Judging by the number of posts on this thread, it seems we have a large number of followers in South Gloucs.

Does the club have any stats (that it has published or is willing/able to share) regarding where supporters/season ticket holders live.

It would be interesting to see where the bulk of our support comes from, and how far and wide. Maybe it's far less obvious that some think.

I'm sure some years back the club published a map of the South West with red dots to signify where our Season ticket holders were from.

Haven't seen this for some time though.

One thing I have noticed, is that there’s an awful lot more wildlife North of Yate than what I saw around Pucklechurch and Shortwood.  A barn owl being a particular highlight

This area is rich and diverse in wildlife.

On LGV Estate towards Tanhouse Lane, there are a variety of songbirds,  finches etc that i have not seen for long time.  There was even a video doing the rounds on social media of Peregrine Falcons tucking in to a plump pigeon on someone's roof  (I initially thought this was BS - but it is plausible as PFs have been recently spotted at Chipping Sodbury Quarry).

Just north on limekiln Road- I have seen numerous Buzzards, the odd Red Kite, Deer.            ........ herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically across the plain....

I did my school work experience in the Architects department of South Glos Council. I was shown the at the time proposed plans for Yate. They went almost to the edge of Bath.

Later when I got my first job as an Architectural Technician, they were abolished... thankfully.

Think in the 70s there was a plan for Yate to become a town of circa 75k, this development would have been more southern - in to Wapley and Westerliegh and eventually its own junction for the M4.

However this was quickly shit canned as Yate was never designated as "New Town" status so didn't get the pound notes.

Another example of the Bristol area being under funded compared to similar conurbations.

And the Swan. Knocked down to expand the Tesco carpark.

Yep late 80s / early 90s, Yate was pretty lively with The Swan, The White Lion, The Lawns (which was a good pub in the summer), The Sandridge and of course Spirals.

I think you’re right about the divorce rate. I renember something about that too. I think it was down to blokes having to work away while the housewife’s got bored so played away

Yep lots of John Terry types in Yate

Not knocking Yate in general, but I think it has the most unattractive and soulless (I know) Wetherspoons I have ever been in.

    Wouldn't disagree in the slightest.

Yate shopping not a great place for pub - always feels better in proper pub building.

I know some West Brom fans who stopped off there before playing us last season who said the same thing.

I don't wish to argue you say in the early years there was problems the book was published around the 2000s, we aren't talking the early years,

Yes, when I say the early years I mean the 1970s - which was not a great decade for any town.

The book as you say was published circa 2000 to highlight the bad points of a town in a sarcastic, sensationalised writing style hence not based on fact, but opinion and humour.  Therefore it is not a reliable source.

I do not recall Yate as having the highest suicide rate, but do recall reading that the divorce rate was very high - in the 1970s.

I have recalled where I read about Yate having more sucides to population than any other place in the UK, it was the book crap towns

I believe in its early years it had its fair share of social issues due to thousands of houses being built and no amenities.

Suicides were high but not as bad as you say.

Divorce rates were off the scale,  Swinging parties were a common source of entertainment - with lots of young couples (new to the area - mainly Bristolians) eager for some target practice!

Youngsters had nothing to do except congregate in large groups, drink cider and act hard - not too dissimilar to other places.

It has improved over the years though, and as Silvio has pointed out it is a good place to live.

002, that was a real dive when I lived in Yate (by the Four Seasons) The Tern was sheer luxury by comparison !

002 did have quite a reputation.

I went in there about 2 years ago and it was still a sh!thole - as is the surrounding Abbotswood shops and flats.  All needs knocking down and redeveloping.

  10. 35 minutes ago, Silvio Dante said:

Both still there. The 002 long renamed the Abbotswood Inn. The Tern did close for a while but some well meaning local heroes(!) stopped it being redeveloped and it’s now open and doing well. The only pub I actually remember losing in the area is the Four Seasons/Sandridge

Bang on. I think the rep comes from people who haven’t been there, and from a couple of things like where it was put in the “Crap Towns” book decades ago, and referenced in the Half Man Half Biscuit song.

As you say though, loads there and a lot for everyone. I can be on a Victorian high street, a large shopping centre or open countryside all within 25 minutes walk of my house not including the parks, cinemas etc. There’s a reason that more houses are being built here.

    No.

Ah the Sandridge - I only ever drank in there once or twice.  Must have closed 93ish just as I was getting in to the Pub scene - only ever went in there with my brother and his lot (who were regulars).

Proper lads pub - that didn't take too kindly to strangers .

That’s it boys, I think we can claim the entirety of BS37

Easy - I am 47 now and my generation and below (in Yate) City was definitely a majority.

The generation above me were Gas though without a doubt.

This, 100%. I’d be spitting feathers at the council for allowing the developers to have acted how they have and the developers themselves. The play area on one end of Dowsell that’s been unfinished for a year, the flags by the old peoples home falling and just left there by the builders, the roads not being surfaced properly and the temporary fencing not being removed is just a very short list. And bizarrely having no bins on the estate is just weird.

You can do a 10k round LGV now. To only be served by one Sainsbury’s and having no pub, community facilities or schools is just criminal and does the community no favours

I'm glad there is no pub - bad enough with the Sainsburys so close that I can never run out of cider!

But all your points spot on and need to be actioned by the developers.

Lack of planning tbh. Originally there was supposed to be a hotel, pub, two primary schools and a couple of sports pitches. Some residents have been in for 4-5 years now and the only thing that’s been built is a Sainsbury’s local and a nursery. Pub/hotel now not coming.

I live close enough that I run round there a fair bit and if I was a resident who bought in 2021 I’d be mighty pissed off at the lack of anything bar houses - particularly the schools not having emerged as North Road is oversubscribed and all others are ages away.

So, not a tip. But definitely an example of why developers should have their feet held to the fire.

I live in LVG, my immediate area is nice with friendly neighbours.

There are areas of the estate which are already looking tired - but some how manage to own cars like BMW, Mercs etc )

Unfortunately Yate has always been associated with bad planning and this is just history repeating itself.

Just build 1000s houses and no amenities.

    As a local…

    - Yate and surrounding is now more City than Rovers. It’s been tipping that way for a few years but you invariably see far more red than blue both in terms of adult support and the kids playing junior football. There are a few outposts such as Mangotsfield and Pucklechurch that have a bit more of a blue tint, but Yate and Sodbury is definitely red

    - The size of Yate and Sodbury is now vast. The addition of Ladden Garden Village means that it’s a massive area. Schools are oversubscribed, finding a football pitch is a constant battle and the town centre is thriving. In fact, a study of “small town centres” post COVID found that Yate was the most resilient in the country. And not through pick and mix.

In fact, here’s the study. Note the low unemployment and large number of professionals in the area…

Yate named country's 'most resilient small town' https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-56443686

    - On that basis it’s a resource worth tapping. Even before you hit Winterbourne, Iron Acton, Frampton etc it’s going to be verging on 30,000 and demographically a lot of younger people.

    - I get the point about the train, but it would rely on “soccer specials” - and I don’t think the trains go to Parson Street! The park and ride is a big area and free whereas the train station is paid parking. They’re close to each other but are outskirts of the town (particularly in view of the development), so parking is important. On that basis I think the P&R option makes sense

It’s not a bad idea. Definitely is being floated as it’s an election year but why would the club not want to support any idea that gets fans in from a highly populated, young, professional area…

    More than 30 k population.

A good chunk of South Yate and The Birds Estate (Sodbury) are in the parish of Doddington so don't get included in Yate's population stats.

Wow a tongue in cheek response to BCR and the mutants of Yate unite 🤣

The town centre is a big success story and the residents love it.

Glad to hear it's more red than blue these days...

I think us Yate boys are coming over a little defensive!

Seriously though kid - you got it coming,  as I've  just shot my "diss track" which will be on you tube later!

Ah, Claire Young. You can tell we're in a GE year.

Surely there won't be the required interest in this anyway given Yate is full of gasheads, gypsies, and shops that still have pick n mix?

Gypsies and fairground yes but not gasheads.

Agree , lots of BS in those books.

Chip shop reviews? - hope he gets battered.

I chatted to some spurs lads years ago who said a few of them joined the show as well! I think it was a london day out! Said city were absolutely crazy that day and was one of the most scary away games. Slightly different now

I didn't go to this game but knew a few lads that went and said it kicked right off.

Also remember reading in one of Eddy Brimsons books (either "Everywhere we go" or "Capital Punishment") that there were Chelsea, Tottenham and Millwall there which i thought sounded like bollocks at the time (these books must be 20 - 25 years old.)

Book said the Charlton b mob (and co) lot were let out and had to face hundreds of City who were going effing mental!

Does this bring back memories of Christmas/birthday wish lists?

As I remember it was a bit too bouncy on Oldbury Court school playground, , but stung like mad if it caught your thigh ( we all wore short trousers in those days!) on a cold day.

Also remember trying to mend with a hot knife to weld the plastic together after a puncture on the rose bushes around the play ground.

Blimey that brings back some memories!

Can still hear the ping sound of the ball when bounced on concrete - and like you say the sting of it, if it hit your thigh.

Would have been approx 1985 - me with my Chris Waddle haircut playing in a local fierce street derby- Wyvern Avenue v Heron Close (Calne).  After losing I kicked the ball in the River and watched the older Heron Close lads fishing it out.

Later that day (still pissed off) I kicked the same ball in to the road and the Chip Van ran over it - my god that made a noise, needless to say I had to do a runner!

I don’t want to take the piss if he has some sort of neurological disorder, but is it me or does he struggle to string a sentence together?

The real world might have done him some good.

He does struggle with speaking - it's always an uncomfortable watch.

As we already know he is way out of his depth and not a good representation for for a Championship Football Cluball.

    Shame on you Steve...

  21. What a player, what a man, what an ambassador for Football.

I am 46 so missed watching his career, though the clips I have seen of him from the past and the charity games from his later years (well in to his late 60s) what a player!!.

    I'll never forget watching Jack present an award to Bobby on Sports Personality Of The Year (circa 2010 I would guess) he (Jack) very emotionally and proudly finished off his speech with;

"Our kid - the greatest footballer there ever was" .

    RIP legend.

Very glad you mentioned this @City37

If the away fans had the SS or Dolman that would have the best acoustics.  Dolman B block in the late 80's and 90's was pumping.

Block B in the early 90s was great - as a youngster I can remember looking up to see all the lads in there giving it some ... and them clattering the wooden chairs.

There used to be some proper characters in the Dolman.

Think I spent most of the time watching the crowd and not the game.
