Lcd Tv's

I appreciate this is not strictly BCFC but it is nevertheless relevant to us City fans.

I have just bought a Sony Bravia 32" LCD TV, primarily to watch the World Cup and the the Sky premiership football.

The retailers are pushing the sales of these TV's very much on the back of how great they are for watching football. Now I have to admit, I have not bought the HD Box (or want to pay an extra £10 per month to Sky to watch HD). When watchiong the football, the picture quality is very disappointing, (poorer than my previous conventional TV), particularly when I watch it through the Sky dish. This greatly concerns me as I will want to watch the Sky football next season. When I phoned the people who installed it and also Sony, they both said the same - you do get blurring when watching the football! The sets are really manufactured to go with the HD box!

The TV is still new enough for me to return it to John Lewis and say I would prefer a different make, Panasonic has been recommended to me. I would be really interested to know if anyone else has had the same disappointing experience.

I've got a Sony Bravia, it's a lot better picture than the Thomson LCD it replaced.

The response time is the key and the Bravia is a fast as any other current model.

Some info here:

Plasma is better for sports or stick to conventional TV. I have yet to see football in HD, so can't comment if it would be better.

Ther are some forums offering tech tips and tweaks that can ensure you get the best available picture,

That's your answer. You won't get HD without all of the HD equipment.

we've had that with ours we have LG Lcd TV we thought it might just be because its transmittin the pictures from Germany because we also bought a gold start plug thing and the picture is only crap with the football.

Thats interesting because I also purchased a gold scart lead and it also made no difference!

Also, I have read that the German pictures are poor compared with Sky so I am hoping (with fingers firmly crossed!) that when I watch Sky Prem football the picture may be ok. To be fair the World Cup ITV and BBC through digital is just about acceptable.

I also read on the Sony helpline that if you get blurring of the football this is not a fault with the TV - it is down to the tv companys poor output!

I still can't quite believe how they can market these TV's as brilliant for football and then admit (after you have purchased the thing!) that normal TV is still superior - unless you purchase the HD box and subscription!

Maesknoll is right, response time is the key (although on computer monitors it can be misleading because some TFT panels work differently).

The Bravias are by far the best quality picture available unless you pay a mint for a specialist make.

When you connect with scart to non HD sky you're getting 1/2 the resolution and you're getting it interlaced.

You will need to get a digital HD service and connect with the HDMI lead to get the best from it but when you do the difference will be noticeable.

If anyone's looking to buy one the shopping forum has a link to an electrical company that had a better price than anyone else I checked for the 32 V series one. Failing that Amazon's price (use the forum link!) is usually very competitive.

I don't like buying electricals from John Lewis because the price is increased to cover the 2 year warranty and they often sell subtly different models. In practise you're protected almost as much by the sale of goods act.

Ive got a 32" Panasonic LCD , HD ready, but not with a HD box. Picture quality is fine, very good in fact.

Previous "conventional" TV was panasonic also, very good picture on that before. LCD flatscreen is so much better though.

Surely John Lewis offer a 5 year warranty

Just to say I'm very happy with our new 40" Sony Bravia on the existing digital box. I was warned beforehand that until I got an HD Box the picture quality would be poor but I haven't noticed it yet so can't wait till I do get the HD Box.

I've got a panasonic 32" Viera and the picture is lovely, even through a standard sky box. Did a load of research in Dec/Jan and reckon this was the best tv for that size.

I've found that some LCD/plasma tvs do look rubbish when you put a lo-res source in. Most TV shops/dixons et al shoot themselves in the foot when the have row after row of HDTV sets all fed from a source that looks like it's from a coathanger in the basement.

Part of the stuff I looked into - apparently 32" or less - best to go with LCD. Bigger than that - go with Plasma. And you can't really go wrong with either a panasonic or LG.

This was all from 6 months ago, so might be out of date by now...

On most electrical stuff they give a standard warranty of 2 years as opposed to the one year most other retailers give. You can of course pay extra to extend that to 5 years with pretty much any retailer.

JL prices are higher as a result of the 2 years, and personally I don't think it's worth it because the law offers you significant protection if you know how to use it.

I bought a Phillips 36 inch hd ready lcd tele and the picture was crap. I was advised to buy a mains filter and hey presto, perfect picture on digital and analogue.

Not saying this is the solution but it worked for me.

I've had one of those Monster mains filters for a while now (both pre & post buying the LCD) and they also guarantee against any electrical surges damaging your equipment up to £20k!

The monster one also cleans up your aerial and sky signals.

Might be worth checking which Bravia range you got from.

Basically the KDL-xxS2010 series got poor reviews whilst the KDL-xxV2000 came top of all the lab tests. (xx refers to the screen size ie 32" would be 32V2000)

I've stumbled onto the 'WHICH' website!!

any info on washing machines?

Laughs.

Simple question for all you lot, isthe viewing pleasure so much better than a normalTV to justify the extra cost? Especially for a product for which the price is likely to reduce substantially quite quickly?

It's a gadget, of course it's worth the money!

I don't think the prices will come down that fast either, they've already dropped massively from 2 years ago and seem to be pretty stable.

Picture quality is better and as for waiting for the price to drop, how long do you wait? I know a guy who has been waiting 3 years to buy a PC and digital camera, he keeps waiting for the next technological step / the next drop in price, at this rate he'll be dead before he ever buys one.

To those who sent serious replies (of which there were many!) could I say a sincere thank you! Its been helpful as I now have a better idea of how I should tackle my problem i.e. get them to send an engineer out to inspect my set-up, suggest a mains filter, if that doesn't improve it, try to get them to exchange the set for a Panasonic.

I have now contacted John lewis to see what they will do for me. I will be interested in their after sales attitude and service.

I too thought i would splash out on a bigger screen for the world cup.

I went for the 12 metre non HD ready version, i couldn`t afford a brand new one but got a good deal on the one they used on the left hand side of the stage at last years Live 8.

Picture quality is ok although you do need to stand a fair way back to get the best view. I tried next door but this was a little too close so i am now watching from No26 which is 4 doors down.

The sound is awsome and i am getting complaints from as far away as Cheddar.

Don`t bother with gold scart leads, the 4 inch armoured cable is much better.
