They used Cotts to get them promoted then the second he questioned the board he was gone(when they were interfering in transfer negotiations) and Lee Johnson a championship novice coach brought in. Pearson was brought in to sort out our financial mess and use the Academy players on a limited budget. Once he sorted out the mess and started to question the people above him he was suddenly sacked and another novice championship coach brought in!

Ah ok, that's a different message to your original one, but this I agree with.

When it comes to football they like managers who speak their language….complete nonsense! Straight talking guys like Cotterill and Pearson who tell it how it is and don’t suck up to the hierarchy don’t last long!

    That just isn't true?

Cotts was in charge for 3 years 1 month

Nige was in charge for 2 years 8 months

LJ was in charge for 4 years 5 months

LM (so far) has been in charge for 4 months.

Straight talking guys like Cotterill and Pearson who tell it how it is and don't suck up to the hierarchy have been in charge for 5 years 9 months where as LJ & LM have been in charge for 4 years 9 months.

LM needs to be in charge for another year for the board to give these types of managers exactly the same amount of time.

Think Tanners back but the point stands. These next 9 games aren’t exactly a free hit because of how poor we’ve been overall under Liam, but I think the worst of all worlds would be not treating it as an “extended pre season” and doing things like giving players such as JKL minutes.

I’d imagine fans would be far more forgiving of a poor result/performance if it happened when “experimenting” as opposed to ploughing the furrow we are at the moment.

    No they won't.

Good luck to benarous, would be great to see him get some minutes before the end of the season. As an aside, that basic passing drill,,surely thats under 10s stuff, and yet some of them were off target?!

That’s my concern too. I get that people have reservations about Mannings coaching ability, but the serious lack of basic footballing ability (10 yard passes, throw ins that bounce up waist height to the recipient) or a poor footballing brain (passes onto the wrong favoured foot or behind a player and not in front of them to step on to or just aimlessly heading it towards the centre of the pitch) we could have 20 world class coaches and we’d still struggle.

The steel work above all stands bar the Dolman is dirty and needs a wash and a paint job. I never understand why it doesn't get done every summer. And the ground level panelling around the outside of the Lansdown is poor also, featuring areas where you can see they've scoured off marks etc. Inside the ground Ashton Gate looks impressive, outside, you see how a still impressive stadium upgrade can be done on the relative cheap in comparison with something like Spurs'new stadium.

I take pride in our ground. It does matter.

Yeah, why doesn't our £55m stadium rebuild look the same as the £1 billion Spurs stadium. It's ridiculous!

A posted this on a previous thread, an interesting read:

Martin was born in Brighton, East Sussex, to parents Dean and Kerry.[2] He has two older brothers, Jamie and David, and a younger brother, Pepe, while his parents also fostered. His father was a taxi driver who subjected Martin's mother to domestic abuse and had spent periods of time in prison. His father's gambling addiction saw the family lose their house in Hollingbury, moving to Hollingdean.  Prior to signing with Wycombe he was cleaning pub toilets in the mornings prior to school, then working in Spar in the evenings.[4]

Martin established a charitable foundation in his hometown of Brighton, initially set up as a football academy, named the Russell Martin Foundation.[5] The charity aims to use "the power of football to help change people's lives" by providing access to football, education, and health courses in the local community.[5]

Martin has been a vegan since 2014, initially for health reasons as he sought to manage issues with ulcerative colitis.[6] He is also a part-owner of Erpingham House, the largest vegan restaurant in the UK.[7] In a 2018 interview, he stated that he had joined the Green Party of England and Wales.[7] He is also a proponent of Buddhism.

    Russell, Jamie, David aaaaaand... Pepe!?

Would be a nuts decision to let him go....

And especially as his game isn’t based on hard or long running like say Knights is.

I think the phrase the first few yards are in your head is perfect for James.

Unlikely to be seen anywhere near a Super Sunday type match unfortunately.

Osman might because he's ex-Prem so armchair fans might have at least heard of him.

Bloke at work asked me about the pundits today especially who "Jobby" was, why was he on there and why didn't they get any ex-Bristol City or West Ham players to do it (despite Jobi playing for West Ham...)

From what I have seen we play straight into feet too much which forces pressure on the 1st touch being good and makes turning difficult. Play into space and the marking defender has a much harder job. It doesn't need to be acres of space, just the side furthest from the defender.

Key point - the run is made 1st and the ball passed 2nd, that is what catches out defenders.

Yes I agree with you, especially Pring. Every pass to him seems to be to his right foot meaning he has to stop and either pass backwards or he is under pressure, we never seem to put the ball ahead of him to run onto and allow him to cross first time. The same does go for Tanner but I expect less from an attacking sense from him, but also contributes to the % he passes backwards to Vyner.

Another annoying thing I’ve noticed is headers in the central area of the pitch, if our player is unchallenged they will just head it vaguely in the air back to where it came, not in the direction of another player or even bring the ball down for possession. I can’t tell if that’s a lack of football awareness or poor communication in the team?

  11. Well I guess it was used well in the game yesterday then if some people were unaware it was in use!

Obviously a lack of contentious incidents would have helped.

From what I have seen so far ( still very early days ) I think we have a top coach who knows exactly what he wants my issue is do Bristol city currently have the players to carry out his principles / methods / ideas ( not in any way is a slur on the players )

Well that's what Manning will be assessing now. The ones that he can get to carry out his principles will stay, the ones he can mould/coach into it will get time to and the ones that refuse or simply can't/are really not able to will be sold and replaced with players from the first two categories.

Am I the only one being frustrated by Sykes at the moment? The effort is there, always available, but no end product. Can't beat a player (ok a lot can't, Beckham for instance) but his crosses don't go past his marker or the first defender in the box and his important passes are not well weighted meaning the move breaks down. To me he needs working on.

I think he’s a victim of Tanner’s lack of attacking prowess.

On the other side Pring gets forward which gives Mehmeti/Bell more space or another option as the full back needs to be aware of the overlap.

Sykes is generally 1-on-1 with the full back and he isn’t blessed with blistering speed or skill. On the occasions that Knight gives him that option is when Sykes looks dangerous.

  14. His crosses are perfect for Wells and Conway too, the sort of clipped curlers - not sure how to describe them!

But the ones where all it needs is the striker to get the run in front of the defender and flick the ball.

They are hitting the first man at the moment, but once he gets them right I can see us profiting from them.

Our recent record at Birmingham is truly abysmal (back to back 3-0 defeats) & Watford are in excellent form.

Be amazed if we won either, let alone both.

Snap your hand off for a couple of draws.

People were saying that before the Sunderland game too…

If these results are to be “sustainable” Manning needs backing in the window. We were still second best for periods of that game but the spirit we all know is there got us over the line. Over to the hierarchy now…..

Well yeah and we were better for periods of it too? But we got the win and Hull didn’t.

Thats the same with pretty much every game of football unless you’re one of the worlds best. If you’re expecting us to dominate the possession and chances for the full 90 mins, it ain’t gonna happen!
