Worst Ground

Just been looking through the fixture list on the OS and, looking at all the teams who have either been in the premiership or who have recently redeveloped their grounds or got new stadiums completely, it got me thinking about the WORST ground ive seen city play at.

For me its got to be S****horpe's ground. The away and home fans are only seperated by a7-8 foot high metal fence that has gaps between it, the toilets are basically port-a-loos and the refreshments bit is basically a burger van!

What ground would you say is the worst you've seen City play at?

For me it's gotta be Rotherham. Awful drive to the ground, past loads of derelict factories as you get into the town, and then the ground has/had loads of broken bottles cemented to the perimeter walls to stop the fans getting out! (surely couldn't be any problem with them trying to get in!!!)

Springfield Park- Wigan

Yes the good old railway sleepers inbedded into the grass to form a terrace to stand on, lovely lot of mud in the winter, jump up and your shoes were left behind!!!

Oh, what about the dump that was Newport County? I remember the toilets well, gave me nightmares for months. Had to be escorted down the side of the pitch to get to them, shown a dark, narrow, corridor under one of the stands. Climbed over beer crates that were full of cobwebs (I hate spiders) and broken glass all for a wee!!!

These modern stadiums won't have tales to tell like that in years to come!!! :D

Ah yes Aldershot as mentioned above. Was that down through some allotments in the dark as well?

For me the worst ground would probably be one of the horrible new things that have been built....maybe the new Northampton ground?

Not that I'm saying all new grounds are bad, some are much needed and improve a clubs fortunes considerably, but I still think it's a crying shame every time another old ground bites the dust.

Always hated going to the Millennium Stadium as well.

My favourite grounds are the places like S****horpe, Chesterfield etc

I know exactly what your saying, some of the new grounds just don't really get the blood pumping as much as standing in a rickety old terrace. Whilst I said Saltergate was the worst ground I've visited, I certainly don't mean that I don't like going there. Grounds I really dislike (rather then are the worst) are those like Priestfields, the Withdean Stadium and the Hockey Stadium - MK Dons. No character, no charm and probably cost £25 to get in as well..............

Eastville - Everyboby jokes about the smell, but it was eyewateringly, nauseatingly, stomach wrenching; the pitch was miles from the terracing and its was owned by a greyhound racing company

Trumpton - a non league ground and an absolute disgrace

The Memorial Ground - it's a rugby ground with a rugby pitch, enough said.

Wondered how long it would take for the Rovers ground to come up .

They could have a 40,000 all seater multi complex, with heated seats and naked waitresses that serve beer to you without even having to leave your seat....and I would still say its the worst ground ever!

However, they genuinely do have the crappiest ground ive ever visited! The Memorial "Stadium" is a pit that, if you were to drop an atomic bomb on the centre circle....it would do about a £1,000,000 worth of improvements

Aldershot is a good shout and Newport on the day of City's "last ever match" was grim but the passion of the 3,000 City fans made it memorable.

Wrexham always seemed rainy and bleak especially when we went there twice within a few weeks to get knocked out of both the Cups.

I'll always remember going to Norwich in the late 70's in the old First Division.

About 10 of us went up but only me and 1 other decided to go in the City end, the rest dispersed themselves in the comfort of the seats at the side. Others must have made the same decision.....

It was around Christmas time, freezing cold, windy and dark. When we got into the 'City end', we realised we were entirely alone apart from 3 other City fans who had London accents. No coachloads, or even carloads of fellow City fans whatsoever. On the other side of the fence on the huge divided covered end, just a couple of yards away, were hundreds of young Norwich fans with their faces pressed up against the partition snarling at us, shouting and gesturing for the entire 90 minutes.

City lost, we were chilled to the bone, hundreds of miles from home and we wondered why the hell we had bothered.

The ground was ok in fact, just goes to show it can be the circumstances rather than the facilities that can taint your view of a particular venue.

Oh, and Corinthian Casuals had it all, non - league ground, 0-0 bore draw and Millwall decided to pay us a visit. :noexpression:

Worst ground i have ever seen and some of the worst trouble as well which for the eighties is saying something.

I remember looking across from our position on the large side terrace before kick-off to see these groups of lads, grown men in fact and a really motley crew, appearing and then gradually swelling in numbers in the unsegregated open end to our left.

Really nasty looking bunch and not what I for one was expecting from the followers of our non-league opponents with a long-standing reputation for "fair play."

Some of the City "lads" obviously were expecting it though and were getting quite excited as they looked across. As soon as the Millwall fans had grouped they started to move across to our section and the City fans fairly hurtled down the terrace straight into them and it was bedlam.

The fans were eventually separated, but the Millwall fans regrouped and stayed for the match, not good news for some late arriving City fans who were apparently unaware of what had happened and the EP reported that two 15 year olds were badly beaten up in the only available toilet on the side opposite us after they innocently ventured past them.

You had to really watch yourself outside afterwards - the atmosphere was plain nasty, made worse because it was a small crowd, making it difficult to avoid the groups hanging around.

And we were expecting our only concern to be how many City would score that day....... :innocent06:

Nobody metioned Swanseas old ground. That was a bit of a hovel and coupled in with having to go there quite a few times and having to pee into a hole in the ground in the loos. Then looking up the other end to see their unique half stand.

That was one of the worst for me.

Stockport in the FA Cup a fair few years ago was also bad for me, I sat in the stand which consisted of no real seats. I think someone went round the local parks and stole all the benches then installed them into the ground, on top of that I spilt a boiling hot cup of tea all over me trousers at the start of the game and had to sit there soaked all game. We did win though!!

What about Cambridge years ago - parking in a field and then walking across the boggy field to reach a dump of a stadium, or Shrewsbury and Gay Meadow - celebrated a goal and hit my head on the tin roof at the back - good atmosphere mind !

Grounds nowerdays are so much better even though most have little atmosphere - the older days is where the seriously crap grounds were - Grimby smelling of haddock ?

£50 per person, includes complementary can of Raid.

Without a shadow of doubt its got to be the old Northampton Ground (was it called the County Ground) which doubled as the County Cricket Ground - My one and only visit was in 1981 (?) on a Sunday afternoon and we lost 7-1

now that was a dump of a ground, don't know if it was the same match but i can remember going there and getting hamered, with two men sent off [paul fitzpatric was one] herded into a small stand almost behind there stand and could not see a thing.... awfull stadium... :ranting:
