I haven’t read everything that’s been written on this aspect of the story, so apologies if this has already been covered, but I’m not clear whether this was a flight being provided by a properly registered and regulated commercial operator, albeit on a private charter basis, or just an arrangement with some bloke with a private pilot’s licence and a single engined plane. If it’s the latter then I agree it does seem a strange thing to do. Experienced pilot or not, I’m pretty sure air accident statistics would show you are safer flying with a commercial operator. I have been on short flights in light aircraft on numerous occasions just for fun, and enjoyed it, but I’m buggered if I’d undertake something like this. You just feel so sorry for the poor sod: like others I have been surprised at my own reactions and just how upsetting I’ve found it. Very, very sad.

Sure everything will come out in the fullness of time regarding how and by whom the flight was arranged.

The whole thing just seems very odd - IFR flight over water in the dark in a single engine, in conditions where icing is likely to be present. Pretty much everything you’d want to avoid, and when it was so avoidable, it seems incredible that those risks were taken when a (not difficult) commercial alternative was available.

  2. Speculation online that the pilot was vastly experienced with 100+ single engine channel crossings.

What I can’t fathom is why not fly commercial. At night in the middle of winter, it just seems such an unnecessary risk. You can fly through AMS and be in Cardiff in 4 hours.

Don't get me wrong, I've used it a thousand times on twitter, but from the official account? Leave it to the fans

Agreed. Between this and acting like somebody died when our biggest rival took our prized asset, we don’t half make ourselves look ******* tinpot at times.

Fair enough. I don’t think personally the reaction (the sensible ones anyway) has been down to that one game, more the run we’ve been on since the start of 2018 as a whole. But we won tonight, a great 3 points whichever way you want to look at it, and let’s hope it kick starts a good run now.

I definitley get that. But I think people need to get over it and judge this season on it’s own merits. If after 10-15 games we’re really struggling questions rightfully need to be asked but a bit premature to be all doom and gloom after 3 games.

Fingers crossed this gives us some confidence going into what will be a very tough game on Saturday.

My point is that it has always been thus. Boro have had far more better players than us for years now. Yet we competed. In fact we had a bloody good record against them. But it doesn’t suit the narrative to remember that.

I’m not disputing any of that. Simply saying that the reaction to losing one game this season, against one of the top few clubs in the league, was massively over the top, IMO.

“...a very good manager” .....are you sure you weren’t one of the many on here slagging off Pulis over the years?!

I was 13 when he managed us so I’m a bit young for the hate that others have for him, I only have vague recollections of him managing us, I didn’t get my first season ticket til a couple of years later.

He did a great job at Stoke and has made a flying start at Boro. I think he has all the nous required to swiftly get Boro back to where they think they belong.

They had a big squad on big wages before. We still had a fantastic record against them. They were there or thereabouts last season. Taking one of the play off spots that we royally ballsed up!

My point is that our record over the last few years against them means absolutely nothing in respect of the gulf - nay, chasm - of class between the respective playing squads. You’re talking about a team where pretty much every single first teamer walks into ours. A team who’s front two cost what we spend in 2 or 3 windows let alone on 2 or 3 players.

They are a very very strong side and have inflicted our only defeat of the season.

I stand firmly behind my statement that the reaction to the opening 3 games has been ludicrously over the top.

Am I saying we’re a great team? Absolutely not. I think we look every bit a mid table side. But as a mid table wage payer, with a mid table squad and a mid table manager that’s pretty much in line with my expectations!

It’s about looking a bit deeper and looking ahead

I think there’s been some excellent posts observations and discusssions but there’s some who if it isn’t all happy happy happy don’t seem to be able to cope

I fail to understand your need after a  3-0 win to start making your original comment

    Too often

I’m far from ‘all happy clappy’ and am not hesitant about criticising players and manager.

My comment was meant to actually make people think a bit about whether their knee jerk ‘everything’s awful’ reaction to one defeat in 3 was a tad OTT on reflection.

    Hey ho.

Far from a great performance against a very poor team....but a very welcome victory....don’t think there’s been much been much talk of a ‘crisis’ prior to this game, just understandable frustration....no room for smugness just yet though...

Really?! Reading this forum in recent days you'd think we were relegated already, reaction to one loss - against a top, top side - has been frankly ridiculous.

    I wouldn’t get too carried away ( or smug ) 86

The points and result tonight will help us undoubtedly and there were some positive individual performances

But we will need it to kick start us in confidence terms

Because playing like that we won’t be winning too many games

A very welcome and maybe vital 3 points , but Lets see how we react from here

Nothing to do with being smug Bob. But the reaction to 3 games (of which we lost 1, to one of the division's true heavyweights) has been so enormously over the top.
