Bottom line is none of us really know, do we?

He could have been offered a deal elsewhere that was so similar in value to ours that he’s weighing up having to move location.

We could have withdrawn our offer when we reported back for training & he didn’t show. We are under absolutely no obligation to publicise this fact whilst he remains on our payroll.

He could have indicated he’ll sign a new deal with us but is banking the one month in lieu of his last contract at a higher pay rate first (this seems unlikely).

He might well not have any offers at all at present.

I can’t see this dragging on into the new season & would expect Pearson to be asked about it & provide clarification in the press conference ahead of the Preston game.

    You're right.

He's "off" the payroll as of 31 July?

Some have said about Pearson applying double standards on the "on the bus" policy in relation to how Kalas is being treated compared with HNM but Kalas is a better defender when fit than HNM is a midfielder and that might explain it.

If Kalas does end up staying I don't care how good his unattached training regime is he won't be up to Championship fitness levels

Kalas as has been pointed was out injured ? for the vast majority of last season so wasn’t in contention.
I am sure his attitude is up there with the rest of the team. He has been offered a contract on reduced terms, which Pearson has been open about.
Kalas is a good CB and being a free agent he can look elsewhere. He has been a good asset at the club and the door remains open to him.

You would have thought by now that if he were that good another club would have made an offer at the very least in line with ours.

How hungry is he to play for us?

He’s almost missed the whole of pre season now & shopped around all summer for a new club.

If he re-signs, I won’t be too disappointed because he is a good player, but I feel like if he comes back here it’s because we’re the final resort.

I agree and in a normal workplace the optics of that aren't great.

Kalas is at a different stage of career compared to Taylor Moore who took a pay cut but wanted to prove himself with a career that had many years left in.

When Weimann took his pay-cut in the aftermath of his long term ACL injury he couldn't , in his wildest dreams, have expected to have the best season [21/22] of his career.  Is he going to join the long list of players who cost the club a fee to leave for nothing next summer.

Nahki has handled himself impeccably the whole time he has been here - sensible over his contract, didn't moan when he was left out of the team / played out of position, and been a good role model for the youngsters - how much of Tommy Conway's development is down to him?

I don’t listen essentially because of the negative content the vast majority of which comes from Ian Gay. The guys a depressive influence, not just to me but anyone who listens to him bleating on and on.

***k me, this season's just around the corner and it seems Ian has been living rent free in your head all through this summer as well as last!

Im surprised that anyone can more negative than Ian Gay……jeez…….he’s so dull and pessimistic. If City win 5-0 he’d say that it should have been 6 or 7 and that the opposition had more possession…………………

I see him as a 19 year old with relatively little experience in the Championship and none in the Premier. Using your example of Spurs (but insert many other teams here) he will have immediate development by working and training with top quality players day in day out. I'm not saying that Alex Scott is as good Phil Foden but he seems to have done pretty well by being used sparingly in this way and has continued to develop.

I think this would be preferable and better for Scott's development in this type of scenario than playing more regularly in a Bournemouth team that could well be in a relegation fight all season.

I beg to differ on that particular point - how many other 19 years olds have had as much Championship experience as him and demonstrated their ability to be effective in more than one position?

Think he may be entitled to 1 extra month, could be wrong

Yes, I think you are right and it's because the terms offered are inferior to his existing contract.

Thing that get's me about Kalas is that he's known of this offer for 6 months and his agent should have had, by now, a list of suitors lined up but there doesn't appear to be any does there? Or certainly not any so far that have offered him better terms than we have. A good player when at the top of his game and fit, but right now I feel Nigel is indulging Kalas by going along with his continuing indecision and this seems out of character for a manager who's made it quite clear that he only wants to work with players that are committed to the cause here.

The general feeling over the summer was that this was the strongest championship for years, and would be a horrific division to navigate. Now, seeing the fixtures on paper - is it just me that sees really nothing to fear there? The start looks kind, and there isn’t any stretch where I think “wow, we’ll really struggle there”.

Far from the fixtures bringing it home how hard the division is, I’m actually now looking at it and seeing something that we can do well in.

(Noting that this may be blind optimism and things can change between now and season start in terms of team’s recruitment)

    Anyone else?

We said as much on the FBC Fixture review Podcast this morning:

Unfortunately this is the worst possible scenario.

    1. Next summer, he will have 12 months left on his contract.

    2. Value will decline due to contract length.

    3. Top 4 team offers no re-sell value in regards to ‘sell on %’.

If he leaves this summer, it’s with our best wishes and a hefty fee to match.

Otherwise, the best we can hope for is he renews his contract for a further 12 months, with a fixed release clause fee (£25m etc).

That would be the decent thing for him to do but his agent might not be thinking in the same way

Midfield is quite well covered too.

James, Williams, Naismith, McCrorie, if stays Scott and then King again if he stays.

Benarous can play central too can't he- as can Weimann in extremis, that depth chart is starting to look quite good.

All good in their own way but who's the one to offer 7-10 to satisfy Nigel's request for "more goals from midfield". Shelton scored 9 in the 89/90 promotion  season and in the early 70s I remember Gow finding the net 12 times or thereabouts

For any City fan aged over 40 I don’t think I’d be wrong to say that Gary Shelton would be selected in everyone’s first X1 as an attacking midfielder - imagine him & Gow in the same team! Only 5’ 7” tall, this energetic box to box player made 150 appearances and scored 24 goals after signing in August 1989. That’s not a shabby record in front of goal when you look at the meagre returns from that area of the pitch in the present day.

Gary made his full debut with Walsall at just 17 and was signed by nearby Aston Villa before he was 20. In his first full season [78/79] at Villa Gary made 21 appearances and scored an impressive 8  goals but surprisingly he never got minutes on the pitch in Villa’s title winning season of 79/80 under Ron Saunders nor did he feature other than as a non-playing sub when Villa won the then equivalent of the Champions League under Tony Barton.

Seeking regular football Gary joined Sheffield Wednesday in 1982 under Jack Charlton and was a key member of the team that achieved promotion to the topflight with Howard Wilkinson in 1984. He made 190 appearances for The Owls before moving to Oxford United in summer 1987. Oxford’s 3 year stay in the top division ended in his first season there and roll the clock forward to summer 89 and so came the move to Bristol City in a swap deal involving later to be England manager Steve McLaren.

Shelts talks fondly of his time at City where he was a virtual ever present of the team that got promoted in his first season to what is now the Championship. We talked about his teammates, the camaraderie within the side, Joe Jordan’s leadership and departure, the sad loss of Dean Horrix, losing the title to Rovers, the thrill of beating Chelsea in the FA Cup before being dumped out by Cambridge in a 5th round 2nd replay, playing under Lumsden then Smith and being part of the caretaker trio with Mark Aizlewood & Russell Osman, the latter getting the job full time in summer 1993 and then exiting his two colleagues within a matter of months!

Gary moved to Chester playing his last league game in his 40th year which also saw his only sending off. In 2000 he took a coaching role under former Wednesday teammate Gary Megson who was in charge at West Brom. After Megson left Shelts stayed on for a short while as part of Bryan Robson’s coaching set up where a young Nigel Pearson was his Assistant.

Now virtually retired save for occasional driving work, Gary has been out of football since 2005 but remains an avid follower of the game on TV. He was a delight to talk to and he will make every effort to get to Ashton Gate this season for the game against Sheffield Wednesday.

    Not sure.

Doesn’t it also depend on many other factors?

    1. Where you are on your earning cycle? So if this was your first big move & you’d been in League One/Two previously then undoubtedly that would be your judgement. When you’ve already made a small fortune from football, maybe not.

    2. Where you’re from, if you were from the North then again yep, but if you’re from this part of the world then possibly not. I got offered a job in the North East recently on more money & didn’t even consider it.

    3. Finally the type of person you are, Bryan is clearly not your average footballer, not too many of them went to public school, for starters, he also doesn’t strike me as a fool with money, no track record of divorce (always a great way to lose a lot of money), failed business ventures or obsessive compulsive buying, so the opportunity to still earn decent money in a lovely part of the world near to his family as he enters his 30s might well be attractive.

I’m not saying he won’t go elsewhere but don’t think it is quite so simple as just a matter of money.

All those points are valid. That said, he might also want his legacy to be that of being remembered for the 2017/18 season and the goal vs. Man Utd rather than the associated pressure of being  the prodigal son coming homes as "one of our own" to inspire us to the next level but not living up to expectation.

I guess it's kinda contextual. Does the value of being on the doorstep of your family outweigh the potential for say Middlesborough to pay 5 to ten grand more a week than us? I'd imagine he'd still be at the top of our wage structure so it won't be cheap, but we might be a more attractive option for reasons beyond money.

Hard to know, really. I just really want it to happen.

£1.2M over 3 years taking the mid-point of the range you quote for Boro's "more a week" - I think he'd suffer the pain of living on Teeside!
