  1. What a player, what a man, what an ambassador for Football.

I am 46 so missed watching his career, though the clips I have seen of him from the past and the charity games from his later years (well in to his late 60s) what a player!!.

    I'll never forget watching Jack present an award to Bobby on Sports Personality Of The Year (circa 2010 I would guess) he (Jack) very emotionally and proudly finished off his speech with;

"Our kid - the greatest footballer there ever was" .

    RIP legend.

Very glad you mentioned this @City37

If the away fans had the SS or Dolman that would have the best acoustics.  Dolman B block in the late 80's and 90's was pumping.

Block B in the early 90s was great - as a youngster I can remember looking up to see all the lads in there giving it some ... and them clattering the wooden chairs.

There used to be some proper characters in the Dolman.

Think I spent most of the time watching the crowd and not the game.

The acoustics thing is so overstated. Were the acoustics a problem when Korey’s winner hit the net?

Having the singing section in the corner between the two most vocal stands is perfectly adequate to make large amounts of noise. The corner should even give a megaphone effect, compared to being in the middle of a stand with open sides, if we ARE going to obsess about acoustics. The main reason the atmosphere is so flat is because we’ve had very few games that have really mattered since the stadium was redeveloped. Generally we’ve played fairly inconsequential mid table games. We haven’t had a play off game, a must-win relegation decider or a Bristol derby. We’ve had little to get excited about. And on the odd occasion when we have, the atmosphere has been excellent.

Putting fans in the Atyeo will just disperse our vocal support over a wider area.

Also, we’re kidding ourselves if we think the Atyeo was “our kop”. That’s a bit of an embarrassing comparison frankly. It wasn’t even our traditional home end.

We need to stop pretending the only reason Ashton Gate isn’t like the Istanbul derby every week is because of the acoustics or the layout of the ground. It’s a nonsense.

    Spot on.

I thought the Bristol Arena was 10/12,000 , but TBH I've kind of lost interest as it's turned into a farce.

The planned arena for Temple Meads was this size until scrapped by Marv.

The YTL Arena at Filton is now planning for 19,000 seats - making it the the 3rd / 4th largest in the country.

That's if it is ever built - this is constantly being delayed and rumours are that YTL will eventually claim it is unviable - anybody else heard this?

Have read it on Skyscrapercity forum and someone I was chatting to recently.

  5. First thoughts are a totally underwhelming career for a player with much promise and potential.

Second thoughts - was he really that good?

What was his position? Not enough stature for a striker.  Not enough work rate for a winger.

His early call up to the senior England squad did him no favours with excess smoke blown up his arse.

His character appears too nice and too content - not dynamic or hungry enough to be a top player.

Fair play to him though - he has been paid well.

@ExiledAjax thanks for this. Very interesting.

Is the parent company at the top Pula based in Bermuda? I'm sure there is a Pula Ltd based over there.

Regards Steve's other money making entities, I'm sure that Esteban Ltd will stand to make a small fortune from the sporting village (plus hotel and flats) scheme and of course the housing development at Longmoor Village.

This gas gone very quiet - anybody know the latest on this..  start dates... phasing etc.

Yate would probably a good place for them to pitch up the circus .  It’s got a station, it’s expanding massively, is relatively easy to get to from their ever diminishing heartlands, there’s provision for a stadium in the South Glos local plan and it’s miles away from Bristol.

Not welcome here, definitely a dying breed - thankfully.

Pretty sure John was wicket-keeper / batsman for Chipping Sodbury, and if it’s him, the whole family are from Yate / C.S. area.

Yep, used to live next door to them.

    Real sporting mad family.

John was at Cardiff City (Goalkeeper) and used to room with Christian Roberts.

Good luck John - certainly no easy job there.

At the third time of asking, I finally got to see a game at the San Mames stadium. Over the last 5 years or so, I have gone to Bilbao for a Soul weekend. First time, it was an International break. 2nd time, they were away. Then we missed one year, and annoyingly the local Derby. This year I finally managed to get to see a game.
You could see scarves and shirts appearing around lunchtime, though they don't go "on it" , like it would be over here. Kids and families started showing up around the 'Old Town' in the bars and Cafés. Around 7pm we went to the Stadium, lots of bars surround the Ground and the atmosphere was good. My Brother in Law managed to get an extra ticket for my Wife, just before Kick Off (which she didn't appreciate) at much less than the €200 they wanted on the website.
The pre match was good, the light show and crowd singing what I imagine a Bask related song. Really easy getting in and around the Stadium, the Toilets were all cubicles and yet quicker than the Gate (less people on the piss I guess). I'd love to know what the guys around me were saying to me, but I don't speak Spanish, let alone Bask.
The Game was OK, but a side on their best start in an age, against a side struggling a bit, added to an early goal and no away fans meant the atmosphere lacked the passion or jeopardy you might get. While not a walk over, it was a fairly straight forward win. Though somehow, me , my Bother in Law and my mate , all missed a Goal being disallowed by VAR. Iker Muniain pretty much ran the show, but they didn't have to push themselves too much.
Interesting that the team went to the fans in the rail seats after the game, not sure if they do that every game.
It was my first game abroad, without City involvement, and I loved the experience. I hope to get the chance again soon.

I would say, if you fancy a bit of Football tourism, Bilbao is a great place to try. Direct flights, fantastic City , lovely Stadium and Tickets available.

Good post and fair play - you obviousley enjoyed your experience.

They were the Spanish club I always looked out for (when Ander Herrera played them for prior to joining Man Utd) although have now lost interest the Spanish league.

Stadium looks awesome and I've heard the City is great.

With a bit more thought and less haste, by turning the pitch through 90 degrees with the Dolman as a behind the goal with 7,000 seats, Ashton Vale would have fitted easily into the space of the area of existing stadium plus the land where the new arena, flats, car parking etc are planned.

    Benefit of hindsight.

Lost far too much time with Ashton Vale and needed a new stadium.

Probably was discussed, however don't think Lansdown owned all necassary land at this point (plus businesses still trading)

Where would have played during construction? .... Memorial ?

In an ideal world though - would have been good.

Match and Roy of the Rovers for me.  No surprise to you all, but the “stats” stuff in Match was what differentiated it from Shoot. Once a geek, always a geek.

Shoot , Match and Roy of of the Rovers were the highlight of the week for me - along with watching teletext for score updates (waiting for the pages to change).

Roy of the Rovers was great - loved Billy's boots and Hotshot Hamish & Mighty Mouse.

Jesus how the world has changed.

Long term they are a run of the mill big club like Aston Villa.

They struck lucky in the mid 90s by having half a dozen top class youth players come through at the same time as their appointing a decent manager.

This made them pretty much unstoppable for a dozen years.

Then that core of the team started to retire and Ferguson, seeing this and that the whole team now needed a rebuild, sensibly stepped down.

The Glazers want to keep taking money out of the club rather than pushing it on to compete with Man City so the future will be like the present: hoping each season to try to nab sixth or seventh to get into Europe.

All of those plastic fans who started to support Man Utd in the 90s are going to have few highlights in the future.

And the manager's office will have a revolving door installed as nobody can make them a top three team on the Glazers' budget.

Man Utd not comparable to Aston Villa in any way - a huge difference in history, size, fanbase and expectations.

I'm not sure the Youth Team (class of 92) can be described as lucky as they were nurtured, coached and blended in to first team with experienced pros perfectly by AF.  Certainly not a regular occurrence by any means but the vision by AF, and balls to move on big names like Hughes, Ince and Kanchelskis was massive.

Alex Ferguson was ready to stand down anyway due to the years he had put in and his age (also wanted to spend more time with his wife).

Not sure how old you are - but Man Utd have always attracted masses of new fans (all over the world) - even during the 80s when they only won the FA Cup - and Liverpool dominated our game.

It is true that the Glazers have taken out huge amounts of money out of the club but have still spent massive in the transfer market and currently have the biggest wage bill in world football.

Unfortunately they have squandered alot of this - if you consider circa £180 million on Maguire, Wan Bissaka and Fred and all three just look plain terrible.

Best part of £90 million each on Pogba and Lukaku and couldn't get a tune out of either.

Best part of £115 million on Van de Beek and Sancho (who both look quality) and Ole can't find a place in his team.

The real issue for United is Woodward who has obviously done well on commercial deals for the club but his football decisions have been awful.

bit like the others that are there at the moment.

Correct - and previousley Nige had endorsed Kieth and Paul but their departure had suggested some tension/fallout.

Coupled with the lack of application from the players would suggest an  unhappy camp.

Agree with your earlier post that all very strange going-ons at the gate.

I am not convinced that covid is the real issue here (not disputing that he has not had covid) but think there are other issues (all gut feeling).

Something just does not feel right and I think he'll be gone this/next week.

Worth noting that I have been on the Malbec so may come over as a drama queen!
