46 Games

Here we go then.

Another season about to start, and I'm particularly miffed about missing the first couple of games as I'm away. There's a real buzz about the place at the moment, and the mass wailing and gnashing of teeth that followed the end of last season seems to have been replaced by a general belief that we will waltz through this division and be crowned champions by Christmas, thanks to a few convincing wins against third rate teams.

Expectation amongst the City faithful is as high as it usually is at this time of year. We have a good squad, a manager who is learning all the time and has prepared meticulously for this season. Other fans see us as a shoe-in for promotion. Natural optimist though I am, time for a reality check.

We will lose some games this season. That won't make us a bad side. We will win some as well. That won't make us world beaters. We'll lose games we should have won, and win games we should have lost. We'll stuff some high flyers and almost certainly get tripped up by some bottom of the table bunch of hoofers. At some point, somebody will demand that Tinnion be sacked and that Lansdown should quit. If Marcus Stewart goes a few games without scoring, someone will wonder why we ever made such a fuss about him. If Bridges misses a game through injury, some wise owl will question the wisdom of having signed a player with such a history of injuries.

If we go on a good run, it'll be because we have so many young players in the team who know no fear. When we have a bad trot (and rest assured, we will) then someone will take great pleasure in pointing out that you don't win anything with kids and that we never should have sacked Danny Wilson.

The forum will be awash with praise, criticism, temper tantrums, mindless speculation, ill-informed jibes, bad spelling, good humour, bile and optimism. At some point, most of us will all think we can do a better job than the manager or the players, particularly after a few ciders.

But the most important thing to remember (though very few will) is that the season goes on for 46 games. If we're 10 points clear at Christmas, that doesn't mean we're going up. If we're 10 points adrift, it doesn't mean we're staying down. Either way, it'll give us plenty to talk about over the next ten months.

Bring it on!

ok, o bolox we're going to get relegated and the gas will go up, yeovil will win league 1 easily without losing a match, and they wont shut up about it. tinnion will leave us to go to rovers, because he now loves them so much, reading will win the champ, and west ham will win the prem and pardew will actually be liked.

happy now?!?

Indeed, and I just have a hunch that we might finally have found a squadful of players who all realise they will all have an important part to play over the course of the season, if needs be for all 90 minutes of all 46 matches.

Gawd knows the last few seasons have been plagued by wasters who couldn't even deliver that basic service!
