Dentist Hell

Who hates the dentist? I do but last time I got toothache I realise that it ain't worth putting off.

* When I was a kid I had a milk tooth that was slightly wobbly so the dentist suggested he'd yank it out. 'it'll come out no problem, Tiger' the old goon says to me. Twenty minutes later, he's still yanking, twisting and everything but kicking me to get the reluctant ivory out of my bloody gob. I walked home with blood pouring from the gum, so much so that I had to buy a toilet roll from a shop to keep it from gushing down my chin. That sort of put me off dentists and my dental visits have always been sparing.

* Then I got a toothache before christmas, the agony was horrible. Throbbing pain that kept me awake a night, soon I had to take parecetamol every four hours to keep from violent outbursts. The root nerve was exposed on a back tooth so I had a temporary filling put in whilst waiting for my appointment to come round.

* I went to the dentist today for a root canal on the tooth. This involves having the tooth drilled down to the top of the nerve, then a small metal file being pushed down your tooth to the root. That cleans the bacteria from the inside of your tooth which is then filled and capped. Ouch! I wasn't particularly looking forward to it as you can imagine, but swaggered in with feigned bravado.

* You can imagine my relief when the dentist says that having studied the x-ray he reckons we might be able to save the tooth without such drastic measures. Instead he did a bit of drilling, added a treatment to the exposed root and filled it in. Hopefully when I go back I just need a bit more filling and I'll be okay. Fingers crossed.

* Here's the funny/worrying part: when the dentist was drilling the assistant girl was holding some implement in my mouth. At one point the drill bit slipped of my tooth and drilled at her finger! :w00t: Fortunately she removed her injured finger from my mouth instantly before doing a dance of pain. The poor girl had to be substituted!

* Here's the worst bit: the treatment required numbing half my mouth which made drinking a can of Cherry Coke in public very awkward. I must have looked like a mental!

Any dentist-related stories/thoughts/ideas?

when the dentist was drilling the assistant girl

Just realised that!

I fully and wholeheartedly agree! I can think of no where worse in the world to be than the dentists chair. Unfortunatly me and my teeth don't see eye to eye! I had a full train track brace (top and bottom teeth!) for two years when i was 17! And finally after all of that pain! I was told i have soft teeth that are now crumbleling away! :grr: I was not impressed! I have since had 12 fillings and caps in the space of 7 months! :crying: Causing endless pain and a big dent in my bank account! I do not like the dentist! argh :@ :@ !!!! xxx

Soft teeth sort of defy the point. Bad news.

er...I haven't been to the dentist for nearly 14 years. I was pretty pi$$ed off when they said I needed 6 fillings - funny that having just turned 18 and not having experienced any previous problems.

I just can't trust them.

I know what you're all thinking 'ugh, I bet they're all black'. Well suckers you're all wrong!

I'll probably go back when a tooth hurts.

Thanks for the fascinating account Mozo. ;)

I should get back down Temple Meads with your notepad and flask if I was you.

I don't see the relevance of the dentists' ethnicity!?

I'm on platform 3 as we speak with my laptop, flask full of tea, custard creams, camera to take photos of the Penzance to Edinburgh at 17:10. Whoopee! :w00t:

 he he he! xx

You're right to laugh Gems - it's Virgin Rail so the chances of it arriving on time are slim! :pinch: It'll be five minutes late, then when the bugger finally turns up it'll have to wait outside the station for the regional service to vacate the platform...ahh the follies of full-time train-spotting

Did you catch it or were you escorted from the platform by the guard like last time? Commiting a lewd act in public last time wasn't it?

You should be asamed of yourself. Keep your dirty business to the confines of your caravan you horrible little man!

I love going to the dentist as she be a right saucy little minx.

Having said that, I went a couple of months ago to have a molar ground down for a crown to be fitted. Apparantly I had a "rogue nerve" that the anaesthetic couldn't touch. 45 mins of grinding in total agony.

I would have cried but I couldn't act like a wuss in front of such fitness.

Had to pick a fight with a small bloke on the way home....made me feel much better.

My wisdom teeth are coming up really oddly, so got a checkup in 6 months time to look forward to.. may well need them all out

You don't want them removed, you'll be living on cup-a-soup til you're healed and talking like Marlon Brando in the Godfather.

Ouch! Doesn't the anasthetic do anything?! :pinch:

I'm sure you'll be fine Sophs. Bit worried by the fact that we've got two stories already of calamitous drilling. Do these guys make it up as they go along or what?

In fairness I have to agree, I went to have one of my many fillings the other week and the anasthetic hadnt kicked in, the pain shot up the side of my face and I nearly punched my dentist! Ouch!!!xxx

i didnt have the anaesetic when i had a filling becuase the dentist said just say if the pain is too much and she will give it to me, i didn't want to make a fuss. She was like "some people must have higher pain thresholds than others" theres me like yea crying on the inside. christ next time i will defo have aneasthetic, hopefully there won't be a next time becuase i clean my teeth now!

Well, my dentist's got a cracking assistant and I'm certain i've impressed her with the amount of saliva I produce, and the muscular appearance of my arms as I tightly grip the arms on the dentist's chair, if that's the kind of thing you mean.
