This is no different to the rest of society though, no? Why would a player have any grounds to sue a football club if they became ill/family member became ill (as awful as that would be) anymore than a retail warehouse worker could sue their employer? It does get exceptionally complicated though I agree - what should happen to a vulnerable worker if they refuse to start working again?

Because workers in a warehouse probably have many policies in place to ensure social distancing. Dont forget going back to work isnt a free for all now, its under strict 2m distance guidelines (or should be) and if it isnt they'd definitely have a case to answer.

Footballers dont have that same protection, its a contact sport they have to come within 2m distance of their opponents.

I thought that testing capacity was over 100k but there currently wasn't the demand for it?

I disagree with the above posters. Football is coming back, whether we think that's morally acceptable or not. The UK gov has been making it clear that it wants professional football to return as a boost to the country. We'll be living alongside this virus for months if not years to come, so it's a decision of when football returns and not if. Yes, there's a risk - but there's a risk for everyone being asked to return to work around the country too. The government and sporting bodies clearly feel it's an acceptable level of risk.

As I say, we can debate whether we think mid-June is the right time but now that this ball is rolling I don't think it will stop.

We had to send 50k tests to the US because they couldnt be processed in British labs, I dont think the capacity is there at all whilst the demand certainly is.

73% of a yougov poll said football wouldnt boost their morale so thats more bollocks from Boris. I agree its a case of when, obviously it will return at SOME point, but I cant see how it can be summer unless numbers of cases drop dramatically IMO. People returning to work is a necessity and its only those that can distance that are going back. Plenty that involve physical contact arent.

How do you test footballers? lock them up til the end of the season between games? Else they need to be tested before every training session and every game, because they could go home after a game and catch it from their partner (or their kids who might be back at school).

Championship set to return on the 13th June according to this.

Would love to see this, but I just cant see it being safe. Currently being discussed on GMB

Firstly how can we justify testing every footballer when frontline staff still arent getting tests/results quickly enough? Our capacity for testing has dropped since we hit that debatable 100k target. 60k people tested on 11th May.

Secondly, you cant trust fans not to congregate. People will meet in parks, round houses etc to watch the football. If Liverpool / Leeds are about to win their first league in years, do you think their fans will all stay at home and watch on their TV, in the hight of summer? No chance I'm afraid.

Then there's the argument that people cant see both parents/grandchildren etc but 20+ football matches can take place across the country?

Does it give you accurate feedback about calories burned? I have to say that is one thing I want to keep an eye on, and not sure how accurate Strada etc are when tracking runs

I think HR monitors will be more accurate than Strava, they always seem to be a basic calculation and usually over estimate. I’ve got just an Apple Watch and I must say I’ve used the calorie count on that daily for a couple of years now to monitor my requirements and always managed to meet my goals (either lose or gain weight) by using it and allowing for 100-200 margin.

2nd run today, 8 miles in 73 minutes. Little quicker than I wanted it to be, need to control my pace more on those easy recovery runs.

I tried out the Nike running club app today on my run, has recorded program guides for various run distances. Was quite clever and a welcome distraction every few minutes talking me through the stages of the run. Probably will get too repetitive after a couple of runs but would recommend for a couple at each distance.

Bit of yoga and stretching afterwards, strength and conditioning tomorrow and then back out running Friday for an hour at easy pace with 10 minutes “fast” in the middle

  5. First run on the road to 50 for me, 35 minutes at an “easy”’ pace. Was a bit quicker than I expected managed 6.2km

going to start using miles instead of km now too, so 8 miles for me tomorrow at an easy pace again. Looking for about 9:30/mile in my “easy” runs, so around 76 minutes I’ll be happy with

This year has officially been written off!!

Was supposed to be doing London marathon in April and The full distance Outlaw in July - both cancelled and i can’t see in a million years that London will take place in October even though i have to motivate myself to train again in case it is!!

I would definitely invest in a decent pair of shoes, i wear mizuno wave inspire, very comfortable.

That’s a tough break, I assume you’ll train for October. If it’s cancelled will you continue training and take the place in next years?

Don't know if we've covered this, but particularly relevant in lockdown: running books!

I've just read Running With The Kenyans, and now moving onto Finn's 2nd book, The Way of the Runner, with his 3rd book about ultra running lines up.

They're an easy read. A combo of travel writing and running story.

I've also got Dean Karnazes Ultramarathon Man lined up which is supposed to be good.

    Any others of note?

I enjoy listening to David Goggins Can’t hurt me when running.

Not a huge book person but a couple of good documentaries I’ve seen, the iron cowboy on netflix is the story of James Lawrence who took on 50 Ironmans in 50 states in 50 days. On prime, Finding Traction about a woman trying to break the men’s record for a 240 mile ultra and then a short one on YouTube called Why. Was a bit dull but an insight into longer distance racing

Day 1 of my training complete... Monday’s are rest days! ?

did some yoga though, something I want to make more time for during this training.

  8. Anyone got any recommendations on running shoes? I suppose I probably need to go and get an assessment done and get some correctly fitted shoes if I'm going to be covering such big distances but while shops are shut I need another pair in the meantime. Anything in particular I should look for or consider?

Welcome to the team Marcus! Wow - that's impressive progress, and what an achievement 50 miles would be, especially if not even in a race. I live that dedication to head out before 6am!

I'll keep an eye on strava, and let us know how you're getting on.

We've got 18 runners now. Not bad going. A couple more would be nice.

Towards the end of the summer I think we'll schedule a marathon day where we try to reach an overall mileage on a particular Sunday. I wonder what 18 runners could amass? 250 miles easy. 350 miles more difficult. Marcus, we'll need 50 from you!

But if we can get a few more runners, it would be amazing to smash 500 miles between us...

Well, all things going well my 16 week plan ends with an attempt around the 30th august so I might be ready to give it a go!

  10. Just came across this thread (and requested to join the strava club ?)

Ive been one of those that’s got our more and more during lockdown due to the gym being closed and wanted to use it as an opportunity to improve my mental game.

Ive been following the virtual Ironman club challenges and completed a couple, plus achieved my first marathon distance run during lockdown

Admittedly probably a bit irresponsible being outside for that long but I tend to be up and out at 5/6am and really lucky to live in the countryside surrounded by country roads and big fields so I can go out and barely see anyone for miles.

From Monday I’m starting a 16 week plan to get to 50 mile Ultra territory, and longer term I have my eye on a 24 hour endurance race and want to complete a real triathlon (but my swimming needs work!)

It does seem players are being paid in full. Inaction from players and club is beginning to leave a bad taste tbh. Other clubs are doing more for their communities. We have a rich owner with proud Bristolian heritage, and players earning more in a month than many of the non-playing staff or local residents will earn in a year.

    Could it be possible to:

    - Donate a % of player wages to support non-playing staff

    - Make a donation to local hospices, which are now in dire financial straits just as they could play a major role particularly if there is a trend for some towards palliation vs treatment

    - Use the Gate as a community hub for storage and distribution of food aid or medical supplies

    - Retain commercial catering supply chains and offer meals to those in close proximity

Surely more can be done in extraordinary times?

How do you know what people are and aren’t doing/giving? It doesn’t always have to be made public

Surely it’s quite clear by now this ISNT advisory, its government orders. You play with your own health by all means but if someone at risk doesn’t care about catching it but then ends up in hospital is taking a bed from someone else. Why take the risk ffs

Close. Considering the ill father in law, partner decided to go for a drink Friday with a friend before picking up the takeaway. Completely unnecessary and irresponsible

Just told me I better be careful who I come into contact with at my Nans funeral next week and shouldn't stay too long. Fair point on it's own, but didnt like the double standards being pointed out

*i did get sent home to work today though, so this is day 1 of who knows how many at home together... ?

Some employers are less than responsible- yet in the example you provide I struggle to see much of a short to medium term solution.

Some of your ideas could mitigate it but in the short to medium term, I'm not sure we could just close supermarkets...they should like doctors and nurses and the rest at the NHS get the best possible safety conditions (within the context) in which to work.

Talking of irresponsible employers, a mate- even after Boris said what he said on Monday evening, told me that they still had their office staff in on Thursday. Unsure office staff are necessary?

I'm STILL here today ?‍♂️ albeit we have a staff meeting at 9 with an "update" from the MD.

There's absolutely no reason I should be in an office (especially as I have a high at-risk father in law living with us at the moment so we can provide the assistance he needs without travelling back and forth). I work for a company in distribution so we have a factory full of agency staff with no distancing measures in place yet and honestly, little idea who is coming in and out and what they are carrying.

If we aren't told to work from home today I'm going to either have to make a case to HR/Directors (with the potential to single myself out whilst I'm still on probation) OR my partner is going to have to move out for 12 weeks and live with her Dad.

update as I type this - people have moved desks so their a little bit further away... forgetting we all use the same toilets, canteen, doors in and out etc. A token gesture really

edit again: someone just walked in (i sit by HR so hear things I probably shouldnt) and someone's just come back from being off ill with some symptoms on Thursday and Friday. Why are people not taking a safe approach and enforcing the 7/14 days??

In the US. I can get an mri tomorrow

You would have to wait 12-16 weeks in the UK.

I get injured tomorrow, I can immediately get into see a surgeon and get scheduled.

Current wait time for orthopedic surgery in the UK is 4-6 months

We have zero access to things like HRT & TRT. Our govt won’t financially support things like that

It’s 3-4 week wait to see a freaking regular doctor in this country.

    Not so ridiculous...

You could get an MRI pretty quick with private health cover - which is effectively what Americans have?

Ah didn’t realise that and hadn’t read the other replies. should have known actually as someone brought a McDonald’s into work yesterday!

Pneumococcal Vaccine apparently, for bacterial pneumonia. Quite common for over 60s in Germany (read this on reddit)

The one thing I wonder is what will the penalty be for breaking it, if lockdown is introduced.  The police won’t be able to cope, the prisons are full, the justice system will be slowing down, so what action could they take...... apart from shooting transgressors?

Don’t you remember? If we went into lockdown too early we’d all get fed up after a few weeks and start going out too soon...

Yes, definitely encouraging to hear, especially on the back of the deal with the Private Hospitals.

Even breweries such as Brewdog are stepping up and manufacturing and delivering Hand Sanitiser to Hospitals.

All these things combined could save many thousands of lives potentially. All about buying as many days/weeks/months as possible until a vaccine is (hopefully!) rolled out.

Budweiser (or their parent company) are using all left over alcohol from production to make hand sanitiser too

Can we just cancel 2020 now. I’ve had enough.

    Here is mine so far...

January 3rd - brother diagnosed out of blue of having 3 aggressive brain cancers and has ‘short months’ to live

January 10th - paralysed down his right side he is discharged from hospital to die, where he lives with his girlfriend and our 90 year old mother

January 20th - take over my mothers pension and bank account as brother is paralysed to find out they have extracted and spent over £50000 of her savings. I have no idea what is was spent on and they are not saying

January 22nd - I predict to my partner that now the raping of my mothers finance has stopped, so will her care so and mother will be dead in 6 months. Try to get her extra care, social services not interested

Feb 25th Get a call from brothers sister that mother had taken a fall and had been rushed into hospital

Feb 27th mother dies with fractured skull from the fall. Coroner refuses to release body for funeral as the body needs to go to autopsy due to ‘unusual  injuries’

March 9th  autopsy completed, cause of death obvious, how it happened open to interpretation. No further action taken

March 13th. Finally received death certificate and funeral booked for March 24th

March 19th funeral postponed due to corona virus

    anyone able to ‘beat this’?

wow sorry to hear all that, that’s truly awful.

What else can be done ? Curfews policed by the army ?

I think more needs to be done for businesses that aren’t complying. I see the concerns they have about going under, and I completely understand but we still haven’t sent people to work from home yet except any one who has a cough (and some came in before being sent home).

i wouldn’t personally want an army enforced curfew, but I can’t see any other solution. People aren’t listening and they’re being selfish.

its really sad because following brexit this was an ideal opportunity for the whole country to pull together for a common good and could have gone a long way to bridge divides.
