Red Head
I'm sorry, I was just being extremely rude, but my purile humour clearly wasn't obvious enough and must have flown over your head like Concorde on speed...! Sorry for bringing the tone of the conversation down somewhat...I see now, have to watch the way i reply! Good stuff
surreyred1983
The word 'fan' is a slag word for fanatic meaning someone is fanatical about a particular thing/sport/interest; surely with your argument a 'fan' would show a stronger support then a supporter!? Red_Mat
The word 'fan' is a slag word for fanatic meaning someone is fanatical about a particular thing/sport/interest; surely with your argument a 'fan' would show a stronger support then a supporter!?Actually, that's not correct; the word 'fan' actually derives from the word 'fancy' back in the 19th century when a 'gent' would assume the support or involvement of a team as a fancy! This was then shortened to 'fan' over time.If it was short for 'fanatic', 'fan' would be pretty much the same as 'supporter'. However, because it's true meaning comes from such a flakey-sounding word as 'fancy', it actually makes there more of a difference between 'supporter' and 'fan' - which is what the point of this topic is about!
