The Season Ahead

Having just got back I wanted to say that PBoro had done their homework and worked incredibly hard to close down City the minute we had the ball.

This stopped us passing it through MF and stopped all supply up front except for those annoying channel balls, pumped aimlessly about.

We didn't have the guile to work around this and perhaps not having big Ade on the now extra long bench was a bit of a error?

Both our wingers worked fairly hard but played very poorly, and McCallister is going to get found out this season if he plays in the relaxed way he did tonight.

It was down to Louis to both drive on and get the goal (s) to have our centre back scoring from open play says how much effort he put in tonight.

Unfortunately the ref started slowly but managed to warm up to his now customary random, useless performance, issuing cards when there was no need (carey)

and letting challenges go that deserved a yellow. - how many times do we get that bloke at AG?!!

All in all it took our goal to settle us and allow the lads to pick it up a bit. PBoro played well and had some lively players who continued to cause us problems.

after the equalizer we took the game to them much more, but were still vulnerable to the breaks they kept trying.

My worry is that we will face this issue many more times this season as teams will know how we play and tactically spoil our plans, as such I'd like to see us being more capable of adapting to this, or else we might struggle.

Gavin Williams looked good and mobile in MF, a high point, as was the lad Riberio, who looked to have twisted his knee quite badly (ligament damage I would guess) when his foot caught in the turf as he turned. bad luck for the lad.

we still need some more options in the team, and injuries are going to find us wanting very quickly.

still a win is a win.

Agree with all of this. It is concerning that they were able to frustrate us! But I'm also fairly convinced city could of played alot better! Really want to see williams strat as a centre midfielder aswell!!

Yes I thought it was a poor performance and P'boro looked the better side for a lot of the game. To me we do look short in the creativity dept and the front two are going to have to work very hard to hit the net regularly if we continue in this way. Hopefully we can play ourselves into some form and keep winning in the meantime. Oh for a Nick Carle with two feet!!! yes I know he didn't score but he did drive at the heart of the opposition, and I think at the moment we look a lesser side without him. Hopefully GW will give us that bit extra, and a fit Marv. For me also, Ivan still isn't doing the bizzo and we look a better team when he is in his sub role.

City were simply not creative enough in midfield - certainly in the first half when apart from Johnson (who has had better games) there was no guile to provide anything for the front men.

McIndoe seemed to be playing too centrally and rowing with his opposite and was eventually booked beacuse of it. Sproule was a waste of a starting place and a 15 mins spot as an impact player is probably what he can look forward to.

Skuse broke up the play when he could but didn't stand out with teriffic passes or runs like Elliot does. He needs to be more productive with the final ball imo.

Tonights game shouted out for a creative player like Noble but he never made it on.

Defensively City looked ok - but were badly outplayed by the move leading upto the Posh goal.No-one got in a telling tackle and Weale was left stranded.

So sorry for Ribiero. He looked very composed for the time that he was on. Some nice touches and simple lay offs was all we saw but even from such a small amount of playing time - it was obvious what a decent player this lad could be. Lets hope his injury isn't that serous. :fingerscrossed:

But another win is all we can ask for but how I yearn or a convincing performance.

An excellent write up. A good result in the league cup considering that Gary Johnson usually specialises in promotions rather than cup competitions. I'm hoping that Derby continue their rubbish league form against us on Saturday - 3 more points toward promotion and promotion is all I'm really interested in for this season.
