Wrexham Review

Luke Wilkshire's early goal gave City their 11th straight win and keep them top of the table.

City in fact came out of the blocks fired up and in the first minute Aaron Brown got in behind the defence and his low cross was almost bundled in by wilkshire but the Wrexham defence got it away, but a carbon copy move a minute later gave City the only goal of the game. Aaron cut the ball low across the box and Wilkshire ran onto the ball and thumped it past a stationery Officer Dibble.

Wrexham's defence was a joy to watch led by their giant Trinidadian Dennis Lawrence who did a passable impression of a Tiller girl, kicking high in the air to no great effect. City bossed the game and in Tommy Doherty had a dynamo who hardly put a foot wrong. Wrexham's powder-puff attack hardly threatened City and although the home team worked hard to create chances, they were far and few between, although Lawrence's frequent air shots amused the crowd. Peacock turned the lumbering giant and fired low across the goal but half time came with City 1-0 up.

The second half saw much the same although City's work rate dropped slightly. Aaron Brown sent a thumping header towards goal on 57 minutes that Dibble clawed away, and the Wrexham keeper made a fantastic double save soon after, thwarting Leroy Lita's header and somehow palming Peacock's follow up off the line.

Wrexham's Brian Carey was booked for his twenty-ninth foul on Peacock which he vehemently disagreed with and referee Ted Danson made some erratic decisions as the game wore on, seemingly blind to some obvious fouls and awarding others for nothing.

As time ticked down Wrexham threw everything forward to try to equalise but City's defence, with Butler outstanding, held them off comfortably.

Ratings:

Phillips: 6. Not much to do except kick the ball downfield, and catch one cross.

Carey: 7. One of his better games, linked well on the right and tackled soundly.

Butler: 8. Best game of the season, looked more like his old self today, tackling, winning arial balls and some sublime footwork.

Coles: 6. Quietly efficient without being spectacular.

Hill: 6. Won lots of headers and made some good runs but his passing and distribution was woeful.

Wilkshire: 6. Scored the goal but was anonymous for long periods.

Doherty: 9. Outstanding performance, created some great moves and tackled well, also made many Wrexham players look silly with his footwork. Subbed in the last 6 minutes after he ran himself into the ground.

Tinnion: 7. Faded after a great first half in which he sprayed the ball about in his old style. subbed in the second half.

Brown: 7. Playing some delightful football at present, created another goal today and crossed well.

Miller: 6. Ran hard and took some hard punishment. Ran himself out and was subbed in the second half.

Peacock: 7. Becoming a very good target man. Selfless running and holding the ball up is a feature of his game.

Subs: Lita (on for miller) 6: ran and caused a nauisance but wrexham coped with him apart fom the header he should have scored with.

Goodfellow: (on for Tinnion) 6. One of two runs and showed a little of the passing style he has but didn't really shine.

Burnell (on for Doherty) only had 6 minutes so not long enough for a rating. Ran hard and buttressed the defence well.

Thought Coles distribution was a disgrace today but defensively he was ok,

Tins was all but useless throughout the game and was surprised he survived as long as he did - don't suppose he got p#ssed Thursday night?

Peacock looked far less effective after Miller was subbed and Peacock all but belted Lita for being a prat shooting when a square pass would have probably got us a second goal

Ratings:

Phillips: 6. - agree hard to say as he had so little to do, but thought he came out well for a couple of crosses

Carey: 7. yes, went forward well too

Butler: 8. looked pretty good again

Coles: 6. I would go for 5, thought his distribution was bad! and a few miss kicks at crucial moments, a better team would have made more of that!

Hill: 6. average game

Wilkshire: 6. Scored and got better as game went on so 7 from me

Doherty: 9. pure class, best player on the pitch by far

Tinnion: 7. definitely faded in 2nd, good subs by Danny

Brown: 7. started really well and one of his better games, but still faded in 2nd half

Miller: 6. deserves a 7 just for his work rate and the battering he took from them

Peacock: 7. agree pretty good but faded once Miller went off

Have you forgot the defence splitting pass that put Brown away to provide for wiltshires goal !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! didn't look woeful from where I was sat.

Overall, i thought they were all excellent, the workrate was possible the best i have seen from them, and demonstrated they deserve to be top on merit.......wigan style

And the way he chased down the Wrexham defence right down to the corner flag, won the ball and in turn managed to set Lee Miller up (cracking shot, just a bit high)

Oddly enough Matty was involved in quite a few attacking moves.
