  1. Confused, because what the **** has banning flares at football matches got to do with "political correctness"? Nothing whatsoever to do with "PC" apart from the fact that PC Plod will nick you if you did that. Nothing whatsoever to do with politics at all. The clampdown on pyrotechnics was widely announced, so you've got to be half-daft if you bring one along to a match. We can debate whether such draconian measures are "health & safety gone mad" (which is a completely different thing to 'PC') and that is being done on this thread. My personal opinion would be if they do present such a danger to supporters with breathing problems then fair enough, keep 'em out of the stands, but it would be nice if there was a means by which coloured smoke might be safely generated at critical times. It does add to the atmosphere a lot more than twirling your scarf around yer head! Anyway, hope the first line helps you not be confused as to why confused emojis appeared. ?
  2. Rest in peace, fellow Red. What memories he took with him! My condolences to all family and friends.
  3. Yup. By 25, you certainly want to hold down a first-choice place in whatever club you're playing for. I thought Cundy was pretty decent and did a good job for us when we called upon him to make that step, but he's probably better getting consistent time at L1 than occasional appearances in the Championship. He might still develop into a more-than-ordinary player in his late 20s and be the grade the second-tier demands. Sometimes you have to step backwards to move forwards.
  4. To enjoy the games and support your country doesn't make you a "glory hunter". It's true, I'm not about to rush out and get a season card for BCFC Women, but I do have more respect for the ladies' game and will be more likely to watch the odd televised game in future. Not because I've clambered on any bandwagon, but just because I enjoyed the matches I watched. As others have said, the technical improvement in recent years has been amazing. I'll doubtless remain largely a watcher of the men's game, but I won't be as quick to dismiss the women's version. It isn't the same as men's matches, but these Euros have proved to me that they can be a decent watch.
  5. That's a lot more polite than the adjective I was going to use...
  6. Bloke spends more time with doctors and physios than he does with coaches and managers.
  7. Well said. To reiterate, not everything needs to be (or can be) compared to men. Men hold all the furthest, longest, fastest world records, but that's a result of the natural advantages we were born with. Women have still given birth to all of us, and that is never gonna change. No one can doubt our Lioness's were giving their all out there and from the 75 minutes of the game I saw - which sadly due to work was almost the only time I watched a full half in this tournament - they play a lovely, skillful, high-tempo passing game, which was pleasing to the eye. I felt quite emotional when we got the win as did my daughters, one of whom "doesn't like football". It's a good thing for England, a good thing for football, a good thing for women's football, a good thing for women in sport, and for women in general.
  8. I tell you what: why wasn't Bob Houghton's half-time talk more inspiring, so the lads were able to keep up the pressure for the last 45 minutes, and isn't it about time Les Bardsley gave us a definitive date for the return of Semenyo and Kalas.
  9. If it wasn't for bad luck, we'd have no luck at all.
  10. Viiman (as it says on the subtitles) and Vyner. Vi like it!
  11. I hate vines, Jeremy Vine and Zak Vyner. Well, to be fair Jeremy Vine is OK and vines are a mixed bunch.
  12. The meltdown will be when he makes a costly mistake. Not good enough last season, now, mysteriously, good enough. (C'mon Zak. If that post isn't encouragement to have a stormer, I don't know what is! ? )
  13. When Private Eye used to do Colemanballs one reader living in Switzerland submitted this bit of Swiss radio commentary: "But the game's not over yet, there's still 89 minutes to play..."
  14. Best Soap Opera dream sequence since Bobby Ewing dreamt an entire series of Dallas.
  15. If City fans think Bristol City Council are anti-football, you should read about what Bournemouth Borough (Now Bournemouth Christchurch & Poole) Council has been like over the years. Various efforts to increase capacity or relocate have been knocked back by a local authority that would rather there were no sports in the area other than lawn bowls.
  16. My old geography teacher Alec Lees was a ref, who even reached International levels (he reffed an historic Soviet Union v China game in the 70s). Us kids always liked to take the pee on Monday when Mr Lees got a 0/5 rating in the Sunday papers after an inept display.
  17. Does indicate we've spent more than 48% of our existence as a second-tier club which backs up those who say that's our "natural" level.
  18. The guy's still making us laugh, after he's dead! I echo what others have said that if ever there is a case for the club playing a special tribute, it is now, for Stoney.
  19. I think we're fine for them, but if you were a Striker, you can give Nigel a call....
  20. Not many folks deserve the moniker "legend" but that man did. There can't have been many supporters who haven't encountered and shared a joke with Stoney in the ground or in the pubs of south Bristol. He was City through and through and what a character. My condolences to all family and friends. We've really lost a good 'un.
  21. There's usually the odd underhit back pass or just a total failure to pick up a goal threat, from Zak. He'll have a decent 89 minutes, but the minutes he has switched off for have cost us numerous goals. I guess if no one wanted him, we're stuck with him for a while, but my heart sinks a bit when I see his name on the team sheet.
  22. He played Alan Dicks in this film about the 1982 Ashton Gate Eight affair. I think Jose Ferrer played Trevor Tainton....
  23. One of them things, like there being no arsenal in London N5, or there being no port in Burslem.
  24. At 500 years old, he might not be considered "one for the future".
