Always Believe

One Team

A quick side topic away from the debate regarding the on the pitch pluses and minuses:

I thought the atmosphere last night in the second half when we were clawing our way back into the game was superb.

Of particular note once again was our newest anthem, 'Always Believe'. It was sung a few times but there was one point last night just after Trundle scored where it sounded and felt like everyone was singing it in unison and it was ear-splittingly loud.

I don't know if the Brum fans noticed but I can't help thinking they must've been impressed with the volume.

It feels like its our 'You'll never walk alone', our 'Forever blowing bubbles', our 'Delilah' - long may it continue.

One Team

drink up thee zider is our never walk alone!

Its ok I suppose I still prefer the days of come on you reds - that used to be as loud as any ground in the league

Don't think so. Man Utd use "Believe" but even that was more recent than our use of "Always Believe".

And as for those words with that tune - that's ours.

:tumbleweed: Sorry believe was used by England, Man Utd and the tune, Rochdale and the Sun amongst others all before it became associated with some City fans. Do the Dolman early leavers believe?

Always believe is a Bristol City song, people who are saying it isnt should hang their heads in shame.

It all came about with Adriano Basso and his ''Believe'' speeches and gestures.

Infact, I think the song was started by our forums Tin's and Collis on the way to the ground after having a few beers and were singing it until everyone joined in at the back of the EastEnd.

the tune came from FC United as per the youtube link above. The original tune is Sloop John.B by The Beach Boys

Then Man Utd fans sang it to Ronaldo ("that boy Ronaldo, made England look shite...etc")

Then we took it and changed a few lyrics

Yeah I know about the tune, but the ''Always Believe'' part is ours, no doubt.

The tune originated from Liverpool fans after their Champions League win in 2005 where they sang ''we've won it five times. We've won it five times. In Istanbul, we won it 5 times''.

United fans cobbled together a similiar version to reflect their two European Cup victories and then adapted it again for their '' he plays on the left. He plays on the right. That boy Ronaldo he'll make you/made England look shite''. A few other clubs have also adapted it including Arsenal (for Adebayor) and obviously ourselves. I love ''always believe'', but unfortunately the tune is not unique to us and 'drink up thee cider' will always be our song.

I think they are sung in different contexts anyway. 'Always Believe' is a song to inspire the team and 'drink up thee cider' is more celebratory in my eyes.

Some people are never happy are they :disapointed2se:

I say again ''ALWAYS BELIEVE'', and Mars and The Sun didn't use the chant did they?

I asssociate it with other clubs because it is ripped off, totally unoriginal and linked with all the finer points of the game like gross commercialisation. Alright if you are Christian i spose but please stop trying to ram it down the throats of fans who grew up with drink up thy cider because its your favourite ditty inspired by another club.

Fair enough, you don't like the song. We will agree to disagree.

I feel that ''ALWAYS BELIEVE'' and ''DRINK UP THY CIDER'' are two seperate songs for different moods. Always believe will inspire like no other song we sing. Like liverpools you'll never walk alone.

Its just a way that we can get to the players and tell them we have faith and we are 100% behind them... Singing drink up thy cider wouldn't do the same job.

I can't see how inspiring the team and letting them know we believe in them is ever a bad thing, something that drink up thy cider will never do.

Just to finish, I'm not slating Drink Up Thy Cider in anyway, I just feel that they are 2 songs for different moods.

Frome - It's not about religion. It's about belief in the players, in the club, the manager etc.

And it's not taking away from Drink Up Thy Zider at all. Drink Up Thy Zider will always be played on the PA, always sung in celebration and such moments.

I have Always Believed that our anthem was and is the fantastic One For The Bristol City not to keen on the new version except the change of words from AD to GJ (did you see what i did there)

Drink up is Great but its a Wurzels song not specifcally written for us its a zumerzet song and i lurve it but for me its One for and Come On You Reds they are extremley rousing and i often try to start these 2 up with limited sucess

Way back in the late 90's me and a few mates that sat in Atyeo D block used to get the stand bumping with renditions of Red Army and i also think that the old super Joe song should be dusted off and renamed super Gary

It goes like this for the young uns that don't know it

Gary Super Gar

Gary Super Gar

Gary Super Gar

Super Gary Johnson

And we sang it when JJ came out of the tunnel i think this would be a fitting testament to our greatest leader in years

To be honest I can take or leave most songs - anything sounds good if the whole crowd sings it in unison.

For me, I like it that we have something which is uniquely Bristol and Bristol City.

Thats the Wurzels' Drink up thy cider or other songs from them.

Living in London, that is what we are known for and I like it.

The Welsh call us Wurzels, the Forest mate of mine said he thought it was fantastic in our game a couple of seasons ago that we ran out in the second half to "I am a cider drinker".

To me, that's unique to us rather than a similar tune to other clubs with words changed.

My take on this subject is that Drink Up thee Cider will always be our anthem. The Always Believe song is our song and it reflects the feeling around the club generated by the success of GJ and its Basso's motto. Its basically the song for this era, I would say!

Always Believe is our song for a new generation of fans...

'Always Believe' sums up the last 8 years, not just the last 2.

A lot of us managed to 'Always Believe' in the difficult days Tins went through, when (MOST OF US!) defended a club legend despite sitting in the relegation zone of the 3rd tier; AND after the Brighton play-off final, when 11,000 of us still put our hands in our pockets to watch another season of lower league football; AND during the spent years toying with promotion in a league we should have long been out of; AND now that everyone is dooming us to second-season-syndrome...

I bought my first ST in 98/99 and have had one since, and 'Always Believe' sums up the fans for me.

Lets get it onto the badge and on the bottom on the back of the shirts next season rather than the St.Georges Flag.

We're Bristol City - We Always Believe!!!

I feel you don't Believe Eamer... (note how Believe takes on a capital letter).

Feel the faith. Play-offs again this season. BELIEVE!!

No, I believe we'll have a good season. I was one of the few that said we will be looking at Top 4 again this time round but this 'Always Believe' stuff is getting a bit too much. The song is terrible, the bloody banner the ball boys walk around the pitch with and now this guy suggesting we get it printed onto the bottom of all shirts and onto the club badge? Is everyone going MAD?!

I know it's crazy - the other week I saw a City fan at Ashton Gate smile.
