  1. Agreed, but as far as we can tell Steve Gibson was a lone voice when he raised objections about Derby. Steve L was quick to have a go about the trivial 'spygate ' nonsense but we have heard nothing about his view of a club circumventing FFP when he plays by the rules. Which leads me to assume he is not bothered. Shaun Harvey, who has a somewhat chequered past, was forced out as EFL CEO of course. Perhaps somebody at Ashton Gate has their eye on that job in due course. Though I can't think who.
  2. The problem there is that the EFL is a trade association not a governing body. This is in a sense an offshoot of the FA ceding its power to the Premier League, meaning there is in many respects no governing body. A trade association is likely to be dominated by its most powerful members - witness the richest PL clubs getting a bigger share of the TV money from next season for instance. Which means that the most powerful members are more likely to get away with gaming the system. Woe betide smaller clubs that step out of line though, they will be made an example of so the EFL can claim that FFP works.
  3. Only £3m more than we paid them for Matty Taylor though.
  4. Complications may have arisen from their change of name to Steve Bruce's Sheffield Wednesday.
  5. You'd have to have a heart of stone not to laugh. (with apologies to Oscar Wilde)
  6. I'm not at fait with the accounting niceties but the idea that pre-tax losses of £57m is somehow ok doesn't suggest financial responsibility to me. If that is the case, with his expertise and resources I'm sure SL could manipulate our position accordingly. Except he is too honest and we are not a big enough club to get a free pass. Not that I think football is a cesspit of dubious practices or anything.
  7. I take your point, and it's always the non-football staff who take the hit. I don't suppose any of the club hierarchy lost much sleep over that. It didn't stop Bruce signing ever more expensive players then complaining he wasn't given enough to spend. How many staff could have been paid from the wages wasted on Bolasie and Hogan alone? Let alone Terry! Absolutely agree on the American model though. It's ironic that the home of capitalism red in tooth and claw has better financial controls.
  8. I agree to the extent that I have long suspected that one of the real purposes of FFP was to entrench the advantage of the richest clubs. By the same token, though, do you object to the advantage given to clubs who get parachute payments, especially those who are still profligate despite having that advantage?
  9. Wolves lost a reported £57m last year and £23m the year before with no consequences. The media would have us believe their progress is some kind of fairytale of course. FFP is meaningless without proper controls and independent in-season enforcement. The problem is that the EFL is a trade association not a governing body. If any club ever gets really severe sanctions it's a safe bet it will be some little league 2 club not one of the powerful Championship clubs.
  10. Your last 3 words are the key ones. The EFL keep kicking the can down the road as far as Brum are concerned. How much more reluctant will they be to grasp the nettle when it comes to Villa?
  11. Actually it strikes me they could get one over on Spurs by erecting a cheese tent, Spurs having abandoned the plan they now claim they never had. I'm thinking out of date Dairylea triangles.
  12. So they're in a race against time to get their screen installed before Spurs open their new stadium. The only 2 clubs in the country making major stadium improvements lest we forget.
  13. By that logic no manager should ever pick an inexperienced player either. He doesn't come across as awfully bright does he?
  14. It came from Mark Clemmit , who knows his stuff. Will set an important precedent if true. Could the EFL for instance deduct points from Brum but not Villa?
  15. Just rumoured on 5 Live that a decision is imminent on Brum and that it will be a ' sporting sanction', i.e. a points deduction.
  16. I wouldn't be surprised if there has been a conversation with the EFL. "Don't worry, you won't get a points deduction, we'll agree a purely symbolic fine then you can carry on as before. If we want to make an example of somebody we'll go after some penniless League 2 club." Cynical , moi??
  17. LBR can replace NLBR. Though not for long.
  18. Tanya Oxtoby is a very impressive woman: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/nov/16/psychology-tanya-oxtoby-bristol-city-women-wsl
  19. So if he tripled his wages we're paying him £600 a week?
  20. The astonishing thing, if the thread is representative of the forum in general, is that the majority still seem to support Wael.
  21. It's the Mem. You can tell by the size of the crowd.
  22. They have the tents already but do they have desert ready sprinklers?
  23. We hit something of a low under SO'D when drawing at home with Orient was treated as a triumph. Anybody who complains about us currently might care to remember that. Me included.
