headhunter
25 years ago this weekend City parted with another 'legend' in the form of Alan Dicks.Ironically Swansea was the 5th game of the 80/81 campaign and a 0-1 home defeat saw Dicks fired on the Monday after almost 13 years in charge.I quote from one of the history books : "The City fans turn on Chairman Stephen Kew and Manager Alan Dicks after another anaemic display. Playing without direction or spark they are outplayed by a more skilful Swansea. Leighton James scord the only goal with a 20 yard curler".Just to prove that past City boards took decisive action in September you can go back another 13 years to 1967. A 4-2 home defeat to Blackpool [Match no. 8] in front of the Match of the Day cameras cost Fred Ford his job in his 8th season at the helm. That had included the promotion season of 64/65.For the record the last time City let in 7 was almost exactly 23 years ago [19/9/82] : a 1-7 reverse away at mighty Northampton. That ghame was described as "a totally undisciplined and humiliating performance" That didn't cost Cooper his job as everyone recognised he was doing as much as he could with available resources. Guest CashleysOnlyGoal
So HeadHunter in the interest of accuracy - whilst ignoring Dr F's theme - this surely was a case of Dicks In - followed by Dicks Out ?Similiarly do i recall another humping at the hands of the mighty cobblers five years later at the old Cricket Ground? Five or 6 nil?Now the current situation will surely make DW's tenure glow in our lengthening memories - just as Osman as you have argued represented our highest achievement in the last decade.Leadership on the pitch starts in the Boardroom - or not in our case apparently. 22A
Clutching at straws, but remember the 89/promo season?"In September a defeat at Northampton dropped the club to fifteenth position. Three wins and a draw then lifted City to fourth and leaders Tranmere were in sight. Disaster struck one Friday night on Birkenhead; City conceded an own goal, a penalty, had a player sent off and crashed six nil. A fortnight later, Swansea without a win all season, won 3-1 at Ashton Gate". Despite all that, City went up and the other three mentioned stayed down.
