I’ve become used to losing when we’re favourites to win, and not being surprised we win when the odds are stacked against us. We are the epitome of inconsistent, but I know we can beat anyone on any given day when we’ve got a fit squad. That in itself is progress IMO.
-
So you expect him to pick the same team, same formation, when we’ve got games Weds, Sat, Tues? That’s madness. If ever the was a time to “chop and change”, it’s this season (and not for a moment do I think he chops and changes because he doesn’t have hardly many options to do so!) Still, six points from three games in six days isn’t enough for some people.

West Brom have been poor but we’ve managed the game superbly well tonight. Atkinson my MOTM (again). -

Great first half, great response from the weekend. We are the definition of inconsistent and look surprisingly comfortable in a 4-4-2 as well, although Dasilva isn’t offering much. Atkinson’s looked solid at LB. As ever with 2-0 leads, the next goal is crucial. -
This sort of comment is what I take issue with. I think it’s a bloody miracle to have stayed in this division following the car crash that was Ashton and LJ, and with having no money to spend. He has improved the culture, brought more youngsters through than anyone in recent times, and we have a decent team when everyone’s fit and firing. This was always going to be a three-year project, as has always been said. The problem is we have no depth, which means we struggle for consistency. But in the bigger picture, we are going in the right direction IMO.

Totally agree. Usually I see the logic in not changing a winning side, but there’s a real need for squad rotation with the games coming thick and fast because of the World Cup stupidly being played in winter. WSM worked well at the end of the last year, particularly against more physical opponents. I see no reason why they couldn’t be paired again yesterday. That’s not to say it’s our best partnership up front, but it’s more horses for courses.

For me, Conway and Wells are our best strike partnership. But Martin and Semenyo should start against the direct sides as Conway and Wells get bullied. Otherwise, I agree with those that say use Semenyo as an impact sub against tiring defences. The stats alone back up that idea.

We were three points off the play-offs before a ball was kicked today and have played some good stuff this season. Definite signs of progress. But the squad is small with no depth, due to reasons not of NP’s making. What I disagree with Nige on is picking an unchanged side today in the knowledge Millwall didn’t play in midweek and were therefore fresher. Fine margins, but an avoidable mistake.
-
He needs a rest, that’s clear. Mind you, I thought it was a bit naive to go into today with an unchanged XI against a fresher Millwall side who didn’t play in midweek.

If the teams below us win their games in hand.....

I’d rather see Tanner given a run at RB if we go to a back four and I think we could solve the Naismith conundrum with his return to the XI at LB. If Pring starts, and he was pretty poor after a good first five minutes, it has to be on the left wing. And we need to pick out best strike force which is either Wells and Conway against sides who will be less direct, or Martin and Semenyo against physical sides like Millwall, Birmingham etc. I’d also like to see Bajic get a chance in goal as it seems like he can command his box at the very least. We miss Matty James too, IMO. -

Personally, I’d go back to four at the back. Bajic; Tanner, Klose, Atkinson, Naismith; Sykes, Williams, Scott, Pring; Wells, Conway. -

His best position is on the left in the final third. Not a CB or LB, not a LWB; a proper left winger IMO. -
He can’t help himself, can he?! Clown.
-
His first touch was generally poor with his back to goal, but as others said he scared the living daylights out of their defence after the break.

It wasn’t easy on the eye, but good to see us grind out a hard-fought victory. Three points for off the play-offs now! ? -

I was hoping to see Bajic over them both tonight. -
Well said. The bottom line is if we have a fully-fit squad and they’re on-song, we’re a match for anyone in this league. Beyond those 11-14 players there’s bugger all depth to compete, especially against physical, direct sides.
-
A back four with Atkinson and Vyner as centre-backs against a direct side like Birmingham who had real quality on set pieces? The result would’ve still been a defeat.

Don’t worry, Hogan usually scores against us.
