I met Noel Edmunds once, he is very short.

I once ushered Shane Ritchie at a cinema. He approached, shook my hand and said "Hi, I'm Shane" with a great deal of self-importance.

So don't talk to me about TV like I don't know nuffink about it!!

    We rarely ‘ enjoy’ Div 2 .
We don’t ‘ enjoy’ Div 3 or 4 either because we are always considered big fish in that pond and if we beat the likes of Gillingham, Colchester or Northampton it’s expected because we are a much bigger club and when we lose, which we often did, it was totally embarrassing.

We rarely enjoyed Div 1 either , come to think of it, once the thrill of the occasional win and being beaten regularly by the big boys wore off .

In fact I’m not sure why we even bother.
    :dunno:

Oh come now Major, there was that one game where we beat some team that we enjoyed. I think it was a long time ago...

Why get the train to Stonehouse to then drive to nailsworth ?

I'm not sure if that's a reply to me?

Forest Green Rovers are building a swanky new stadium outside of Stonehouse so in theory there will be good train links from North and East (lower carbon footprint). If they then reopened the train line to Bristol they would have links to South and West. I guess the Nailsworth fans would have to travel by tandem bicycle to keep it green.

I hope we don't keep seeing a change of system every game.

    442, 5122, 3412, 41212, 433. Lots of different systems this season.

I would say we have been 343 at times too with how advanced Weimann was getting from attacking midfield when we had been playing 3412.

I know injuries can mean we have to adapt. But it wouldn't surprise me if Fleming moves away from the 433, even though we could look at the Coventry first half as a positive we can build on. We played differently 2nd half.

Barnsley for 60 with the diamond was far from great but it was working until we went to a standard 442. And then he changed from that to wing backs the next game. I wanted us to look at that Barnsley first 60 trying a new system as not looking too bad, and continue with that system for the next game.

In the first half of the Coventry game O'Dowda and Weimann were playing close to Martin in the 433.

I think sometimes they need to get the mix right of supporting Martin, because he can't be isolated with direct balls going up to him. But also the wingers providing width or coming short, being involved in build up.

As long as one player is making runs off of him, though I do understand both making those central runs can also be dangerous. We will never get any balance right to any plan if we keep changing system and tactics.

Martin had a good first half. Him and O'Dowda were different players first half because we played differently. There were opportunities for O'Dowda to make those runs.

2nd half O'Dowda and Weimann were not close to Martin. It looked like Fleming had told them to stay wider. Martin was almost completely ineffective in the lone role in the 2nd half. We did try to pass the ball with the extra man advantage, but they don't seem to be trained to do that like other teams. There was the odd decent move but very little.

O'Dowda moved into an attacking midfield role after Scott had been replaced by Dasilva. Probably to try and get him a bit closer to Martin whilst still having a winger in Pring hugging the touchline. It did work in O'Dowda making the run and bringing down the Bakinson high pass to start off the move to the Weimann goal. Other than that move, Weimann and O'Dowda very quiet 2nd half, Martin too.

We then brought on Wells last 10 and changed shape to 424. We had struggled to cope with their midfield 3 before that but now only 2 on their 3. It was like we had less players not more!

So maybe just the odd change in selection with hopefully James and Atkinson returning, and look to improve on that Coventry first half.

I'm not sure it's what I'd go with usually but we have tried everything else. Did we look a relegation team first half 11 vs 11? Not sure we did. Being able to say that is a massive improvement isn't it!? ?

I personally think a 4-4-1-1 suits us best, with Semenyo and O'Dowda playing out wide, Weimann in behind Martin. It's an easy shape for the players to know their roles and it can be flexible.

You might say Semenyo isn't a wide player but he's shown he can support a right back. He would also be able to frequesntly swap with Weimann which gives defenders a difficult challenge.

Scott would then he back up for Weimann and Semenyo and I'd use him in every game.

I still think we'd have to suffer some lapses of football common sense, but that's always going to be the case this season with the profile of our squad.

Importantly, I think this gives us threat in several areas, and more pace and trickery.

I believe Vyner should adopt the  position of Rice at West Ham. Both pretty quick, can tackle and can run with the ball.

In theory, I agree, but there must be a reason that Pearson chooses not to.

Think it is a tricky situation as pretty much everyone OOC in the next 18 months will be on pre covid wages. So how do those negotiations go?

I think we are in dreamland a bit if we think we can convince Massengo today. Not ever seen much emotion from him before but last few games he has been visibly frustrated. Can’t say that I really blame him either to be honest.

We need to be honest about the situation and weigh up the pro and cons of perhaps selling in January. I’d say same goes for Kalas and Bentley. Then we need to be honest about the valuation of players like Dasilva, Palmer and O’Dowda. We may need to take some kind of loss on them at some point which will hurt but hopefully quicken up the rebuild process.

I think the only way you secure Massengo, other than by adequate remuneration, is telling him he's the first name on the teamsheet. Will he get that at Fulham, for example?

It has to be. I know some people are desperate to claim that we've been crap all season, but it's in the last month or so that the performances and results have nosedived.

Yeah, I was definitely not alone in saying earlier in the season that I was just happy that we were competitive in every game. Then we drastically dropped off at some point and became comically bad.

    Funny stuff.

That kind of high fashion is just art really, very rarely replicated on the high street. Might influence some styles but i can't see that particular outfit catching on outside of fashion circles if at all.

He's got the legs for it though.

I actually said to my skeptical Mrs a few weeks back that I reckon skirts for men will be a thing in the next decade (not just in Scotland). Men in skinny jeans was once laughable but look at the builders sueezing jnto their jeans and preening themselves before a night out nowadays!

I think the Watford situation may have been more to do with his health, as much as anything.
Nigel himself has acknowledged in interviews that when the Premier League returned after the covid break he was not the same - he was missing press conferences, he was spending less and less time on the training ground, he was struggling with heart and joint problems.
There’s also interviews out there that say that the players noticed a change in him since the return, and he wasn’t his usual effervescent self.

We know Watford’s owners are quick to sack, but I do wonder if, given that the form of the team was quite good, whether they acted to remove Pearson as he wasn’t well enough to fulfill the role.

We are currently in the same situation - but I assume that we are being a rather more caring employer than Watford, and at least giving him a chance to get well.

Then City gave him a 3 year deal with no clauses...! ?

I’ve posted similar a lot recently.  Too keen to do the killer move (mainly killer pass).  Combo of poor decision making and laziness / lack of taking responsibility.  A killer pass might get an ooh or an ahh from the crowd, but it ultimately turns over possession.

The other thing is it leaves you open to being caught in transition.  Watching basketball, it’s amazing how a steal and then breakaway ends up in you conceding points, which sounds backwards.  Essentially you break away in a disorganised fashion (Basketball has lots of repeatable patterns in normal possessions), lose the ball and get countered on.  It’s not quite the same in football, but I think under LJ and a bit of late we are played disorganised counter-attacking football, relying on a bit of quality to create chances….not through organised build ups.  In fairness we did a few good moves v Forest (h) first half.  So we end up trying to be too “fancy”, too “killer”, and then we have no shape.  That can happen anywhere, because we too keen to attack.  I’m a great believer in establishing clear possession and shape before attacking.  That’s not to say it’s slow and allows everyone in the opposition team to get behind the ball, just recognising the right time to go.  That might be direct(ish), might be short, sharp passes.  Early season we saw King and James knowing when to advance or not, King doing it very quietly and efficiently too.

Lots of other little issues too, but we want to make it a frenzy too often….and too often in the wrong part of the pitch.

    (Thanks for reply too)

I read that and couldn't help but think of Weimann. I'm very happy with his goal return this season, but 'frenzied' has always been his MO. I agree that we need to be more savvy.

It was Twentyman who first mentioned long Covid, not RG and the subsequent conversation wasn't too specific to NP

That's true, but Gould did then start willingly talking about long covid and specifically talked about low energy levels.
