Liam Robinson

One Team In Keynsham

Recommended Posts

Sat in the Tobacco Factory after the Swansea game the conversation turned to various City players of the past. I voiced my fond memories of Liam Robinson who, despite having a shocker of a year, I always recalling him having a go, running, busting a gut etc.

One of the lads looked at me as though I was insane, and questioned if I was feeling unwell.

Have I just blinkered out the dross of a sub-standard player and only remembered the "highs" of Peterborough home and away, or was he as I remember him: a tryer who was having a bad season?

Liam Robinson was great... He was an entertanier because one match he would be the worst striker in the world then the next he would do something fantastic like lob the Peterborough goalkeeper from almost the halfway line! I remember when he was in the team with Junior Bent.. The amount of balls that were lost flying over the east end were amounting to more each home game... Was fantastic to watch!

Liam was strange. He really looked the part. Right up until he got anywhere near the goal. It was just that fussy business about putting the round thing in the gap between the posts and under the bar that seemed a bit of a problem for him. Otherwise he was class :)

Although physically he was the antithesis of Bas Savage, he had the same qualities of working hard but not getting goals. I don't recall him having the same ability to hold up the ball and link play that Savage has, but I did feel sorry for him. I believe his goal-scoring record was decent when we got him. He never lacked effort and indeed had plenty of chances but just couldn't put them away. When he went, it was the right thing for him to do.

I certainly remember him with far more fondness than I have for the likes of Ian Baird!

Liam Robinson one of the worst players I've seen. Alongside Paul Tait (rovers i know but he's gotta be mentioned) and Bas Savage........

But to be fair to Bas Savage I've only seen him play once.....

Terrible post. How can you compare a player you have seen once to the others? Unbelievable.

Agreed :)

Back to Mr Robinson, always seemed to work hard, had pace, but no end product. Peterborough fans would disagree as i belive he only scored against them, one of which, i think his last strike for us, was a crazy dipping curling volley lob thing from out on the righthand side, a good 40yards from goal. Thats how i like to remember him.

I always liked him for some reason. He's one of those players who you look forward to getting the ball, you think they're going to do something

special yet never really do.

I was at the Peterborough away game when he destroyed them on his own, unfortunately I had to wait for the Peterborough home game for

him to do it again!!

Happy days.

And does anyone rmember what Mr Robinson did next on that halicon day in spring after the Peterborough goal?

He wheeled away to the Willams and was shouting to his mates...'flip knows how I did THAT'

Uncle Rog was close enough. It was a special moment.

I recall that last game of the season, he scored twice (David Rennie also scored - now there's lad who proved a good reason why players should NOT grow moustaches)

up to then he was rubbish. huffing and puffing but to no avail all season!

Little, rotund, buck toothed northener with a dyed blonde barnet.

and now I recall wasn't THAT the game that old Malone himself got cornered up the television scaffold and refused to come down without a police escort. He thought we were going to do for him!

(there was a bit of comedic chanting and a small crowd did gather for a while, but we had him down as a gashead then)

That's because the need to hold up the ball and link play hadn't been invented then! Back then you had to give 100% effort, get on the end of every cross (remember crosses?), and score whenever you had a sight of goal. I quite liked Liam despite the fact that he wasn't really any good. And as someone else said, at least we doubled our money - can't say that about too many player's we sold.

I had no problem with Liam, he put in some good performances and created goals for others, although with his finishing, that was just as well. Interestingly, the day he scored twice he played in midfield, behind the front two. A lot of fans had ben suggesting that, but it was tried a bit too late.

Just remembering that Peterborough away game for a moment.

Was that also the same game that Matty Bryant and Keith Welch had

a 'disagreement' about a dodgy back pass - that incident ended with Keith

giving Matty a cuff around the side of the head.

Liam Robinson reminded me in many ways of Soren Anderson a couple of years later.

Similar stature and neither were exactly prolific.

Managers at teh time couldn't seem to make up their minds whether either player

was suited to be on the right wing or up front.
