Supporting Bristol City

In no order and some may have already been said:

McIndoe against Palace in the play offs realising that we were def going to wembley, I just crumpled into a heap then, had no energy left.

Roberts 2nd against Hartlepool in the play offs whilst being in the East End, it was insane

There's some obscure goal Goater scored against Wrexham I think where we conceeded a late goal to go 1-1 and Goater got a last minute header during another one of our failed promotion bids

Beating Bolton on a Friday night in our last time in this league

Having bet Roberts to score and City win 3 -1 (odd 45 to 1 or so) against Notts County 4/5 yrs ago (might be more memory going) image my delight when Roberts did score first and Murray scored in the 92nd minute to bring the result home.

2 minutes later the whole ground erupted apart from me, head in hands not believing it, Murray had banged another one in for 4 -1

I think those two minutes summed up everything that is City- every emotion possible during a game, during the season and supporting the reds... hear we go again on the 2009 /2010 roller-coaster.

Another moment from the past, being searched at Fulham's Craven Cottage with a boiled egg in my pocket that wasn't quite set....oh Happy days

Lets the memories continue

Great to read all the other snippets

Been going since 1987

Best moments for me.

Tin man at Anfield (was there)

Carl Shutt scoring four against Fulham

The 3 against Chelsea in the FA cup

Bramell lane in the play offs, we sent them down.

all goals against the gas

play off win over Hartlepool

Equaliser against Mansfield in the freight rover

Worse moments for me.

Being several goals down in 20mins against Walsall in the play off final replay (was there).

End of season defeat against the gas which sent them up (was there also)

Brighton goal in play off final

Any rovers goal against us

8/ phenomenal volley by Jacki on the first game of the season - 3-3 can't remember who it was against

Portsmouth. Jacki scored two and Cole got the other. One of those days when the natural understanding between two quality players shone through.

Many of mine have been mentioned, but Kevin Mabbutt's hat-trick in the 3-1 win at Old Trafford will always stick with me. (And the bewilderment of the people around us who had expected to see an easy home win).

Ray Cashley's goal against Hull. Watched it from the EE. As I remember it the ball bounced over their keeper Jeff Wealands (?) who was left totally stranded having come out to near the edge of his box.

Also a goal by Gerry Sharpe against Blackburn where he flicked the ball up and headed in from close range.

After being taken by my neighbour to watch the gas, my cousins decided I needed salvation and took me to watch City v Mansfield Nov 64, stood on a wooden box behind the goal in the East End and watched Jantzen Derrick equalise, the rest they say is history.

Many many fantastic moments, but seeing Terry Cooper crying during the interview at Wembley is something I will never forget.

6. Gary Shelton last minute winner at Brighton.

I took a sickie for that one and got a verbal the next day after being spotted on the midweek match...

Ha!

We had a carfull and someone had decided to nick a fire extinguisher from a petrol station on the way to the game......

Then on the homeward journey (on dual carriageway just outside Brighton) it went off accidentaly in the back of the car - sand everywhere! - like smoke it were.........we larfed our pants off later if not at the time :noexpression:

Cheesley's famous "if I don't score in the next 2 games" message

Long trips back from York & Carlisle

2 nil down at half time, won 3 - 2 v Fulham - Garland hat trick I believe ....

The best day perhaps, that first game in the First Division v Arsenal and seeing the team in the old cafe next to the ground in the morning before the coaches departed, having cuppa and playing table football........the glory and splendor of the Highbury stadium, the match, the goal.......what a start to a season

Memories

Think this thread could run and run

Gordon Low (a Scot), could play in defence or midfield. Terry Bush played both in defence and centre forward in his day. Built like the proverbial outhouse and a kick like a donkey. Also a lovely guy, very down to earth but then in those days footballers were not so separated from us ordinary folk.

Alan Skirton doing his step overs before Ronaldo was born, he was a big guy as well

John Galley volleying in from a corner edge of box top corner

Bobby Kellard/Gerry Gow dominating the middle and the pitch

Gibbo in goal 1,2,3,(4,?) up

Trips to CARDIFF on the trains :bruce_h4h:

Living and breathing :city: to almost every ground in the country, many long since gone.

Having a ST on centre line for 1st 2 yrs of Dolman Stand (that was enough, sorry Dolman dwellers)

I nearly got sacked for going to the Millwall and Hull matches, I think they were held in midweek because of the three day week and power strikes of the 70's.

The Hull game was the one where Ray Cashley scored with his drop kick.

My own favourites were the Hirst and Ritchie goals at Eastville, and the 5-4 at Mansfield, even though I was listening on the radio. There can be nothing like a good comeback when all seems lost.

With reference to saturdays opponents.

Deepdale away when Watford had to lose to Fulham to make us champions and they didn't. Home when they were winning and the g*s were losing at Crapdiff to blow the play offs. Mass congas across the pitch as they went up as champions that day.

For more unreliable memories. Old Lags Corner.

Haven't seen as much as most of you but the highlight for me thus far was actually Marc Goodfellow's equaliser against Hartlepool. On the brink of missing out on a trip to Cardiff and the little guy pops up with a header from no where to put us back in the game. I can't understand why everyone rates Roberts' winner more highly! When we equalised that late on there was such a sudden and explosive change in atmosphere I honestly don't think i've ever been so emotional in my life. Roberts' goal just topped it all off!

Amazing! :winner_third_h4h:

The evening game against Leeds in the pea souper of a fog that got abandoned around half time. Was in the east end and City were attacking the park end and we couldn't see beyond the 18 yard box.

Nobody had a clue what was going on up the pitch, as the players just disappeared into the gloom. I seem to remember City spending a fair amount of time in Leeds half, so there wasn't much to see. The 'enders amused themselves by letting out a massive cheer every so often and started singing one nil, one nil, then two nil etc. I think it got to about 10 by the end and every now and then we'd get the we all forking hate fog song.

A bit of a laugh, but that was probably the most ridiculous playing conditions I've ever seen at a football match, but it certainly sticks in the memory.

40th season about to start - and never been any more excited - for tis always a great journey that starts with the first game of the season....scarves out the window....and with City it's usually better to travel hopefully than to arrive in May....

....best memories? Lots already mentioned but special to me...

Chester promotion, after the bleak years that preceded it - City are back and all that...promotion party in the supporters club when the players arrived back

Hirst and Ritchie at Eastville after a sleepless overnight journey from Ireland

Stevie Neville to beat Hereford in the Freight Rover at home and set up our first Wembley appearance

Tins at Anfield - long journey with the London branch back to the Embankment

McCombe last minute at Doncaster... "he rose salmon-like"

Nobes against Palace - missed the game - hit the ceiling in our front room

Trunds against Palace at home - how sweet was that?

And the best bit is not knowing what this season will bring...

:Believe:

Beating the sags at AG 4-1, cant remember when it was (long time ago) but 1 of our guys really took the pea with one of the goals by crawling on his hands and knees heading the ball over the line at the park end, the blue few were not happy

Would that be the great louie Donawa?

Legend forever just for that moment of pure class!

Chris Garland, in about 1978 I reckon.

Surely we put more than 4 past the gas that day, at least 6 wasn't it? :dunno:

I go back to the Parr-Connor-Low days, as well.

Lots of moments listed here that bring back memories.

I would add (from a very personal perspective): almost anything done by Jantzen Derrick, who could be infuriating but was my boyhood hero and still remains one of the most naturally gifted (if under-achieving) players I have seen at Ashton Gate.

And I don't think anyone's mentioned the Mickey Mouse* cup, semi-final, second leg against Hereford. We were unluckily 2-0 down from the away leg, which I'd attended, and won 3-0 in extra time to get to our first-ever Wembley appearance. That was quite a night. We had a terrific little player called Steve Neville at the time. Must be a fair few of you who remember this.

*What was it called in those days? Freight Rover trophy, or something like that?

You,re right. it was 6-1. Pretty sure it was an Anglo Scottish Cup game, we were drawn in the same group. We went 1 down before we destroyed them. The last goal was indeed Garland, who rounded the keeper, got on his knees and headed it across the line! Remember getting a smack in the mouth from a Rovers fan on College Green on the way back to the centre. The OB had just let them out of the escort as we got there, great timing!

Ah yes, remember that one, the famous orange ball, was up the park end that day, took about 5hrs to get back to horfield, i did think it was a afternoon game though but probably wrong.

Pretty sure it was Chris Garland, a true Bristol City boy who took great delight rubbing the gas's noses in it by getting down on his knees and nodding the ball over the line right in front of them.

I don't remember Donawa's goal being like that but I was already facing skywards in an anticipatory leap by the time it crossed the line. As others have said, a really memorable match and victory.

I always thought it was more than 4 goals to City in the Garland 70's game, bit disappointed now if I've had it wrong all these years.

It was a Saturday afternoon, no refunds offered so we had to pay again to see the midweek evening re-match later in the season too.
