  1. I'd like to keep it but do what they do in the A-League where, similar to Rugby, the referee is Mic'd up and announces every decision to the crowd. Doesn't mean we need to agree with every decision but at least the people in the ground have clarity!

I still think the issue isn't VAR it's the application and 'clear and obvious', I think the threshold needs to be lower and referee's need to be encouraged to give what they see knowing that if they've made a mistake they have the choice to go to the screen and change it. They're shielded to not make decisions because of 'clear and obvious' but if refs are empowered to give decisions on the pitch and use VAR as a safety net I think we're likely to get less controversial decisions.

One of the great Ashton gate nights this century, how time flies

Has there ever been a moment where somebody has shaped up to shoot, 20 yards out, bodies and goalkeeper in the way but as soon as he took his first touch you just knew it was going in?

I can't think of a player in the last 20 years I would have rather had on the end of that second goal than Trundle, his natural and technical ability was phenomenal!

I tell you what, I think Luton has played this whole process perfectly. They have improved their squad and will if they retain some of their signings, have a strong season next year.

I agree, they seem to have a squad and work ethic with a few additions that could do very well again and put them in a better spot if they manage to go up again.

Other than Barkley, I'm not sure they will lose many players so the core is already there so would back them to have a good season. That being said though it can sometimes be much harder going into games as favourites rather than underdogs, teams will be happy to sit back and defend and play on the counter like Luton themselves have done.

Either way, I don't think they'll need to spend big to push for playoffs but think Sheff Utd and Burnley probably would. Burnley's recruitment was mental, very limited Prem Experience and seemingly trying to sign players of a similar calibre and playstyle. I tipped them when they went up to have a good year, thought Kompany would be savvy, invest well and tweak the playstyle to suit the higher standard. As it turns out, they did none of those things and other than the past few weeks have been shite.

No - not revisionism at all. I had the same view on Flint for pretty much the entire time that he was at City. His limitations were clear for all to see.

Not sure I agree, think Flint's distribution was actually pretty good!

Certainly not a Webster/Dickie but Flint's long passing, particularly diagonal balls in behind, were at times exceptional and certainly not a hoof ball/hit and hope player.

He also wasn't slow, if you watch any attacking set piece he was always the first one back moving past people like they weren't there! His straight line speed was seriously impressive. Obviously he wasn't as quick on the turn but wouldn't have said he was any slower on the turn as a Baker for example... Flint improved so much from the player we signed, other than a poor run of form where he was culpable for several goals (can't remember if first or second year back in the Championship) I think he was exceptional for us and a far better player than you've portrayed.

I also think we sold him at the right time and had the best of him!

sAlso would Mehmeti get as many starts under Manning if Bell didn't get injured? I'd expect not.

I actually disagree here and think he probably would.

Bell is a bit of a concern for me, I rate him more than most, think his pace is such a valuable asset and don't think he deserves some of the flak he got this season.

However, he doesn't suit this system at all! He's neither a number 10, lone striker nor a wing back and if this is our way to go I'm not sure where we will see him play. Think Anis would have began starting as soon as we changed shape regardless of Bell's injury. He would have given us extra options and fluidity from the bench but not sure we would have changed shape and think he would have been shoe-horned into that second number 10 slot similarly to how Sykes has been used.

Out of all our attacking players for next season, think Bell is the one who will suffer the most and be interesting to see what happens there as I don't think he possesses the attributes to play that role.

  6. I think we'll keep Murphy and Stokes with uis up until Christmas and go from there, it's a big step up and think keeping them in this environment to help physically and with the extra intensity and standard.

If they both stay fit can see both becoming embedded squad players next season and being rotated in and out based on form and fitness. Stokes in particular, seems to suit this 'two number 10's' formation really well and wonder if that will help is progress quicker.

  7. I don't think it's coincidental that Tins blocklist seemingly are some of the more 'influential' fans (I didn't make the blocklist) in terms of followers and often provide stats and data to back up their opinions.

Genuinely makes me believe he wants to be more prominent on social media without the negativity that always follows so trying to minimise the differing opinions and debates.

This also feels like how the club is run at the moment... I'm at the point now where they've managed to convince themselves to believe their own lies and removing anybody else that dares disagree.

He was forever getting targeted by taller wingers and beaten and cost us a number of times. Was much quicker before the injury, was ok going forward, but no way a defender. Sorry it has to be more than just having a good song to be a good player

If this was forever happening and cost us there must be loads of examples then?

The height thing is constantly chucked around in relation to Dasilva and think so much of it is unwarranted and just lazy. He was also never particularly 'quick' whilst sprinting and did his best work in tight spaces as had good acceleration rather than out wide as a LWB and a greater reliance on speed. Until this season (where Pring has developed so much) Dasilva was far better defensively than Pring who did offer a lot more going forward as well as that explosiveness we needed at LB/LWB

Ultimately, like Roberts has shown, you don't need to be overly aerially dominant to play defence in this league and both players have shown great awareness to find ways to mitigate their weaknesses.

Never rated JD, too small so no good defensively, OK going forward

I would like to see Pring & Roberts switched, as I think Cam is the better defender and Roberts is better going forward, its a nice problem to have

Genuine question, but how often did a winger ever get the beating of Dasilva? Very good defensively, read the game incredibly well and produced plenty of interceptions! The height element we largely counteracted by reacting to the second ball but think you do him a big disservice by saying 'no good defensively'.

In terms of Roberts, he seems perfect for left of a 3 or orthodox LB in a back 4, doesn't have the explosiveness to play wingback but certainly has everything else in his locker to play across the whole back line. His over/underlapping runs last few weeks have reminded me of a higher level version of Derrick Williams in our league 1 promotion season.

Think next season could be a big year for him and think we'll see him more at CB than LB personally as his defensive game evolves.

Should a ref be in charge of games involving rival clubs of the team they support as we have had Atwell and Keith Stroud  a lot over the years ?

Is Keith Stroud not just shit for everyone though... ;)

I do agree with your point above and ultimately if Forest had complained before the game like they said and they had the chance to change it then they should have, removes this whole debate. I'd be interested in hearing why he wasn't removed as VAR and think this will rumble on more

I do have sympathy for Forest, but I'm not comfortable with the tone of bias and cheating in their statement and think its unnecessary, call out competence not behaviours.

At least two, first one was soft but the handball should have been (but maybe not if you follow the Grealish one?!) and the third was a nailed on pen

I think if all 3 were given onfield VAR wouldn't have overturned any of them, I think they should have overturned the last two though and think the 3rd one was as Stonewall as you get. (However, I get why the referee didn't give it from his angle so VAR should have been all over it!)

The Forest statement for me is a big concern and heads need to roll for that. Think there's a big difference between implying somebody is incompetent as opposed to calling them out as cheating and corrupt. Having watched Stuart Attwell over the years I certainly don't think he's competent, but it's then a big leap to accuse of consciously cheating...

  12. I think the problem for Palmer will be he plays in that 10/RW where we're very well stacked.

I can't see Southgate dropping Bellingham deeper so your number 10 position is already filled.

Rice            Mainoo??? (This second holding position is a concern)

                      Bellingham

    ???                                         Foden

                       Kane

Really only leaves the RW spot assuming Foden comes off the left wing, would be amazed if Southgate deviated away from Saka even though he's actually having a quiet few months! Think another issue with playing Palmer on the right is he's not going to run in behind Kane at all. With Kane being so effective dropping deep (I like that he does it) then you need players being able to run in behind which is what Saka offers. With somebody like Palmer there we would end up with 4 number 10's essentially and nobody stretching the opposition at all.

Think Maddison will suffer with the same issue as Palmer and don't think you can take both, pre-christmas I'd have had Maddison in there all day despite Palmers form but he's not looked as sharp since his injury so wide open!

Frustratingly, the answer is to trust Rice to hold by himself and play Bellingham as more of an 8 but I just can't see it happening!

Still need to consider players like Bowen, Gordon, Grealish, Rashford, Eze and even somebody like Gibbs-White. Will be a lot of talent not going!

its not a trip your saying its the same and with respect fella thats not how you ref you apply the laws to each different separate incident. if you watch the clip of Phillips and Gordon there is no trip!! The only contact is? Phillips smashing Gordon. Clear 100% foul you cant kick a players leg away.

At what point does it become obstruction out of interest?

Gordon has made no attempt for the ball and has prevented Phillips from getting there? If Gordon had touched the ball then I agree 100% penalty, but the above logic doesn't work as a player about to cross/shoot in clear control of the ball kicks a player who's attempted a tackle (and missed the ball) would be seen as a foul by the attacker?

Thanks for the summary.  I switched off after 2:30 when asked "The last few weeks have seen results drop away.....  Have you seen enough in our performances to assure you that results will turn around again?".  I gave him until the second word of his answer, which started "Yeah, definitely...." and exited immediately because I knew that what would follow would be either dishonest or delusional.

Another thing of note for me was that he's been banging on about getting the players "on the grass" to work on the processes and behaviours (🤮), and so with an international break they've worked on getting the players fit physically and mentally and "done some work on tactics".  Surely this should've been the ideal time to focus on the tactical side.  There were no matches that the players had to recover physically from etc, so why, when given time to work on tactics does he relegate them to an "also" afterthought?!?

Clearly Dr Lansdown didn't want the players being 'deconditioned' during the International Break and advised that we just run for two weeks...

  15. I've gone for Tinnion as I think he would do more damage in charge of a summer transfer window than Manning...

However, you could argue that them sacking Manning is 'learning on the job' and maybe accepting they've made a massive balls up and start again.

Like I said, you could argue that, but you'd be wrong as they're too naive/stupid/proud and we will just begin the cycle again.

  16. What scares me is if Manning goes it'll be Cisse, Mountain and Bell to the end of the season... Then we'll get 'Holdened', they'll get 3 year deals and we will find ourselves living the dream in league 1 once again.

The concern for me, I can't think of any manager I would want that would be willing to work under this absolute shit show of a structure and organisation

Take a deep breath and read my reply again, I didn't say you had mentioned Manning

As I said its very possible if there's anything impacting him it could be outside of football?

Another thing, he's just been called up to Scotland U21s, maybe he's disappointed he thought he'd be in the full squad and he's already been told he's not going to be promoted?

No you referred to it as 'nonsense created to bash LM' which based on my post and subsequent response isn't true...

    But hey, keep on patronising

To be fair many of us could copy and paste the above and insert another players name from the years of supporting our club

As you and so many are suddenly body language experts perhaps you could explain where this body language has been shown and how it proves it is all to do with his football?

God forbid a young lad may be having personal problems completely unrelated to football if at all

This is just the latest nonsense created to bash LM and all of sudden people take it as confirmed

Wait, where on Earth have I mentioned Manning or implied it's anything to do with him!?

I think ever since the club (which I think was Pearson to shatter your illusion I'm beating Manning with a stick) went public with a contract offer Conway has seemed more frustrated in terms of body language and attitude on the pitch and to some extent in his press interviews. The interviews have been a lot more guarded rather than full of excitement and enthusiasm like they were last season, even to some extent after the West Ham game too. A lot less comments about the club and how happy he is to be here...

He's been clearly more frustrated with his team mates when he's not received passes after making runs or players make the wrong option! What else are we supposed to infer from that? 'Ah, Conway is annoyed that Williams has overhit another pass but maybe he's just frustrated with stuff away from football?'

As I said, I don't think that's diminished his work rate at all and given he's isolated with no support who can blame him for being more frustrated? As you've mentioned Manning, it's clear he's not found a way to use Conway effectively and that's a really big issue right now, one of several piling up. But it's also not related to the contents of my post.

Stop looking into agendas that aren't there and focus on the post, I wish I was subtle enough to infer and put things between the lines but I'm really not.

  19. As a Father of a 6 year old boy who's hero is Tommy Conway I'm going to be gutted when he leaves in the summer.

For those abusing him me and my Son were fortunate enough to meet him and I can honestly say I've never met and spoken to somebody so down to earth and normal. He made such an impact on my boy and whatever happens I'll always be grateful for that.

To me, he seems frustrated and there does seem to be an acceptance from him in terms of body language that he'll be off but I wouldn't say that's diminished his work rate at all.

I think I read an article in the last couple of months, which essentially said. Hoofball into and around the box is still more effective that Guardiolaball.

Soon, an unexpected team will do this and win the premier league.

Could argue Leicester did this to some extent just not with a typical target man.

The plan was always get the ball forward as quickly as possible to Vardy, from there he'd either run in behind and receive a pass or the ball would end up with Mahrez who would create something from nothing. They also had the 'busy' players in Albrighton and Okazaki permanently picking up 2nd balls. Was so effective and not sure will ever be replicated to that standard

You may be joking, but this is a slightly extreme version of what I said earlier on SOTC…you have to disrupt these sides.  You have to stop them getting into shape.

It’s actually okay to play direct into strikers who aren’t gonna win it / hold it up, if you are first to the dropping ball.  Leeds were great at that at AG.  How many times did we force Meslier to kick long, and Leeds win the ball off of Dickie headers back.  It’s how Warnock got Cardiff promoted.

I think you need to make it Germanic, how about hüffen-press?

I've said it before, but I don't understand why we're not using McCrorie aerially more. He's going to win most 50/50 balls against an opposition full back and we've got enough 'busy' players to pick up a second ball. The only difference is we're in the opposition half and not our own having played 16 Triangles, 48 passes and made about 4 yards before we end up losing it and having to battle for it back again.

I appreciate it's not the way Manning wants to play but feels like we're just cutting our nose to spite our face

I was sat in the lower Lansdown for the game not far from the dugouts.

Cardiff technical area was full of passion if it wasn’t their manager shouting support or instructions it was someone else

Compare our technical area, Manning was stood motionless with his hands in his pockets for most of the second half

Not seen such a lifeless person since LJ

So I also sit in lower Lansdown and body language was a real concern. Just stood hands in pockets for most of the game, so uninspiring.

We don't need somebody going mental for 90 minutes running up and down the touchline, but we do need some presence.
