  1. Just as a rider on this one, Huddersfield manager claiming they got a letter from PGMOL that the decision was wrong. Surprised tbh as it looks one of those 50/50s

I've got mixed views on this.

On the one hand, I suspect most managers - including in the Championship, League One and League Two - regard replays as a bit of a pain in the arse and there are probably a lot of fans who'd appreciate getting a result on the day.

On the other hand, replays are a fantastic income generator for small clubs and there's a certain magic in smaller teams forcing major sides to a draw and an extra game - even if they ultimately lose in the replay. I feel like the main result of this will be more bigger clubs going through to the later stages and less opportunities for smaller clubs to get a money-spinning second fixture.

Agree about the comment it will cost clubs the ‘money spinner’ replay. Not so sure it will lead to more bigger teams going through. It’s not uncommon for smaller clubs to get a replay they lose. If instead of that it’s a more evenly balanced penalty shoot out I would expect more bigger teams to go out. Need to hold them once, not twice?

I'm guessing Liam shouted back there was no need to be so cross with him, moderate your behaviours and take a bit of the emotion out of it..............

…and told him he needed less time on the grass…

Just watched their title clincher, 5-0 vs bremen…  absolutely stunning football, 40 odd game’s unbeaten, wirtz is a world star and got a hat trick,, god help the rest of us if the Germans play like this in the euros!

The real question, is does Kane need to move if he wants to see titles…

Doesn’t make him right just because he’s a ex pro . Hes sliding in to block the cross it’s hit his arm from about 2 yards away. In situations like this you have to ask yourself if you’d be pissed off it’s that’s given against us , because I would

Totally agree in the sense I would too, and as a Huddersfield fan given league position and the timing of it, I would be fuming. It is ball to hand, and then it’s a debate about is the arm in an unnatural position, which is very marginal.

Having said all that, I would be also fuming at the current laws which seem a mess, are too harsh in my view, and come down to very fine line subjective interpretation. It’s a call that is most likely not overturned by VAR whatever way the ref calls it as a clear and obvious error. Unlucky to get given and equally unlucky if not given on us, as it seems a bit of a coin toss on these kind of ones at the moment.

xG is not best used to say whether we should/shouldn't have got certain results. But. I do use it like that as by doing that I can look back at the longer terms trend. It's also the best measure of "luck" that I know of. With those caveats in place, here is what I have for the past 12 games.

xG suggests that for the past 5 games, 6 points would have been "par" based on chance creation. We've received 11.

For the preceding 5 that you identify, it's again 6 points for "par". We actually took 3.

So for me, yes that suggests that the past 5 have seen us receive an element of fortune that we didn't get in those 5.

Overall it's a 17 point haul from 11 games where as my xG measure suggests 12 would be what we'd get on average based on the chances created.

Interesting analysis. A good mix over the 12 games of teams sprinkled throughout the league.

As you say, dangerous to rely on xG to say ‘this is what the result of any one game should have been’, but it does provide an indicator over a decent period. Although some are marginal, is interesting that in only 3 out of 12 do we have a positive xG. Also it does confirm a nagging doubt in the back of my mind when our current very good position in the recent form table gets highlighted that  it is not really matching what I am seeing in the round. It’s not that we are bad recently as such, but that we are not either in a really purple patch of form where we are looking like we are great.

Reminds me of those runs we would get under LJ were results were good for half a dozen games or so, but the evidence of my own eyes was that we were getting the rub of the green a little, and that sooner or later we would revert to our mean, which generally we did.
