As things stand (potential achievements aside), who should be considered the better captain for City?

Rob Newman (centre-back/midfield 1981-1991)

394 games, 54 goals

Promotion in 83/84 to old 3rd, and in 89/90 to old div 2.

League cup semi-finalist 88/89.

Testimonial for City 1991.

Signed for Norwich for 600k, finishing 3rd in top flight, and entered Uefa cup.

or

Louis Carey (centre-back/right-back 1995-2004, 2005-present)

436 games, 11 goals

Promotion to Championship 97/98 & 06/07

Joined Coventry on a free, returned after 6 months.

Who do you rate higher and why?

Newman for me. He could play in defence or midfield, scored from free-kicks, generally he was a better all-round player. Carey's a good player, but he's fairly one dimensional, in fact my main criticism of him is that he tries to do too much.

Newman was a fantastic leader just like Louis, but scored more (I remember the screaming freekick against Wigan in the lashing wind and rain)and also could play further up the park. However Louis is more mobile and he only tries to do too much when the rest of 'em are doing too little! To see Louis breaking forward is impressive, so he actually edges it for me.

No disrespect to Louis, but Rob Newman all day.

Played with distinction at the highest level

Both different types of defenders, strenghts and weaknesses etc., etc.

Carey a bit more in your face, blood and guts type, Newman on the other hand was taller and heavier, yet he had a classy touch to his play, got forward a bit more, hence his goal tally. I always thought he would come back to Ashton Gate as well.

Yep, Newman just nicks it for me too.

As said before, both great servants to our great club. Although we lost on penalties to Mansfield in our second appearance in two years at Wembley in 1987, the thing that stood out for me on that lush pitch was Biff's performance. It was when the 'sweeper' position was in vogue and his performance that day was 'Hoddle-esque'.

Watched them both

Always thought biff was very slow

couldnt beleive it when we got £600k for him

My vote would go to post coventry Carey

Carey's form since his return has been nothing sort of superb and personally I think he's been the bedrock on which we've been able to drive forward over the last few years. Without his consistency, bravery and ability I don't think we'd have progressed as quickly as we have. His form in front in front of Basso have allowed the Brazillian to improve and become the keeper he is.

Also, I didn't watch Newman play much, but he was always a favourite of mine as a kid and was devastated when he left. Having said that, I have a friend now who was a season ticket holder at Norwich when Newman played for them and their fans always thought of him as a bit of a cult hero - i.e. they kind of saw him as their equivalent of Bas Savage. His comment was "he had no pace and the turning circle of an ocean liner." Admittedly, he was nearly 30 when he signed for Norwich.

Biff did help to set up Jeremy Goss's great goal against Bayern Munich, though...

Different types of player.

Newman was more much more versatile than Carey as his goal return shows. Personally I thought Newman brought more to the team from midfield. He talents were wasted in defence imo.

Carey being a specialist defender is probably a tad better than Newman was in the back four but when it comes to midfield Newman wins hands down.

Biff boy for me

Could play anywhere across the back 4 - and I mean anywhere but could also be a very good midfielder and like Robbored I think I preffered him there

Made his debut as an 18yr old on that fatefull night in 82 when the youngsters were all we had to put on the pitch (after the Ashton gate 8 business)

Played a blinder that day inspiring the other youngsters around him and showing his leadership qualities when not only the team but the whole club needed them

Can you honestly see Louis in midfield?

Being an old f$rt, I'll for Biff, although as a central defender Carey shades it, being more mobile. But Rob was such a hugely gifted player on the ball, and had a tremendous shot (volley vs Newport, eg) and really could play anywhere in the team, but as posted above, best as a rumbling central midfielder.

Both excellent servants to the club, don't know what Carey's like as a person, know Rob was a top bloke, fans loved him, and he really appeared to enjoy his games. Whatever happened to him?

Let's get Newman involved down the Gate!

Surprised they got rid of him, didn't he have to play in a reserve game at the tail-end of last season because they were so desperate for players?

I thought this thread might bomb, but some good food for thought in the end.

If Newman comes back as a coach, I'll take full credit for it!

Interesting that there isn't much comment on their leadership qualities, and therefore the better club captain.

As someone else has already said Carey has been awesome since he came back, but I've got to go for Biff.

Is it me, or do heroes when you're a kid stick in the mind more? The fact that I can remember Biff in the old Hirerite shirt means he shades it - crap way of thinking about it, but there you go!

Two very different players as has already been pointed out. Newman was our very own Steve Bruce and just as ugly.

Rob Newman was a real fans hero he was an immense man mountain and popped up with a few goals too.

Carey for me over the last two years has been nothing short of inspired.

Tough one level pegging for me.

If Carey could add a few more goals to his game he will be out in front and i personally think he will get double figures this season.

I was gutted when Newman went to Norwich.

As a player Newman wins easily and his performances and value at the higher level support this.Less prone to errors and a better footballing brain gave him more presence wherever positioned on the pitch.Blessed with a thumping drive he made the very best of his attributes and although slightly deficient in pace compensated for it with his reading of the game and a wholehearted approach which won universal praise from team-mates and opponents.

He already is in double figures - he's got 11 for his whole career so far!

If you mean double figures for the whole season, well, let's just say I'd be pleasantly surprised to see that ever happen...
