Anyone know the last time we scored direct from a free kick? Micky Bell?

Seem to recall Paterson scoring one - in off the bar? Maybe Brownhill as well? Perhaps Reid?

My favourite goal from a free kick was New Years day against Cambridge, maybe 2001 or 2002? I think we won 5-1. Their keeper Perez was sent off for handling the ball outside the box. Somebody (Beadle?) flicked it up from the indirect free kick to Tinnion who controlled it and whacked it in on the volley.

Wells been lively since he came on.

I think the booing was a culmination of the stops/pass backwards/slow performance from the whole team today (complete contrast to the much improved performances recently when we've stopped playing Mannings horribly boring style). - I don't think the booing was just because of that 1 moment or aimed personally at Pring.

Agree. Though that incident was an interesting one because everyone could see the backpass coming, and we're shouting for him not to do it. He appeared to then second guess it and look for an option, but not seeing one, did it anyway. (From where I sat that's what it looked like anyway). Quite a few comical 'no, no, noooo's from where I was sitting (including me).

Its symptomtic of a bigger issue though. LM has even admitted himself the possibility of over-coaching, overloading with information. Seems to lead to players making bizarre decisions. (Unless they have the vision and decision making skills of an Iniesta!)

Just bizarre not to put the ball back in the box when everyone is up for a corner. It's hardly route one football to ping it back in from a set piece.

Since when does getting the ball kicked in your stomach warrant stopping the game and the ball being returned to you from the opposition for you to to restart the game unopposed?? ******* joke

She clearly wasn't looking at who had the ball when she stopped play. But one of her assistants should have been able to help her out. Bizarre moment that.

  4. First half was very poor. They were sharp and up for it, we weren't. Either the system wasn't working, or the wrong players in the wrong roles due to absence of Vyner and Dickie. Maybe a bit of both. Individuals like sykes and Williams just didn't look up for it or showed very poor quality on a few occasions.

Second half we came out with more intensity which they all do deserve a bit of credit for. So many first halves like that this season have been followed up by worse second halves! So credit that they came out with a bit more gusto and you could see them trying to fire one another up.

We were still a bit slow with the final ball, or hesitant to shoot. Their goal came after our best spell so credit to us for sticking at it. I had a pretty good view of the penalty incident - hit an srm but at pretty close range. I'm always surprised when we get a penalty (!), but wasn't surprised that she gave it and she was very fussy and gave a lot of soft fouls all afternoon. Didn't let much go.

Pleased that we showed a bit of fight and got a goal at the end and keep the mini unbeaten run going. First half performance was really very poor and it's obviously a concern that we are still seeing that kind of performance - as somebody above said, its not a good ST renewal advert! But at least we got something out of the game, even if Huddersfield will feel hard done by

Think half the problem is the lack of movement up front. James seemed to be waving his hands suggesting he had no one to play forward to.

Yep. Think the two behind Tommy have to work harder to find space and show better first touch when they get it played in. and Sykes need to be more direct when he gets the ball.

All pretty listless so fat. Frustrating. We are rotating the starting 11 so no excuse of tiredness for me. Just not at it.

  6. Well well well.

Can't remember who it was on wed who posted about there not being much between most if not all teams in the champ. Coming down to tactical set up/form/desire/who woke up on the right side of the bed. They're being proved right with this top 3 choking the way they are.

Funny old game. Blackburn fans must be scratching their heads.

  7. 40% off the yellow kit being advertised last night. Wonder how many of them they ever sold? Can't say I remember seeing many.

Hope for everyone's sake the club just play it safe this year - no "nods to tradition", no "homages to the past", no "celebrations" of this or that. Call me a cynic.

Just a good quality red shirt please. Too much to ask?

Probably end up with something from the Zak Vyner range.

It was Toby that made the statement not Leroy, the reason it stood out to me was because he said "Vyner is 26, or maybe 27". And I just thought it sounded amateur.

I don't know if it's just me, but Toby Osborne is absolutely terrible as a commentator, really don't know how he's got that gig, it almost distracts from the game. Chris Honor is even worse when he's on.

Really refreshing having Leroy on tonight and actually talking about the game as it was happening, instead of Toby's predictable input of "I'm sure we'll see a sub soon, Mehmeti and Harry Cornick are on the bench"

Football commentary obviously isn't as easy as we think!

I haven't watched on Robins TV for a little while - but one relatively simple thing that would elevate the commentary significantly would be just to talk less! It's not radio, we can see what's happening. These guys should sit down and listen to Martin Tyler, Clive Tyldesley etc. I'm not sure the robins tv guy quite understands what the role of the commentator is. Maybe Jonathan Pearce could give him some pointers.

Came across Jonathan Pearce's euro 96 capital gold fm commentary the other day for England v Holland. If you think Robins TV is a little bit partisan, doesn't compare to this. Think English version of that Icelandic commentator a few years ago.

  9. Listening to the football cliches podcast recently - apparently some now refer to a clean sheet as a "Cleano". Let's hope our social media team don't catch on.

Good signs from our defence tonight - as you say a young back line, without Rob Dickie who has been one of our best players. Considering we're without Naismith and Atkinson (I'd forgotten all about him until somebody mentioned him earlier) it's all the more impressive to go on a run without conceding (yes...Vardy should have scored...but he didn't!)
