him. Replaced by Bell.

Miller: 6, won nearly every arial ball but lacks that bit of know-how currently to turn his skill into openings. Subbed for Lita.

Peacock; 7, led the line well, caused havoc for Chesterfraud's defenders and had more than one prostrate on the floor. A good front-man.

subs: Bell 6, did his job competently, was more effective than Aaron.

Lita 7, took his goal well and was too tricky for the oposition defence.

Woodman 5, not his best performance and even got booked for a poor tackle.

I thought all City players had a cr#p first half but disagree about Carey who I thought got the game going with his raids down the right, taking on and beating players, unfortunately not always used by Goodfellow for which he got a b#llocking, but eventually linking well and scoring the best goal of the game. Forget the first half and I would have had Carey pushing Doherty for MOTM.

England you never cease to amaze me. Carey for MoM??? he was bloody useless. Sooner we get rid of him the better and get a decent right back in. His passing was abysmal and only in the last quarter did he begin to improve!

Maybe not "bloody useless" but it was certainly not one of his better games. Thought him and Aaron had poor games, Butlet a bit dodgy, Doherty deservedly MotM, Peacock and Goodfellow excellent.

Chesterfield v.poor as many teams are that come to AG, but at least this time we finished them off well and truely :):D

Thought it was a shot myself but maybe I got carried away with all the excitement and am confused  :)
This is the chain of events according to the BBC:

83:53 Goal - Leroy Lita

Bristol City 2-0 Chesterfield.

Goal by Leroy Lita (Bristol City) right-footed (bottom-left of goal) from centre of penalty area (18 yards).Bristol City 2-0 Chesterfield. Assist (cross) by Brian Tinnion (Bristol City) from right channel.

That settles it then
