Supporting Bristol City

Pretty sure it was Chris Garland, a true Bristol City boy who took great delight rubbing the gas's noses in it by getting down on his knees and nodding the ball over the line right in front of them.

I don't remember Donawa's goal being like that but I was already facing skywards in an anticipatory leap by the time it crossed the line. As others have said, a really memorable match and victory.

I always thought it was more than 4 goals to City in the Garland 70's game, bit disappointed now if I've had it wrong all these years.

Your right mate, had to drag that one out of the clutter in the noggin :tumbleweed:

Notts County away in the 3rd round of the cup after we beat the gas in the second round at Eastville.

It was played on a sunday afternoon and we ended up drawing 2 2, I remember Tom Richie scoring the equaliser from the spot and us going 1 up very early. Those were the days when county were in division 1 and we were in 4.

It was a cracking day out!

The other one would be...

Bradford away in the littlewood, they had previously beaten Tottenham and Everton in cups that year and we were turning up to make the numbers up and wave Bradford into the semi's. I think walshy scored after 90 seconds and it did not seem we left out half after that! The support that night was awesome I remember going by coach and the convoy of 25 ish coaches was bused in under escort 15 mins before kick off

Ah yes, remember that one, the famous orange ball, was up the park end that day, took about 5hrs to get back to horfield, i did think it was a afternoon game though but probably wrong.

You may be right on it being an afternoon game, but the fog was soo bloody thick it may just have looked like night!!!

What about the Newport game in 82. Think it was supposed to be our last ever game before we went bust. Crowd was about 4000 and we had 3000 of them.Remember a lot of trouble in the car park before.

I drove my mums old mini over and it over heated on the way back, so had to be towed home. Remember i was in a rush to get down Hoffenbraus for a stag night, more fighting with the Welsh insued! Happy days!

First goal I ever saw at AG - John Atyeo header at east end on his testimonial (1965?).

Cashley own goal at swindon - ball must have had soap on it as it was the easiest catch to make, better mistake than Basso last year.

Cashley goal agianst Hull - some of the worst weather at AG evfer seen.

Cheeseley header from outside the penalty area at the east end. I was right behind and the ball swerved in the air and nestled in the top right hand corner of the goal - Beckham couldn't have bent it better.

Joe Royle hattrick on his debut.

Gerry Sharpe breaking his leg in front of dolman - saddest moment.

plus too many others to remember.

Let's hope for some more 'special' memories again this season.

1) Keith Fear scoring against Leeds @ AG in 74 FA Cup . 38 000 attendence . remember watching from schoolboys enclosure in front of the Dolman which was opened specifically for this match . Also was allowed to stay up to watch the match on that nights Match of the Day . The replay at Leeds was quite good apparently, as well .

2) The next round V Liverpool ,standing on a box in the open end. Lost 1-0 . Always hated Liverpool and Toshack since, although still love Keegan .

3) West Brom away 76 - first away game and what a match, what an atmosphere .

4) Portsmouth promotion , surrounding the pitch then getting seperated from family during pitch invasion (aged 10)and not giving a toss !

5) Liverpool again . beat 'em a week before they won the FA Cup and European Cup , to set up Cov away (listened too on Radio Brizzle and got a bollocking from my old man for going F Ken mental when City equalised.

6) Beating the Gas 3-1 at the Gate and chanting song about Micky Barrett at the Gas fans which really embarrassed and ashemed about 30 years on .

7) Hereford home Freight Rover Semi . One of the best atmospheres at the Gate in about 6 years . And what a game . Neville and Riley ?

8)Forest @ home Littlewoods semi . Got soaked in the enclosure , another brilliant atmosphere . Forest all over us but Walshy hit post in last minute at eastend and almost won it for us . Always hated Forest since, but always loved Cloughie !

9) Rotherham home - missed the bloody pitch invasion because my mate was in agony with Gall Stones . Had too get him too hospital .

10) Palace home and away Play Offs . Was on holiday in Turkey ! Watched both games on Hotel taking advantage of the All Inclusive . Everybody in the Hotel knew me after those matches !

This is whats great about being a City fan, so many great memories. Every season seems to throw up a big game, wether it be promotion, relegation, cup game or just a cracking away day.

All the obvious ones have been mentioned. Leeds, Liverpool and the First Division days of the 70s, Forest in the Littlewoods Cup, Loise Donowa, Liverpool away, etc. all great days, but personal favourites for me are the run of the mill games that turned into great days out.

Swindon away on a sunday afternoon, Junior Bent scoring from a superb Bob Taylor pass. They put us in the Town End that day.

Bury away first game of the seson, Taylor scoring and jumping on the fence to celebrate with us.

Millwall away on a wednesday night, think Andy May and Mark Aizlewood scored in a 2-1 win. We had 3 coaches go from the Isambard Brunel, had to get off for some reason about 2 miles from the ground and had to walk, only to be met by a mob of Millwall outside the ground about 15 minutes after kick off! Bedlam!

Going to places like Wigan, Shrewsbury and Orient in the 1990 promotion season.

Weekends in Blackpool for any game up that way!

Great days, great memories. Hopefully plenty more to come.

If Deb lets you. Finished that kitchen yet? :bounce:

Liverpool and Leeds (especially away) FA Cup 1974, WBA away 1976 (alamo on and off), 15,000 City fans at Coventry 1977, 8,000 City fans at Liverpool away FA cup Tinnion, Rotherham couple of years ago, Walsall playoffs circa 1988, especially the 3rd game where we got beat 4-0 but Carl Shutt let their keeper have it and post-match events which goes a long way to explaining the attitude of the WM Constab to City fans ever since, etc etc.

Any trip by train.

3-0 defeat at freezing Hull away New Years Day 1985 was a real laugh.

Dodgy places like Wolves, Tottenham and Millwall in the days when only a couple of hundred travelled for run-of-the-mill games.

Chester away party in the 4th 1984.

Mansfield away on a November Tuesday for a 2-0 defeat.

Swansea away 7-1.

Doncaster at Belle Vue to witness a 2-0 defeat and Bas Savage doing a Bambi on ice impersonation.

Orient at home around 1971 5-3 and Galley scored a cracker.

My first ever game as a 5 year old - home to M'boro 1967 0-0 draw.

Marched around 1988 by the OB from that pub by the Hippodrome (what was it called then?) to Eastville and I think Martyn Hirst scored a FA Cup winner.

All of them in fact, happy days indeed.

Kitchen all finished now mate. Anyway i do what i want as long as she says its alright!!!

Ditto!

Surprised you never mentioned Southampton away- does your ankle still hurt?

Came under the "any trip by train" category, but yeah that one prob one of the best. Did City play that day or did we just go to Southampton for a day out?! Ankle will never be the same again, my bouncing days may even be over.

Think that pub on the centre was called Cannons at the time, not that i can remember that far back!

Inspired guess then, yeah that was it, Cannons. OB marched us all the way to Eastville from there and the reason I remember is PC4789 thought it was a right laugh to stand on the heels of my brand new brogues all the way over, friggin ruined they were.

Almost forgot, what about the infamous Reading and Swindon games in the 80s that got stopped due to some over zealous Queensbury Rules on the terraces and pitch! Good fun at the time, but, now at 46 years old, if i swung a punch now i would miss the wife and end up fighting to get out of me duvet til tuesday!

Well I go back to 1958, So i've had think long and hard about this:-

1)First game youth match 1958 City v Arsenal (a certain Alan Skirton later to play for City, playing for Arsenal)

2)First away game 1960 april away to Torquay 0-0 with my grandad

3)First promotion may 1965 2-0 home to Oldham

4)May 1966 John Atyeo's last game 4-1 home to Ipswich, Big John scored a hatrick to pass 350 goals for the club and leaving the pitch in tears

5)1976 West Brom away, What a night, woke in the morning still fully dressed even still had my scarf and shoes (platforms) on (I believe this was the first time my missus realised how much BCFC meant to me

6)1976 1-0 home to Portsmouth and the promise land of the 1st division (the real satisfaction was seeing this team evolve over 4 or 5 seasons)

7)Arsenal August 1976, great performance

8)May 1977 Coventry away, remember lost my voice and ended up in a Coventry curry house with loads of Cov fans

9)To be honest most of the 4 seasons in the 1st division was a privilege to witness

10)1982 the generosity of the Ashton 8 (could'nt imagine the greedy chavs of today doing the same)

11)Chester 1984, Had to work but blubbed like a baby when the final whistle went

12)Wembley 1986 magic

13)Wembley 1987 crap game great laugh

At this juncture will leave out 1990, I can't even think about the gutless performance at Trumpton

14)1996/97 the terrific run of 23 games unbeaten that really laid the foundation for our promotion

Again at this juncture that season in the old 2nd division and some of the signings and managers, probably best forgotten

15)2000 wembley crap game, memorable because I took my only grandson to his first ever City game

16)May 2007 very emotional

1968 FA cup replay against Rovers (took the Tote End AGAIN!) 2-1 win, night game over 30,000 at both games.

I have many more but these are the ones that come too mind.

You are almost as old as me!

I would add Lita scoring at Port Vale, they had just equalised in injury time and were just starting the "Who are ya" chants when he scored and the whistle blew.

I was there, and it was simply the best end to an Away game that I've ever seen! :chant6ez:

Christian Roberts winner in the 5-4 at Mansfield!

Hmm, I missed out on that one, but the roof of my house almost blew off when it suddenly changed from 4-3 down to 5-4 up! And both Lita's and Robert's goals both appeared at exactly the same time on the TV! I couldn't believe it!!! :dancing6:
