  1. Well done Man City, good for an English Club to win again just a pity about the ownership/finance issues that sours it somewhat for me.

Thought Stones was a MoM candidate. Pep has transformed him from a liability into a more than capable performer on one of the World’s biggest football stages. That shows why he’s the world’s best manager.

Thought Haaland was pretty anonymous though. Begin to wonder if top European defences might have sussed how to contain him. Also thought the Man City fans seemed pretty quiet for most of the night.

Will be interesting to see what penalties will be imposed on any breaches they’re found guilty on.

I was about to say the same thing. Surely The Fellowship was a proper Rovers pub seeing its slap bang in the middle of Horfield

I think ‘The Fellowship’ was frequented by several City ‘fans’ back in the day.

None to distant Southmead certainly had more than a red tinge in the 70’s. Infact, can remember, occasionally, on the old East End the chants of Southmead/Knowle West usually followed by Rangers/Celtic. Southmead weren’t outnumbered either. Horfield was pretty mixed too, with lots of City graffiti.

It was pretty interesting living in ‘border country’ in those days with some quite surprising (to me at least) neighbourhood allegiances to red/blue. Can remember, to my cost, going into Redland which I assumed was solid City, but turned out as home ground to a bunch of Sags. Tended to tread carefully outside my patch after that somewhat uncomfortable experience! That said, knew some of the their ‘legends’ who resided in my neighbourhood, and was good friends with one of them and had more blue friends than red and still do, including best man and each others weddings.

  3. What’s going on with those ‘north of the river’ flags?

Wasn’t ‘The Fellowship’ in Filton? Last time I checked, Pucklechurch, I’d swear was north of the City Centre.

Puts paid somewhat to the great saggy myth of the Bristol divide. Much of North Bristol was in my time, and still is, ours.

TBF, I’d give them their Lockleaze and Eastville enclaves though.

  4. I don’t care whether it’s pink with orange spots, as long as it hasn’t got that ******* big Splattered Robin on the front.

Makes me cringe whenever I see it. Those players, coaches, staff wearing the stuff must be truly embarrassed. The Club would do well to remember it’s small percentages that make a difference in elite football. Wearing a clowns outfit ain’t doing us any favours. Downsize it to a small motif, preferably on the back, maybe, but that ‘in your face’ motif sizing is just woeful, and then some.

When the national press pick up on it and describes Nige, in a mocking way, looking like some Harley-riding biker you know something is badly wrong.

Do you think they've considered how, many years ago, the raised level platform which forms the Memorial Ground was created ?

Is the terra firma sub-structure suitable for the load bearing pillars needed if an "Atyeo" sized grandstand is to be constructed ?

    Think I’ve sussed it now.

The stand will be two-tiered due to ground stability issues. The lower tier, the expensive tickets, subterranean viewing their  ‘Championship ready’ sprinkler system. The upper tier, above ground, the cheap tickets with a view of a pillar, with ‘pillar and pitch glimpses’ for the lowest priced. That explanation would seem to fit nicely with their ‘pre-school child’ stand graphic and increased capacity claims.

This is a point, relevant I think, to the planning application. I didn't realise the ground over looked nearby property so much either, never having been there. If the ground was in a dip, raising the roof height would be less likely to cause complaint by the neighbours, but if the new roof height affected the sky line then they can't just assume that planning permission is a given. Maybe that is why they are in constant touch with the council, to avoid refusal and delays.

I am guessing that the new stand will move a lot nearer the goal so that the roof line will be at a lower angle relative to nearby houses.

Normally, a lot of work on computers would be undertaken to calculate angles between properties to ensure any potential loss of light is calculated and design adjusted to ensure ‘acceptable levels’. Additionally, detailed analysis would normally be done to ensure anybody new development is not  ‘overbearing’ on neighbouring properties.

An alternative approach, to quote myself at a public inquiry ‘this development was designed on the back of a fag packet, the only problem being they didn’t even manage that’.

Wonder which design method has been adopted for The Sags Cow Shed?

  7. Semi-familiar. Would have been near to him on the East End back in the day.

Happy shared memories and sleep well lad.

As an aside, the picture doesn’t look the same guy from my hazy recollection,  but mention of badges and scarfs around the wrists. Was there not a chap called ‘flagship’ (maybe just by our group!) who frequented The Gate at that time and subsequent decades?

All I've seen so far of this "new stand" is just an "artist's impression" or for want of a better word, sketch [like on the back of a fag packet].

To submit that for planning you would need detailed dimensional plans for the structure. I'm thinking of drainage, toilet facilities and whether this blocks anyone's light or impacts on the residents behind the goal area.

I also walk my dog along the back of it early in the morning to see the frogs and toads that cross the area and early evening to see the bats that fly around and nest there. They are an endangered species don't you know.

    All very tinpot

I’ve heard the Horfield branch of Greater Crested Newts regularly march up and down that footpath too.

  9. Our history is littered with ‘returnees’ who have failed to fully live up to expectations second time around, in on or off the field roles - whether loans to permanent (the Chelsea trio, Tomlin et al) or permanent to permanent (Joe Jordan).

There are occasional exceptions. Hopefully, Joe B would be one of those. On the ‘hope’ side, the guy is super-intelligent and highly likeable. He was very fit and athletic. There is a ‘risk’ side though, the mental health aspect and whether that hunger for football and success really does still burn bright. I suspect even Joe doesn’t fully know that - but, logically, he may well view it that if he can’t do it for his hometown Club in familiar surroundings with family support, he wouldn’t be able to do it anywhere else. The other ‘risk’ is that Nige doesn’t know how to play him…for info. he just hasn’t the positional awareness to play full-back, so left/central midfield please.

Let’s hope for an MA-style ‘vigorous’ assessment before we commit so neither parties end up regretting the move. That said, on an emotional level, I’d really love to welcome him back and for him to play a big part in pushing us on.

They can build it without planning permission which can retrospectively be gained after the build.

Whether they would be allowed to use it is another matter maybe ?

    Stop Notice or Injunction anyone?

If the height of the new stand is higher than the tent it replaces or capacity is increased by virtue of these works it might get a little interesting.

Obviously, they are as confident in getting all the necessary consents before the start of next Season as they were about ‘coming to get us’ this Season. Glad they seem to be still employing the legal bods who were so successful with the Sainsbury’s case.

  11. Pretty sure Holden wasn’t Steve’s choice.

Steve did an interview post-Holden where he said something along the lines that short term success doesn’t necessarily reflect in long term achievement. Think he was alluding to the fact that Holden got off to a flier and then - predictably in Steve’s mind - it fell apart (although injuries were a factor to be fair to Holden). Steve said it in a way that it was pretty obvious someone had said to him ‘told you so’ in justifying their decision when Holden was initially doing well.

I‘d speculate that Jon and Ashton were the two behind the appointment. Jon likely on the basis of a non-confrontational manager and, critically, Ashton to ensure his almost complete control of the Club - Steve was implementing his own exit strategy by taking a back seat in Club affairs at that time - was not threatened. I could be totally wrong, but the snippets that Steve lets out make me think quite possibly not.

To be fair, this is one of the most enjoyable reads I've had for a while.

Not just the result and description of our performance but found myself chuckling all the way through.

I'd like the author added to our summer transfer targets!

    Agree.

Accurate, humorous and written with the passion of a real fan.

Think they’re where we were 5 years ago. Pity their supporters, apart from the ****hole with our flag. It’s a long old haul back to becoming average -with potential - again.

Excellent 10/10. Top of the class.

  13. My immediate thought is that we’ve suffered seasons of pain, now for the glory.

Solid foundations laid. At last we have a team with an identity, commitment, consistency, pace and power. A few tweaks in personnel and we have take off.

Struth, if we can’t now match the likes of Luton, Boro, Sheff Utd, Sunderland et alI I give up.

  14. I think your supporters might have been ‘well- managed’ by others back in the day!

If memory serves me correctly, we had you at home early days in our new First Division experience. I think your lot assumed we were country-bumpkins and brought a couple of hundred ‘lads’ to take the place over.  However, they were run ragged around the town by our mob all day. For future matches with you at ‘The Gate’ we only saw a few bubble-hat wearing families.

Incredibly ........even after over 5 years, clever Exeter still get some money   when Ollie Watkins gets goals...must have struck a smart deal?

… and they’ve invested a good % of their ‘winnings’ in a highly impressive training centre building at an already very impressive training ground.

    Pity about Saturday’s result though.
