  1. I see Bath Half has been put back from March to Sept 2021... cant see any 'big' events going ahead next year.

Relish Running are still doing small events at Bath two tunnels and at the Racecourse - staggered starts etc which is fine for small numbered events

So the Thorlos socks I had certainly not gone down well. Not sure if they're wrong fit for me but was having a blinding good run yesterday (10 miles in 1hr 20) and then I started to suffer.  Last 4 miles home were a killer, not helped by a stich, but that was caused by me having to slow down due to feet pain. When I got home found I had 6 blister on my left foot, 3 on side of big toe and then some on the top of my toes.  Haven't experienced anything like it before really (get the odd blister on a long run) and this was second attempt with the socks.  Thinking I need to really find something better.

https://www.runderwear.co.uk/collections/anti-blister-socks try these! never had a blister with them and comfortable.

London Marathon 2022 maybe.. cant see anything this side of a vaccination

Yeah I see events in 2021 and guidance on how they will do it, staggered starts etc but can't see how they will go ahead...

Putting this out here as it's semi on topic, I'm thinking of starting a blog soon. I created a separate Instagram to log my running and training progress and slowly building some following on that after not really being fussed about followers at first.

I feel I've got a decent amount of knowledge from my own hours of research of different nutrition trends, training protocols and also experience of challenges I've undertaken and things I'll look to take on in the future. My "niche" or selling point really is trying to be a one-stop shop for people new to training. The site I wished I'd found when I was getting started that could teach me the different options for training, where to go to get involved and sign-posting to specific sites/articles etc for more "scientific" explanations (ie people actually qualified in that field as opposed to my opinions and experience)

Firstly anyone here done anything similar?

Secondly, anyone willing to share in here or over DM any questions they've had in the past and struggled to find clear no-BS answers to? Or things they'd be interested in knowing more about that I can take away as article ideas?

Will keep the handles and site out of the post as not sure on the rules of self-promotion but happy to share if anyone is interested. I'll be honest my Instagram isn't all that interesting at the moment, I need to get over the mental block of not wanting to look like silly taking photos/videos during runs ? at the minute my "USP" is that I run a lot longer distances compared to most of the people on my facebook!

That sounds like a good idea, the amount of stupid running questions I google or watch on YouTube is unreal! I am sure I have loads of questions that could start you off...

If you want to get into longer territory (or increase the speeds of your runs) you definitely need to come down from those zones. There’s a lot of research supporting the 80:20 split whereby roughly 80% (it can be 75:25 or 85:15) of your runs are at low intensity, zone 2, and 20% are at zone 4 maybe pushing zone 5.

there’s an article here https://www.runnersworld.com/uk/training/motivation/a27718661/what-is-80-20-running/ but also Global Triathlon Network have a video on it on YouTube. It’s the sort of principle I’ve been following for my training and I’m noticing my times are getting a bit quicker - or more to the point the same perceived effort is become a quicker pace. I also recover quicker

Definitely takes some getting used to intentionally running slower, you could also try listening to music that has lower BPM and run to the pace of the music?

Thanks! I had no idea about any of this stuff when I started running, I try and mix my routes up as often as I can which keeps it interesting. Music wise that's a good idea, I have various playlists depending on my mood but slower is a good plan!

  6. Got into a bit of a YouTube rabbithole last night and I now know all about aerobic and anaerobic running!

My pace is always around 4:25/km and most of my runs are in the Zone 5/4 heart rate zones (I have all this on my Garmin but have never really paid much attention to it!). I can comfortably run a half but if I want to aim for anything longer I need to slow down, but its difficult to run slower! Might try a socially distanced run with a friend to keep it at a conversational pace...

Did my furthest run in many years today (still only just over 10k ) and whilst it's good for my fitness, definitely not getting any enjoyment out of it. It's just so boring! Appreciate that this opinion won't go down well in this thread :fear:

Good effort, how about running with music or a podcast?

  8. I've got that same watch and it's great, made such a difference being able to track pace, and see things like heart rate. Also connects to my Bluetooth earphones so much easier to skip tracks on the move.

The Garmin connect app is pretty good and you can add your own workouts, not really explored it properly yet though.

  9. Going to try a late evening run tonight and see how I get on, I may try a 7am run at some point this week as the forecast looks hot but don't think I'll ever be that person!

So, bought some new trainers this week. First run yesterday, blisters!! Bugger.
Managed another run this morning in my old trainers, with cotton wool and plasters over the blisters. That worked well.

I’ve recently been doing regular 10k’s and stepped this up to an hour (12.5k) this morning.

I have a question though. An hour was just about all I could manage without taking on board a drink. I might’ve managed another 1-2k possibly.
What do people do for drinks on longer runs?
The only times I’ve ever done more than 13-14k have been on official events, so drinks are en route. I was thinking of sticking a bottle outside my house, doing 12k to finish at my house, take a drink and then try another few kms, but then there’s the mental aspect of “well, I’m home now and I gotta run off again!”
Do people take bottles with them, if so what’s the best method - one of those carrying ones with the handle, or a small bag/carrier? Any recommendations. I don’t really want to carry a bottle around but if I start doing longer distances I’ll need a solution.

I've always run with a running bottle with handle for runs over 10/12k, got a cheap karrimor one from sports direct think it's 600ml and does the job - never had a problem running with it! Proper runners tell me it's messes your movements up but doesn't for me.

Longer runs I used to either leave an extra bottle en route or always plan to run past a garage or shop and grab a bottle.

Can never get on with running belts and camelbaks seem a bit extreme for anything under a half.

  11. Struggle to run in the heat! I started in October last year and used to the cold and wet...

I'm usually a late afternoon runner so will have to delay it to avoid the heat, I've never been an early morning person but might try it...!

Additional - I really need to look at some better shoes. Anyone got any suggestions - finding it hard to consider buying when cant try

Bad timing at the moment! I went to my local running shoe shop in Wilts and were really helpful, let me try on about 30 pairs after they did my gait analysis etc!

Found Asics fit my feet much better than Brooks or other brands as my feet are slightly wide. Think there's a few specialist running shops in Bristol?

  13. Well done everyone!

I did the Bath Half in 1:44 which was good but very slow start due to amount of people!

Currently done 60k so far this week and 440k this year, still really enjoying it especially now the weather has got a bit nicer.
