  4. Millwall at the Gate. They are searching for their first away win of the season. Rowett’s team have only scored two goals while playing away from home - Jake Cooper against Blackburn Rovers and Zian Flemming away to Rotherham. The Lions have picked up four points from their last six games since changing to a 4-2-3-1 formation, but they remain winless on the road since the start of March. Head to head we have won 37, lost 34 and drawn 32. Last season we won at our place And lost at theirs Chairman John Berylson’s financial backing has been vital to Millwall since 2007. He’s an American businessman and founder of Chestnut Hill Ventures LLC. He is a formerly an active US Marine and a passionate fan of the Boston Red Sox. They are managed by Gary Rowett who took charge In October 2019. As a player, he was a defender, and played for Everton, Derby County, Leicester City, Charlton Athletic, Cambridge United, Blackpool, Birmingham City and Burton Albion. His professional career ended in 2004, through a knee injury. In July 2021 Benik Afobe rejoined Millwall on a season-long loan deal eight years after his previous loan spell at the club. Afobe scored 13 goals in 41 appearances for the Lions as they missed out on a play-off spot on the final day of the season, finishing in 9th. Following the success of his loan spell with the club in the 2021–22 season, Afobe joined the club on a permanent one-year deal for an undisclosed fee on 28 June 2022. My neighbour is a die-hard Millwall fan and reckons (of course he might just be winding me up) since changing their style of play they are starting to look much better and being more effective, he added that Zian Flemming was starting to find his feet and looking a real threat. The Lions have certainly looked rejuvenated since switching to a back four, naming the same lineup for consecutive games and picking up four points. We should note that no team in the Championship has scored more league goals from corners, free-kicks and throw-ins (eight). Officials: Referee Gavin Ward, assisted by Adam Crysell and Bhupinder Gill with Andy Woolmer as the fourth official. Millwall musings From 1964 to January 1967, Millwall went on a record unbeaten home run of 59 matches without defeat (W43, D16). The Lions scored 112 goals and kept 35 clean sheets during that period. Their biggest ever victory was a 9-1 Division 3S win over Torquay United in September 1927. There are three teams that the Lions have never beaten in the Championship – Yeovil Town, Southampton and Rotherham United. Seven windmills once stood on the western side of the Isle of Dogs, helping to give this part of the island the name ‘Millwall’. The ‘wall’ was in fact a great bank of earth and stones, perhaps dating back to Roman times and certainly in use by the early Middle Ages. This bank of earth kept the river from flooding the island at high tide, allowing the surrounding land to be cultivated for farmland. The club's ground The Den doubled as The Dragons Lair, home ground of fictional team Harchester United in the television series Dream Team. It also appeared in episodes of the shows The Bill and Primeval. Frank Fielding joined them in 2019 when he left us but only made one appearance before going to Stoke on a short-term contract. Well known fans include, Danny Baker, Sir Daniel Day-Lewis, Andy Fordham, David Haye, Lord Ouseley and Gary Oldman. Marvin Elliott came through their academy he appeared 144 times for Millwall before joining us in 2007 (he departed BCFC in 2014) scoring 25 goals in 242 appearances. He was named as a member of PFA team of the year in 2008. Fellow-Reds enjoy the game and let’s make lots of noise as we cheer the City to three more points, COYR.

  9. Oh dear, bad news indeed. Spotted this on FB Hi City fans, Tomorrow night for the Preston game, we will be outside the Rising Sun Pub, Ashton Gate, a 2 minute walk from the ground, selling our award winning hot cornish pasties & sausage rolls. With prices from £2. We will be outside the pub from 6:30pm, if you fancy grabbing something nice and hot on the way to the ground.
  10. Preston North End at Ashton Gate under the lights. This game was of course postponed on 10 September https://www.bbc.com/sport/62846756 Our highest ever attendance was 43,335 against PNE on 16 February 1935. So far this season they’ve got 19 points having recorded seven draws (five being 0-0 draws), four wins and two defeats (including against Brum) they have scored seven (three of those last time out) and conceded only six (two in their last game)! So, we are up against the best defence in all four divisions. They will be full of confidence following Saturdays win at Carrow Road. Troy Parrott grabbed a late winner against the Canaries to add to an Emil Riis double as they scored more than once in the Championship for the first time this season in a thrilling comeback victory. The Canaries' nine-game league unbeaten run did not look under threat as they went ahead after just two minutes. Preston recovered from conceding their first away league goal this term to claim all three points. In stark contrast we’ve taken a point from the last 15 available and Nigel Pearson said in his post-match press conference, following the 3-0 away defeat to Birmingham City ‘It was awful – there is no defence for that performance today. It’s not acceptable. There’s no defence for us to give three points away in that fashion.’ It was a return to the woeful City of last season and a far cry from some of our performances earlier this season. NP pre-match thoughts: Mark Sykes presser: For history buffs here is the full nine yards: https://www.pnefc.net/club/club-history/ For the rest here are the headlines: Founded 1880 Founder Member of the English Football League 1888 League Champions 1889, 1890 FA Cup Winners 1889, 1938 War Cup Winners 1941 FA Cup Finalists 1888, 1922, 1937, 1954, 1964 Lancashire Cup Winners 1887, 1893, 1895, 1900, 1996 Division One Runners-up 1891, 1892, 1893, 1906, 1953, 1958 Division Two Champions 1904, 1913, 1951, 2000 Division Three Champions 1971, 1996 Since the untimely death of Mr Trevor Hemmings, last October, there have been a number of rumours with regard to a potential change in the ownership of the club. However, PNE remain in the ownership of the Hemmings family: https://www.pnefc.net/news/2022/april/club-update-takeover-speculation/ According to the Sunday Times Rich List in 2021, Hemmings was worth £1.115 billion. There is also a Jersey connection as Trevor Hemmings purchased the site of the former Pontins holiday camp at Plemont Bay in Jersey in 2005. He submitted several plans to redevelop the site for housing, but there followed a long campaign against the development led by the National Trust for Jersey. Ultimately in 2014 the NTJ purchased the site from Hemmings for £7.15m, with £3.6m provided by the States of Jersey - as a Jersey tax payer I reckon that means I made a contribution! https://www.theislandwiki.org/index.php/Plemont_Holiday_Camp Ryan Lowe has managed them since 2021, here’s an interesting insight into his style of management: https://breakingthelines.com/manager-analysis/an-analysis-on-ryan-lowes-managerial-style/ They added a number of players early in the last window without shelling out much: Freddie Woodman (undisclosed, Newcastle United) David Cornell (free, Peterborough United) Robbie Brady (free, Bournemouth) Ben Woodburn (free, Liverpool) Troy Parrott (loan, Tottenham Hotspur) Alvaro Fernandez (loan, Manchester United) https://www.lancs.live/sport/football/transfer-news/ryan-lowe-preston-north-end-24906940 They were rumored to want Nahki Wells but apparently were not willing to pay a transfer fee to sign him this summer. Greg Cunningham is still with them, he originally signed from us in 2015 he then went to Cardiff and then on loan to Blackburn before rejoining PNE. In terms of other ex-City players both Bailey Wright and Josh Brownhill played for them. Last season we drew home and away against them: Head to head record; we’ve won 27, lost 34 and drawn 34, over recent times they are considered to be one of our bogey teams. The last 18 league games have seen the Lilywhites winning nine, with eight draws and just one City win. The the 2-1 home defeat by Preston in 2016 proved to be Steve Cotterill’s last match in charge and the 5-0 thrashing at Deepdale in 2017 was one of LJs worst defeats. Central defender Jordan Storey, who has been an ever present this season, is suspended having picked up a fifth booking at the weekend. Troy Parrott has a hamstring injury that will almost certainly rule him out of the game. We will be without Kal Naismith and Matty James. While Stefan Bajic may have fast-tracked himself into squad after impressing with the Under-21s. Three celebrities that supposedly support the club. Andrew Flintoff - the first name on the list is probably the most well-known PNE supporter. The former cricketer is now often gracing our TV screens. Wade Barrett (Stu Bennett) - perhaps one of the more random supporters of an English football team is Stu Bennett, otherwise known as the wrestler Wade Barrett. It’s well-known that he is originally from England having since gone over to the USA to wrestle for WWE but he was actually born in South Ribble, meaning he has close ties to North End. Mark Lawrenson - obviously a famous name in the football world, not only did he play for the club back in the 70s but he supports Preston too. Officials: Referee Leigh Doughty, assisted by Craig Taylor and Greg Read, the fourth official is Keith Stroud. Louis Carey will be the Robins TV guest commentator which is available to both domestic and international viewers. It is not on the red button.

  13. Great write up as always Ole, if ‘Ull beat ‘Uddersfield tomorrow we will be 19th in the table, we had better decide to turn up pdq!
  14. Seeing With The Heart "The man doesn’t know that there is a snake underneath. The woman doesn’t know that there is a stone crushing the man. The woman thinks: “I am going to fall! And I can’t climb because the snake is going to bite me. Why can’t the man use a little more strength and pull me up!” The man thinks: “I am in so much pain! Yet I’m still pulling you as much as I can. Why don’t you try and climb a little harder!?” The moral: You can’t see the pressure the other person is under, and the other person can’t see the pain you’re in. This is life. Whether it’s with work, family, feelings or friends, we should try to understand each other. Learn to think differently, perhaps more clearly and communicate better. A little thought and patience goes a long way."

  16. He was blunt in his post-match reflections, saying: “It was awful – there is no defence for that performance today. It’s not acceptable. There’s no defence for us to give three points away in that fashion.“ https://youtu.be/6DYColOc4ZM
  17. Thoughts are with each and everyone of our traveling fans today, City were woeful in the first half and only marginally better in the second half. Safe journey everyone and well done on your brilliant support today, even though the team gave you nothing to cheer!
  18. First half reflections A very poor half and a shocking start from us. We gave away a sloppy corner (with Wells ‘helping’ out the defence) after just three minutes and Trusty simply wanted the ball more, from the set piece, than our three defenders who were simply blown away by his header. Three minutes later Bents maked a vital save when one on one with Chong. Brum very much on the front foot and playing forwards quickly. In the opening phases they simply looked more up for it than us. On sixteen minutes one direct header (from Bents kick) let Hogan in and we managed to smoother his attempt on goal. We have looked fragmented throughout with no effective link up play. Atkinson attempted a few dribbles and through balls but they have come to nothing. On 21 minutes HNH summed it up with a hopeless lofted ball to nobody when on the edge of their box. Then on 24 minutes NW played a forward ball to JD in the attacking third and it ended up back with Bentley! We conceded another sloppy corner on 28 minutes, this time Bents punched the resulting kick clear. On 37 minutes we actually won a corner, which resulted in HNM passing back to Bents! They then got a carbon copy second on 43 minutes when again Trusty out-muscled our defence from a long, lofted set play. Hugely frustrating to watch, especially given our performances earlier this campaign. Nobody in a red shirt has offered anything of note. If there is any positive from that half it’s that we are only losing by two goals. NP will hopefully shake them up at half time and likely make changes. Robins TV will certainly have their work cut out when seeking any City highlights from that half. Although according to the stats we’ve had more of the ball we’ve registered no shots and just one corner. It has sadly looked very much like a City team from this time last year.
  19. It was from info I saw at the start of the season Red-Al, a mileage chart that had been produced showing distances to all away grounds. COYR!
