I do think there will be a reduction of sales next season although if you read this thread we'll be lucky to sell one..........will be interesting to see where we end up. I reckon sub-13K is very likely, just a case of how much less. All down to a handful of people, and I exclude Liam Manning from that list tbh.

A lot less imo - I think you're hugely underestimating the mutiny we're about to see.

It's been rubbish entertainment down there for many years (average 8 home wins per season in the last 9 seasons?) and I think with the diabolical treatment of NP and a less than inspiring replacement this is the year fans finally follow through on their threats not to renew by actually doing it.

So many fans are pissed off with Bristol City FC and the continuing dreadful decisions that drain all hope and I wouldn't be at all surprised at a mass desertion by several thousand.

On a technical note it doesn't bother me hugely but the club can be fined and I think it is technically a criminal offence, it may bring an automatic ban but...

If, as described by the OP, they were '2 little boys who couldn't have been more than 11 years old', they may not even have reached the age of criminal responsibility.

Give them a good telling off, but to manhandle and ban children seems concerning and OTT to me.

    I don't think so Dave.

You or @Nogbad the Bad from on here, I think.

Thanks SJ, but I prefer being an ordinary supporter and can't think of anything worse than getting involved behind the scenes with the hierarchy at your favourite club. Put you off for life I should think.

Too old and knackered now anyway - to think I was relatively young when I started posting on OTIB!

From those on here I reckon @GrahamC would fit the bill as a straight talker, and I imagine @CliftonCliff might shake things up a bit too.

A fan representative - isn't that what the Supporters Trust was originally all about?

Only time I've been to Portman Road was Brett Pitman's first game. I remember he got his foot stuck in some netting behind the goal. 4.5 hours each way on CATS. I think we lost 2-0.

    We go again…

Only time I've been there was April '78, Ipswich's last home game before their (winning) appearance in the F.A. Cup Final.

Pretty well a full house with Wembley flags prepared and waving, not many City fans.

City lost 1-0 and Bobby Robson was on the pitch at the end - unusual in those days - as the Ipswich fans gave their team and manager a noisy and colourful Wembley send off.

I have to say when he played for us looked very ordinary, I don't think anyone was too upset when we let him go. Hindsight's a wonderful thing!

I wouldn't say that, many very much liked the look of Szmodics, couldn't understand why LJ had never given him a proper chance, and thought the club would regret letting him go.

Others just said he was an Eisa/Adelukan type punt which hadn't worked out and well done the club and MA for making a profit.

There was a general acceptance that we had too many midfielders, DH wasn't going to play him (either), so better for all parties if he moved on ... but make sure there was a good sell on.

That's my take anyway from what became his departure thread from Aug/Sept 2020:

We will be doing well to stay out of bottom six this season.

Notice our double winning ex manager SC has started dragging FGR off the bottom, from what looked like an impossible position not long ago.

In a managerial career spanning 26 years Cotts has never overseen a relegation and no doubt in my mind he'd have kept City up that season.

A disgraceful decision to boot him out of AG, on a par with getting rid of NP, 2 managers far more capable than their successors.

A hell of as job to take on at FGR but if anyone can keep them up Cotts can.

I would have thought the aim of the board/owners is to get promotion. The problem with the way that manning wants to play football is that you need probably need a minumum of two midfielders with massive quality in creativity and attacking play, and probably two forwards that can actually beat a man and run at players and take on shots and finish.

All that will probably cost in excess of 20m in transfer fees alone, probably more. The likes of leicester leeds and southampton can play that way and be succesful in this division because they either already have these players or can afford to purchase them because they have the short term budget afforded to them to do so.

Furthermore to then have any hope of staying up playing possession football in the prem you'd probably need to sign 11 players at 20m a pop or face coming straight back down with hardly any points just like burnley. It just doesn't seem like the man or formula to take us where we want to go with the situation and status we find ourselves in.

At best I can see us spunking a relative amount of money on mediocre players to get us to an average finish and be stuck where we are, at worst we will continue the current trajectory and end up going down with a whimper next season.

Manning in the main has served up a one dimensional turgid crap brand of football.

I'm in the get rid camp, but not quite at the point where I feel the situation has got ridiculous and he just has to go. If we sleepwalk ourselves into a relgation scrap or if given a full pre season and a number of new signings and we still look and play how we are currently after 5 games or so then I'll be firmly shouting for him to go.

I think he is out of his depth and one dimensional and taking us backwards, there is an ounce of hope that maybe he can turn us around with a couple of astute signings but that is hope more than expectation and not based on much evidence of what has served up for most of his time here so far.

Sorry, I know you're just articulating your thoughts but if you think, 'Manning in the main has served up a one dimensional turgid crap brand of football.' and 'I think he is out of his depth and one dimensional and taking us backwards' why would you give him the pre season and a number of new signings when he - his uninspiring personality, and, as you say, his turgid style of football - seem to be at the root of the problem?

These things seem very much ingrained and unlikely to change and, if we allow LM to shape next season's squad we'll have lumbered the next coach/manager with new signings he may not want with little or no more money to make further changes, and it's another frustrating and wasted season ahead.

I cannot see things improving significantly, some managers fit AG, some very much don't, and the board need to be decisive and ruthless for once, whether it's soon or at the end of the season.

Oh, I forgot, they were pretty ruthless with Cotts and NP.

I always find these views of retrospection fascinating. With JET, we were in league one, hence why he looked so good. Tomlin, we were in a relegation scrap.

We’re in a far far better position now, than when either of them were here. Although I absolutely can’t disagree on the chore part….

As supporters we can't do much about which division City are in.

What we remember are great games, outstanding goals, players who got us off our seats, and in that respect the division we're in is of secondary importance.

The Millwall turnout at the Charlton game at AG was part of a long running feud between “certain” City fans and Millwall at the time.

Yep, I was at Corinthian Casuals in '83 when Millwall turned up.

Was this the start of the long running feud you talk of?

There had always been an air of trouble when City played Millwall, I remember it in the 70's and I've heard stories going right back to the mid 60's, but this was on match days and Millwall's yob element had stronger rivalries with other clubs, so why did it become a long running feud with City in particular?

At the time of the Corinthian Casuals match we'd only played Millwall in 1 season - 81/82 - since '75, so did something notable happen at one of those games in 81/82 to start it off?

In all honesty Noggers...how many sports these days do you watch and come away thinking I've been thoroughly entertained?

You get the occasional ones...but on average, most sports are dull as dishwater these days.

    Everything is too perfect.

Technology, science, coaching etc, has pretty much nullified any ' entertainment'.

Because its the imperfections that create excitement in sport.

The more precise and ' perfect' it becomes...the less entertaining.

If LM set up as you'd like...there would be lots of goal mouth action...in our own box.

    It's just how it's become.

Television hasn't helped either. Full saturation.

I've given up watching most sports, even football apart from City. I find the PL and international football really boring these days.

Maybe an age thing - the passion of youth probably helped to keep me going to AG throughout our descent down the divisions, but that was a long time ago and these days, while some success would be obviously be welcome, getting to the play offs is not the be all and end all for me, or even 'season ending' because we accept we're not getting there - enjoying going to AG because the football on offer at least has some entertainment value is much more important.

Let's start by thrashing Cardiff and Swansea please LM!

I sort of agree and to be fair, I think @Davefevs has said he isn’t fussed about the styles as long as we win.

Gary Johnson’s football wasn’t always slick but the promotion and play off season wears a brilliant time to be a fan. (Unless you are @Robbored.)

Dave gets his enjoyment from watching football (studying it in his case) in a different way to me which is fair enough. I think the average fan sees it in a much less analytical way and craves excitement but I am also largely happy as long as we win - at least we must have had a goal to celebrate, and have succeeded in defending a lead.

Agree about GJ, not that many goals in that play off season but he got the most out of committed team, lots of excitement and a very enjoyable time to be a fan.

  13. Over 25 arrests at that game, always stuck in my mind because the atmosphere and amount of trouble was completely unexpected.

Millwall, and apparently others turned up, but no idea why this game was chosen, it's not exactly a common event for fans of different clubs to mix like that, especially with Charlton and Millwall being less than 5 miles apart and rivals themselves presumably.

Remember watching the replay from the East End on a big screen, another grim evening at the Gate.

  14. It's a very well written article but I'm afraid I don't share Dave's fascination with tactical aspects of the modern game.

High block, transition, possession percentages, passes per sequence etc etc leave me cold. I just want to see City set out to play attacking football at AG with as much goalmouth action as possible. In other words to be entertained.

Modern coaches like LM should remember football is a spectator sport and if their cagey approach doesn't at least yield the 3 points - the one consolation for a dull match -  it can more often than not be a frustrating bore for the average fan who's gone down there to see some action, let off some steam, and be entertained.

    Who do you want relegated?

    QPR or Millwall?

Not bothered about QPR but would welcome a break from Millwall, let Rovers enjoy their company for a year or two.

Ideally, however unlikely, Stoke or Swansea to join them, with QPR and Wednesday staying up.
