Exactly. It's an odd phenomenon, but the experience of 'shared loss' somehow binds us all closer together under the 'signifier' of Bristol City fan. The more we ask what @spudskidoes in the thread title, the more we have to peel back the idea that supporting a football club is somehow natural. It IS a choice, but the sociocultural reality we're surrounded by tacitly forces it upon us. I can't just stop supporting City, and neither can you. The burgenoing area of football anthropology/sociology has some really interesting things to say about why it is we continue to spend such a large proportion of our income on STs, despite the 'product' being crap.
