  1. Well said. To reiterate, not everything needs to be (or can be) compared to men. Men hold all the furthest, longest, fastest world records, but that's a result of the natural advantages we were born with. Women have still given birth to all of us, and that is never gonna change. No one can doubt our Lioness's were giving their all out there and from the 75 minutes of the game I saw - which sadly due to work was almost the only time I watched a full half in this tournament - they play a lovely, skillful, high-tempo passing game, which was pleasing to the eye. I felt quite emotional when we got the win as did my daughters, one of whom "doesn't like football". It's a good thing for England, a good thing for football, a good thing for women's football, a good thing for women in sport, and for women in general.
  2. I tell you what: why wasn't Bob Houghton's half-time talk more inspiring, so the lads were able to keep up the pressure for the last 45 minutes, and isn't it about time Les Bardsley gave us a definitive date for the return of Semenyo and Kalas.
  3. If it wasn't for bad luck, we'd have no luck at all.
  4. Viiman (as it says on the subtitles) and Vyner. Vi like it!
  5. I hate vines, Jeremy Vine and Zak Vyner. Well, to be fair Jeremy Vine is OK and vines are a mixed bunch.
  6. The meltdown will be when he makes a costly mistake. Not good enough last season, now, mysteriously, good enough. (C'mon Zak. If that post isn't encouragement to have a stormer, I don't know what is! ? )
  7. When Private Eye used to do Colemanballs one reader living in Switzerland submitted this bit of Swiss radio commentary: "But the game's not over yet, there's still 89 minutes to play..."
  8. Best Soap Opera dream sequence since Bobby Ewing dreamt an entire series of Dallas.
  9. If City fans think Bristol City Council are anti-football, you should read about what Bournemouth Borough (Now Bournemouth Christchurch & Poole) Council has been like over the years. Various efforts to increase capacity or relocate have been knocked back by a local authority that would rather there were no sports in the area other than lawn bowls.
  10. My old geography teacher Alec Lees was a ref, who even reached International levels (he reffed an historic Soviet Union v China game in the 70s). Us kids always liked to take the pee on Monday when Mr Lees got a 0/5 rating in the Sunday papers after an inept display.
  11. Does indicate we've spent more than 48% of our existence as a second-tier club which backs up those who say that's our "natural" level.
  12. The guy's still making us laugh, after he's dead! I echo what others have said that if ever there is a case for the club playing a special tribute, it is now, for Stoney.
  13. I think we're fine for them, but if you were a Striker, you can give Nigel a call....
  14. Not many folks deserve the moniker "legend" but that man did. There can't have been many supporters who haven't encountered and shared a joke with Stoney in the ground or in the pubs of south Bristol. He was City through and through and what a character. My condolences to all family and friends. We've really lost a good 'un.
  15. There's usually the odd underhit back pass or just a total failure to pick up a goal threat, from Zak. He'll have a decent 89 minutes, but the minutes he has switched off for have cost us numerous goals. I guess if no one wanted him, we're stuck with him for a while, but my heart sinks a bit when I see his name on the team sheet.
  16. He played Alan Dicks in this film about the 1982 Ashton Gate Eight affair. I think Jose Ferrer played Trevor Tainton....
  17. One of them things, like there being no arsenal in London N5, or there being no port in Burslem.
  18. At 500 years old, he might not be considered "one for the future".
  19. We ate in the middle of that market (La Boqueria) in the amusingly named El Quim. Fantastic paella and great Spanish wine selection.
  20. You are correct, but nonetheless he was one of the many that got away. Brum had been a more successful club than us in the mid-60s, but by 69/70 they weren't. We should have been a more attractive prospect.
  21. Just him. Hopefully Wade Elliott will tell him: "You've got a friend".
  22. Trevor Francis was a notable one from the dawn of time. Not that we ever deemed him worthy to be on our books after his trial with us.
  23. Think that's reading too much into it. any young striker should have loads of self-belief and drive, and Louis has that and was obviously disappointed to be released before getting a chance to get fit after a lengthy injury. He's quite clear, he'd rather have had the chance to prove himself with a L2 loan, and I'm not sure why that option wasn't pursued, if - as he says - there were interested clubs. However, he mentions he "doesn't hold grudges", he's out to prove himself in Ireland, with an obvious view to getting an English club interested in him. He's hardly "criticising" the club, or Nigel Pearson, as the URL suggests, merely mulling on his disappointment and making clear he wants to return to an English league club. And remember, the quotes the Post used will have been carefully selected to make it look like he's bitter.
  24. I had the worst holiday of my life there. My wife and I were staying in the Port Gaverne hotel just outside town with a couple of friends and the owner and staff were consistently rude and brusque. Later they managed to give our friends food poisoning and rather than being sympathetic, insisted they be turfed out of their rooms at 9am, while I drove to Port Isaac to try to source some Imodium, not helped by the locals who were as offish as the hotel staff were. This was in the late 90s, so maybe the hotel has changed hands since. Or hopefully been demolished.
