    Box entries

Wish I could forget. Goal entries are what count. Nothing more desperate than a manager who has lost citing the number of box entries.

Poch tried it recently, citing Chelsea apparently underperformed their xg. If he'd have just said 'we're creating enough chances, just need to put them away' he would have come across much better imo

Aggressive high press? Doesn't have the same ring I'll grant you!

  3. I remember 'in the hole' or 'the makelele role' - now I guess a 10 or a 6? Or a 'cam' and a 'dm' for the fifa generation?

I liked defining player roles according the the player that made it famous. Perhaps now the game is more structured there is less freedom for those individuals to carve out a role of their own? Teams built around a system or a style (or, heaven forbid, an 'identity'!) rather than particular players.

LJ had his own terminology 'busy bees' etc which was a bit annoying in s different way, but at least it was original. In Manning we hwbe somebody fluent in the language of coaching newspeak. does not appeal to me!

  4. Cracking goals against Scunthorpe! Trundle also got one at Norwich in a 3-1 (?) win if memory serves.

Probably not the signing we needed in hindsight, and maybe a few years too late for him to step up to that level.l ad well. Played his part nonetheless.

  5. Good memories. Watched the away leg on sky - as Noble shaped to shoot my Dad yelled, "not from there!" only to see if fly in. Scenes of unbridled joy across the living room.

As you can imagine, we then said "not from there" every time somebody looked like they might shoot from the edge of the box just in case they were the magic words.

Home leg was on my 16th birthday. Had GCSE exams the next morning. As @Reigate Red says it turned on the penalty miss - as he stepped up it looked like our season was over but after that we all started to believe.

Partly it was being young I guess but I had such faith in that team - having followed us through a long 7 or 8 years in league one playing the likes of Port Vale, Oldham and Chesterfield every year I thought our time had finally come - Johnson Snr could do no wrong, Carey was an inspirational leader, Elliott was an absolute beast, Trundle was a maverick genius etc. Looking back I might have got a bit carried away...! But it was still a team to be proud of.

  6. He scored 15 goals in a season, including a hattrick in a game, the third of which was a rabona volley. Some players don't do that in their entire career! Don't think that is what anyone would expect of a player desribed as a "head it and kick it" merchant?

No one is claiming he's as good as Messi. Or even a stylish centre back like Webster proved to be. He had limitations.

(I guess a rabona volley does technically fit the definition of kicking it...maybe that's what he means?? 🤦‍♂️ )

Heading it and kicking it is most of football, after all

  7. Every year in the championship, 11 teams chase for promotion or the play offs. 11 teams battle against relegation. And then there's Preston and Bristol city.

Anyone know the last time we scored direct from a free kick? Micky Bell?

Seem to recall Paterson scoring one - in off the bar? Maybe Brownhill as well? Perhaps Reid?

My favourite goal from a free kick was New Years day against Cambridge, maybe 2001 or 2002? I think we won 5-1. Their keeper Perez was sent off for handling the ball outside the box. Somebody (Beadle?) flicked it up from the indirect free kick to Tinnion who controlled it and whacked it in on the volley.

Wells been lively since he came on.

I think the booing was a culmination of the stops/pass backwards/slow performance from the whole team today (complete contrast to the much improved performances recently when we've stopped playing Mannings horribly boring style). - I don't think the booing was just because of that 1 moment or aimed personally at Pring.

Agree. Though that incident was an interesting one because everyone could see the backpass coming, and we're shouting for him not to do it. He appeared to then second guess it and look for an option, but not seeing one, did it anyway. (From where I sat that's what it looked like anyway). Quite a few comical 'no, no, noooo's from where I was sitting (including me).

Its symptomtic of a bigger issue though. LM has even admitted himself the possibility of over-coaching, overloading with information. Seems to lead to players making bizarre decisions. (Unless they have the vision and decision making skills of an Iniesta!)

Just bizarre not to put the ball back in the box when everyone is up for a corner. It's hardly route one football to ping it back in from a set piece.

Since when does getting the ball kicked in your stomach warrant stopping the game and the ball being returned to you from the opposition for you to to restart the game unopposed?? ******* joke

She clearly wasn't looking at who had the ball when she stopped play. But one of her assistants should have been able to help her out. Bizarre moment that.

  11. First half was very poor. They were sharp and up for it, we weren't. Either the system wasn't working, or the wrong players in the wrong roles due to absence of Vyner and Dickie. Maybe a bit of both. Individuals like sykes and Williams just didn't look up for it or showed very poor quality on a few occasions.

Second half we came out with more intensity which they all do deserve a bit of credit for. So many first halves like that this season have been followed up by worse second halves! So credit that they came out with a bit more gusto and you could see them trying to fire one another up.

We were still a bit slow with the final ball, or hesitant to shoot. Their goal came after our best spell so credit to us for sticking at it. I had a pretty good view of the penalty incident - hit an srm but at pretty close range. I'm always surprised when we get a penalty (!), but wasn't surprised that she gave it and she was very fussy and gave a lot of soft fouls all afternoon. Didn't let much go.

Pleased that we showed a bit of fight and got a goal at the end and keep the mini unbeaten run going. First half performance was really very poor and it's obviously a concern that we are still seeing that kind of performance - as somebody above said, its not a good ST renewal advert! But at least we got something out of the game, even if Huddersfield will feel hard done by

Think half the problem is the lack of movement up front. James seemed to be waving his hands suggesting he had no one to play forward to.

Yep. Think the two behind Tommy have to work harder to find space and show better first touch when they get it played in. and Sykes need to be more direct when he gets the ball.

All pretty listless so fat. Frustrating. We are rotating the starting 11 so no excuse of tiredness for me. Just not at it.
